Estate rentals

Estate rentals, 1772-1808. In 1772/3 there was a major re-arrangement of the rent collecting system. The manor of Cyfeiliog does not form part of this re-arrangement, except in that from 1772 the Tirymynych estate appears consistently in the same collection as the Rhiwsaeson and Mathafarn estates. The manor of Cyfeiliog does not re-appear until 1786. The other existing collections are re-arranged into five numbered collections, and a number of other collections. The post-1809 rentals have been treated differently.

The subjects are focussed mainly on family life, estate matters, private financial arrangements, local and national current affairs, the correspondents’ professional legal careers and their public posts in county administration.

Papers relating to careers, private interests and pedigrees,

This rather disparate group consists of three series of papers, comprising papers accumulated by the Wynn and Williams Wynn family in the course of their legal and political careers, 1631-[1749]; papers relating to their private interests, [17th cent., 1st half]-1799; and pedigrees, [pre-1580]-[post-1863].

Miscellaneous legal cases and pardons,

Two series of documents deriving from the processes of the law in England and Wales. The first comprises papers accumulated during the proceedings of miscellaneous lawsuits, mainly equity cases in the courts of the Council in the Marches of Wales, Chancery, the Great Sessions and the Exchequer, 1509-1819, and involving some of the prominent families associated with Wynnstay, such as Purcell of Nantcriba, Wynn of Gwydir, and Kyffin of Glascoed, as well as Pugh of Mathafarn. The second series consists entirely of pardons for various misdemeanours, granted by the Crown or by peers who had the power of legal jurisdiction in particular lordships, 1458-1690.

Typically the files include draft or copy agreements for sale and purchase, conveyances, auction notices, sale particulars, conditions of sale, requisitons on title, solicitors’ correspondence and maps or plans. There is a further series of abstracts, schedules, requisitions on title, etc. found with the conveyances and probably accumulated for the purpose of the estate sales and purchases [1771x1789]-1881.

Estate rentals pre-1772

Estate rentals pre-1772. See also Wynnstay MS 86 (described elsewhere in this hierarchical structure with the other Wynnstay MSS) for early accounts and rentals (1300/1 onwards). Since this rental was deposited at NLW some years before the arrival of the main series of rentals and has been known as Wynnstay MS 86 for many years, it was deemed best not to alter this reference number, and not to include the volume in the general series of Wynnstay Rentals.
