Scope and content

Paper; folios i-iii; 1-34; 289 x 216; bound in gilt tooled calf and lettered Extent Of Temporals Of The Dioc. Of Bangor. 26 Hen. VI. All the folios are mutilated and have been strengthened by strips of paper pasted along the edges. The text is often obscured by the mending. XVth cent. It is numbered 243,676. The first section of the manuscript, ff. 1-22, corresponds to pp. 93-115 of The Record of Caernarvon, 1838, which was taken from Harleian MS 696. The obvious corruptions of the printed text find no place in this copy, and there are minor differences in arrangement and in some totals. This manuscript is imperfect at the beginning where it lacks the extents of the town of Bangor and of ht Aberpwll in Bangor Maenol, as shown by The Record of Caernarvon, pp. 92-3, and the Compotus of David Daron, which is noted below. F. i. A list of contents written in a XIXth century hand. F. iii. A vellum label on which the following title has been written - 'An Extent of The Temporalities of ye diocese of Bang'r taken in the 26th of Henrici 6ti.'. Ff. 1-22. Extent of the temporalities of the bishopric of Bangor, [1335]. The headings give dates within the 6th year of Prince Edward, who is identified with the Black Prince in the introduction to The Record of Caernarvon. It begins with the totals of the extent of Aber y pwll. The extent of ht Dynhywet is lost, as well as the greater part of that of Kylkoet, and part of Kaerwedoc, on account of the imperfect state of the first folio, and the extent of Pennywern is obscured by the mending paper. Ff. 23-30. Compotus of Master David Daron, dean of the Cathedral Church of Bangor, and the chapter there, custodians of the temporalities of the diocese of Bangor, from the death of bishop Swafham until they were delivered to Richard Yonge, clerk, by writ dated 19 May, 22 Richard II, [1399]. See Calendar of Patent Rolls, Richard II, Vol. VI., 1396-1399, p. 561, for the grant, to Richard Yonge, of the temporalities of the bishopric of Bangor so long as they should be in the King's hand. F. 31. Inquisition taken 20 May, 1439, touching certain annual rents payable by the tenants of St Daniel to the high altar and lights of St Daniel, [Bangor]. Ff. 31b-33. Copy of an inquisition taken, by virtue of a writ de diem clausit extremum, on the Friday after the feast of St Katerine, 1436, before William Halley, late escheator of co. Caern., after the death of John Clyderoo, late bishop of Bangor. F. 34a. Copy of a writ, dated 18 Dec. 1447, to the dean and chapter of Bangor to render their account of the temporalities of the bishopric before the barons of the exchequer at Westminster. F. 34b. Copy of a letter of attorney, dated 4 April 1448, from the said dean and chapter to Roger Wotton to represent them at the exchequer.
