Archival history

Owned by Lewellin Lewellin (signature on p. iii); in the possession of David Howell (Llawdden, 1831-1903), Lewellin's successor as Dean of St Davids, in the summer of 1899, when it was seen and transcribed by T. C. Evans (Cadrawd) (see 'Lloffion ar ol yr Hybarch David Jones, Llangan', Y Drysorfa, 70 (1900), 129-131 (p. 129)); Howell had several more of David Jones' diaries in his possession, including that for 1799; the diary was subsequently presumed lost (see R. Brian Higham, The Rev. David Jones Llan-gan, 1736-1810, and his contribution to Welsh Calvinistic Methodism (Lewiston, N.Y., 2009), p. 59).

Content and structure area

Scope and content

The Christian Lady's Pocket Book for 1798 belonging to the Rev. David Jones of Llan-gan, Glamorgan, and Manorowen, Pembrokeshire, the prominent Methodist preacher, containing brief diary entries noting day-to-day activities, preaching engagements and tours (pp. 14-118, versos only) with additional material occasionally added on facing pages.
Two short prayers in Welsh are on pp. 111, 113. Additional memoranda, in pencil and ink, 1817-1831, appear to be in the hand of his grandson, the Rev. Lewellin Lewellin (pp. i, iii, vi, 146 and inside the covers). The volume also incorporates printed poetry, prose, tables and other information (pp. 1-12, 121-144). A few extracts from the diary, translated into Welsh, were published in 'Lloffion ar ol yr Hybarch David Jones, Llangan', Y Drysorfa, 70 (1900), 129-131 (pp. 129-130).
