History

John Griffith (1863-1933), musician, teacher and scientist, was born in Rhiw, Lleyn, in 1863. He was educated at Botwnnog Grammar School and Normal College, Bangor. He was appointed teacher at Glanwydden in 1884 and in 1894 moved to Machynlleth. He returned to study at Bangor University and in 1900 took up a science teaching post in Blaenau Ffestiniog. He was appointed headmaster of Dolgellau Grammar School in 1905 and remained in the post until 1925. He edited the English section of Y Cerddor between 1930 and 1933 and was also chairman of the Harlech Festival for a period. He died at Bangor, November 1933.
