Biographical history
Ellis Pierce ('Elis o'r Nant'; 1841-1912), author and bookseller, was born near Tŷ Mawr, Wybrnant, in the parish of Dolwyddelan. He received little schooling but a lengthy illness in 1854 allowed him leisure to read and to educate himself. He was editor of the periodical Y Faner for fifty years and also wrote for that paper - a practice which forced him to flee to the Utica in the United States for some four years due to the outspoken nature of some of his writings. Ellis Pierce is best remembered for his historical romances and books relating to the many 'characters' of rural Wales.
