Biographical history
Members of the Wynn family of Gwydir, Williams Wynn of Wynnstay, Thelwall of Plas y Ward, Kyffin of Glascoed, and Vaughan of Llwydiarth held numerous positions of responsibility within county administration, politics and the militia. For example, Sir Richard Wynn was recorder of Denbigh, 1631/2; the post Sir John Wynn was sheriff and deputy lieutenant of Denbighshire, Merioneth and Caernarfonshire several times between 1673 and 1715; Sir William Williams was custos rotulorum of Denbighshire and Caernarfonshire, 1689, and sheriff of Denbighshire, 1695/6, Shropshire, 1703/4, Montgomeryshire, 1704/5, Merioneth, 1705/6, and Caernarfonshire, 1706/7; Simon Thelwall was deputy justiciar of North Wales, 1563, and sheriff of Denbighshire, 1571; Edward Vaughan was sheriff of Denbighshire, 1660 and deputy lieutenant of Merioneth, 1674, 1685, and he was justice of the peace, member of parliament, sheriff and deputy lieutenant in Montgomeryshire between 1645 and 1705.
