Woodlands

The file comprises a two-part index and additional notes. The first part concerns the history of woodlands from prehistoric times to the present day, particularly noting man's influence and the need for conservation, characteristic plants, birds, insects and mammals, with subsections on each species, and notes on individual, named woods. The second part provides details of different trees, noting their growth habits, ecology, plants, birds and animals associated with each type. Some entries are expanded by fuller topographical and botanical descriptions, the etymology of Welsh species names, folklore, bibliographic information and literary references, press cuttings, pamphlets, printed articles, sketches and maps, and correspondence, including letters from Peter [Benoit], 1973-1976, and Arthur [Chater], 1969-1976, on woodland plants, Peter Crow, 1975, on moths, H. R. H. ('Taff') Vaughan, 1975-1977, mainly on the history of forest land use, and Irene Vaughan, 1949, on squirrels. A note by the author, dated August 1975, indicates his purpose and method of using the index cards.
