Charters of the Abbey of Ystrad Marchell,

Thirty seven charters of the Abbey of Ystrad Marchell near Welshpool, dating from 1183 to 1529, together with three Elizabethan inspeximus of the earlier charters, 1577-1588/9. The original foundation charter of c. 1170 is missing, but copies have survived in TNA and in the Wynnstay Estate Records at NLW. Twelve of the charters comprise grants and sales by Gwenwynwyn ap Owain of lands in the commote of Cyfeiliog, the hundred of Arwystli and the manor of Caereinion Uwch Coed, 1185-1215. Other documents in the Wynnstay archive include six grants by members of the former ruling elite of Arwystli [c. 1195]-1215; several grants of lands or pasturage rights in Penllyn and Edeirnion, Mochnant, Montgomery, Caledffrwd and Bachwilym; confirmations by King John, 1200, and Edward de Charleton, 1420, of previous grants; conveyances by Llywelyn Fawr, [1209] and his son, Gruffudd, 1226; records of disputes between the abbeys of Ystrad Marchell and Cwm Hir over lands in Arwystli, [c. 1216], 1227; a mandate of Anian, bishop of St Asaph, [1268x1292]; confirmation of a grant by John de Charleton of the abbot’s right to hold a court of his tenants, 1367; leases of lands in Arwystli by two of the abbots, 1490-1529; and a single charter of Owain ap Madog granting land in Dinmael to Valle Crucis Abbey, 1207.

Carno collection

The collection comprises property in p's Trefeglwys, Carno, Llanwnnog, Penegoes, Llanbryn-mair, and Aberbygan [?t. Aberbechan in p. Llanllwchaearn], all co. Mont. R6/2 (1714-1715) includes land tax in Tir y Mynech in p. Llanbryn-mair, and in Carno collections for 1712. R6/9 (1714-1715) includes land tax for Carno and Llanbryn-mair collections for 1713 and 1714. Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire deeds and documents

Conveyances, agreements, particulars, conditions of sale and other documents relating to the sale of parts of the Wynnstay estates in Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire, 1853-1921, and the estate timber, 1853[x1870]. The lands included the Maenan estate, 1856-1858, and part of the Cefn estate, sold for building development in Colwyn Bay and Llysfaen, 1891-1921.

Caerhun/Llanbedrycennin/Llangelynnin title deeds

Title deeds relating mainly to properties acquired by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, his brother Richard Gwynne and Edward Williams, whose widow Grace married Richard Gwynne in 1602, situated in the townships of Penfro, Castell, Glyn and Gronant, often combining more than one of these townships and overlapping the parish boundaries of Caerhun, Llanbedrycennin and Llangelynnin. Beddgelert and Llanberis title deeds,

Title deeds for properties in the townships of Nanhwynan, 1524-1627, and Nanmor, 1529-1606, within the parish of Beddgelert, on the border of Caernarfonshire and Merioneth; and for properties in Dolbadarn in the adjacent parish of Llanberis, Caernarfonshire.

Bangor and Maenol Bangor title deeds ,

Loose deeds and original tied bundles relating mainly to properties purchased by Richard Gwynne from William and Piers Gruffith of Penrhyn, together with others acquired by Sir John Wynn and Moris Wynn of Gwydir. The files describe miscellaneous properties in Bangor and Maenol Bangor, 1441-1615, 1785; miscellaneous properties in Crewedog and Tyllfaen, 1446-1617; Tythyn y Bryn Due in Crewedog and Tyllfaen, 1562-1579; Crewedog estate and lands in Crewedog, Tyllfaen, Pentir, etc., 1584-1614; miscellaneous properties in Tregwyr-rhyddion, 1595-1611; Tyddyn Dan Garreg y Walch, Aber-y-pwll, 1598-1612; properties in Bangor purchased by Richard Gwynne from William Gruffith, 1598-1617; Bryn Heylloke Ucha, Bryn Heylloke Issa etc. in Tregwyr-rhyddion and Llwydiarth, 1605-1609; and Tythyn Pen yr Allt and a parcel in Maes-y-felin, Aber-y-pwll, 1636.

Bala Lake deeds,

Two deeds, 1570-1572, recording the conveyance of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid or Pimbremear), ultimately to the existing tenant, Howell Vaughan of Llanuwchllyn. The lake and its surrounds lay in the territory of Penllyn once owned by Ystrad Marchell Abbey and appropriated by the Crown after the dissolution. The deeds recite a grant by Queen Elizabeth in 1569/70 and the names of successive owners, London gentlemen, the last of whom conveyed the property to Vaughan; it then formed part of the Glan-llyn estate. Both deeds were contained in an envelope [c. 1945]

Arwystli farm rents

Property in p's Llanidloes, Trefeglwys, Carno, Llanwnnog, Mochdre and Montgomery, co. Mont. Collector: William Jones, 1805-1808.

Arwystli collection

Containing farm rentals, cottage rentals, tithes, etc., concerning property in p's Llanidloes, Trefeglwys, Carno, Llanwnnog, Mochdre, Montgomery and Llangurig, co. Mont. RA24 contains a copy of the Llangurig tithe apportionment, 1843. With regard to the dates, R64/1 and R64/3, for example, would contain the Arwystli rental for the year 1808 (not necessarily collected in 1808). Collectors: William Jones, 1808-1816, William Johnes, 1817-1836, David Jones, 1837-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, Nathan Burlinson, 1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, and Owen Hughes, 1871. From 1861 onwards, only tithe rent charges (as in R116/2g) for p's Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, together with p. Llanbryn-mair, co. Mont., are contained in this series of rentals (see also the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals described elsewhere in this catalogue). Details of other rents in p's Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig (as in R116/2f) will be found in R117/2c, then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in Carno and Llanwnnog will be found in R117/2c (being a rental of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Arwystli chief rents

Property on the Berthlwyd estate (p's Llanidloes and Llandinam), and in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam, Carno, Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, all in co. Mont. Also cottage rents in p's Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llandinam and Penystrywaid up to 1828 (see also the Arwystli collection). Arbitration awards,

Arbitration awards, bonds to abide by arbitrators’ and other related papers. Two files relate to disputes of miscellaneous individuals in Shropshire, 1449-1565, and in North Wales, 1517-1604. The rest derive from disputes of specific families and individuals, namely the Thelwall family of Plas y Ward, [1476]-1598; Owen ap Ieuan ap David in Merioneth, 1517-1543; David ap John ap Tuder in Anglesey, 1532-1535; William ap Gruffith ap Gwillim and family of Glyn Gronant and Castell, 1533-1569; and the Wynn family [of Gwydir], 1612-1710.

Anglesey title deeds,

Sparse series of deeds for properties on Anglesey, which appear to have belonged to the estates of Chwaen and Glasinfryn.
