Letters to Welsh correspondents

The file comprises manuscript drafts of letters to persons identified by Harman Grisewood as 'Welsh correspondents & acquaintances', including Alun Jones, [Leonard] Twiston-Davies, [Rhydwen] Wiliams, T. H. Parry-Williams and Jonah Jones. Amongst the subjects discussed or referred to are The Anathemata ('I'm working on a book that I suppose may be finished some time but heaven knows when---', 1944); early British and Welsh history; Christopher Dawson [1970]; a commentary by Alun Jones on 'these pieces of mine' (the sleeve notes for the record in the 'Poets of Wales' series of David Jones reading selections of his work?); and the situation of the arts in modern civilization (1972); the inscription made by him and presented to Sir Thomas Parry-Williams by the Hon. Society of Cymmrodorion in 1967; a short questionnaire concerning Wales and the First World War (see The London Welshman, December 1964, pp. 3-4); and the 'Letter from David Jones' published in Poetry Wales, David Jones Special Number, vol. 8, no. 3 (Winter 1972), pp. 5-9. There are a number of drafts of a letter to Gwynfor Evans congratulating him on his electoral victory at Carmarthen in 1966.

Letters received by Harri Webb, May 1956-Oct. 1963, together with two copies of letters sent by him. Included are letters from several prominent members of Plaid Cymru, particularly Gwynfor Evans (6), 1 Oct. 1962-2 April [1963]; Emrys Roberts (4), 10 Oct. [1962]-[1963]; and Elwyn Roberts (11), 13 Sept. 1962-21 March 1963. Also included are letters from Wendy Wood, Leader of 'The Scottish Patriots', 16 Aug. 1962; Alun Pugh, 3 Sept. 1962; and Ceinwen H. Thomas, 1 Nov. 1962; as well as copies of letters from six applicants for the Dr Noelle Davies Scholarship, May 1963.

Some eighty letters, 1957-85, to Keidrych Rhys from various correspondents (surnames E-F), mainly in his capacity as editor of Wales and Welsh correspondent of The People, together with poems, short stories and essays submitted to him for publication. The correspondents and contributors include H. W. J. Edwards (18, with thirteen articles) 1957-61, Winifred Ellerman, 'Bryher' (1) 1966, George Ewart Evans (3, with one poem) 1957-9, Gwynfor Evans (8) 1963-7, Paul Ferris (4) 1976-85, Constantine Fitzgibbon (8) 1963-4, and Michael Foot (1) 1983.

Llythyr, 24 Chwefror 1963, oddi wrth Emyr Llew[elyn] Jones, Llandysul, at ddisgyblion chweched dosbarth Ysgol Ardudwy, Harlech, yn eu mysg William H. Owen, i ddiolch am eu llythyr yn cefnogi ei safiad, ar ôl iddo danio ffrwydryn ar safle adeiladu argae Tryweryn ar y 10 Chwefror. Cafodd ei arestio yn fuan wedi'r digwyddiad, a'i ryddhau ar fechnïaeth ar y 21 Chwefror. = A letter, 24 February 1963, from Emyr Llew[elyn] Jones, Llandysul, to sixth-form students at Ysgol Ardudwy, Harlech, including William H. Owen, thanking them for their letter supporting his action in detonating an explosive device at the construction site of the Tryweryn dam on 10 February. He had been arrested soon after the incident but was released on bail on the 21 February.
Mae'r llythyr hefyd yn trafod safbwynt Plaid Cymru a Gwynfor Evans tuag ato, ac yn cymeradwyo'n llwyr eu penderfyniad i ymatal rhag ei gefnogi yn gyhoeddus. = The letter also discusses the stance of Plaid Cymru and Gwynfor Evans towards him and fully endorses their decision to refrain from supporting his actions publicly.

The correspondents comprise the adjudicator, politician and dramatist Saunders Lewis, the poet, novelist and Baptist minister Rhydwen Williams, the nationalist and politician Gwynfor Evans and the author, reviewer and psychiatrist Harri Pritchard-Jones. Supplementary material comprises printed notes referencing the correspondence received by W. M. Rees during the fight for victory, together with a reproduced selection of that correspondence (see also Sefyll yn y Bwlch: Brwydr Llangyndeyrn 1960-1965, pp. 140-153).

Scripts for the radio programme 'in Britain Now'

File comprises scripts fr Patrick Hanna's contributions to a BBC Radio 4 programme entitled 'In Britain Now', where journalists from the 'regions' of the UK spoke on various topics . The topics covered by Patrick Hannan from Wales included devolution, Gwynfor Evans, the coal industry, miners' strikes, the clean up after coal, Plaid Cymru, Wales as a nation, the European Economic Community (EEC) and industrial illnesses notably pneumoconiosis. The file also contains typed transcripts of the programme which include contributions from correspondents in other parts of the UK.
