Rotherfield Farm (Sussex) attornment

Attornment of John Holford of Newick, Sussex, yeoman, to Charles Gould of Ealing, Middlesex, esq., for a copyhold messuage and lands called Rotherfield Farm in Newick, in the manor of Balneth. In 1753 John, lord De Lawarr (now Earl of De Lawarr) granted George Holford then of Chailey, Sussex, yeoman (John Holford's father, since dec.) a 12 year lease of the premises. Subsequently, De Lawarr mortgaged the property (among others) to King Gould of the parish of Westminster St James, Middlesex, esq. (since dec.). De Lawarr having defaulted, Charles Gould and Paston Gould of Ealing, esqs, King Gould's sons, took possession of the mortgaged property, and Paston Gould the younger son and his father's heir according to the custom of the manor, took possession of the mortgaged copyhold premises in the manor, which Charles Gould recovered by ejectment.
