Barddoniaeth David Charles,

A notebook in the autograph of J. H. Davies described as containing 'Barddoniaeth amryw ond yn benaf David Charles ieuaf Caerfyrddin yr hwn a anwyd 1802 [sic] ac a fu farw 1880' transcribed from printed sources, e.g. Addysgydd 1823. Loose at the beginning is a letter, 1896, from David. R. Charles, Hoylake to J. H. Davies enclosing a transcript of a Welsh translation by D[avid] C[harles], the writer's father, 1853, of the hymn 'Abide with me' ('Trig gyda mi, f'Arglwydd mae n hwyrhau').

A short catechism (16pp.) in the autograph of Owen Williams ('Owain Gwyrfai'; 1790-1874), Waunfawr, Caernarvonshire entitled 'Holwyddoreg. Dyledswydd Rhieni tuag at ei plant, sef Tadau a mamau'.

Gwaith Dafydd Siôn Siâms

A volume of Welsh poetry, c. 1777-1803, in free and strict metres by, and probably in the autograph of, Dafydd Jones, who is styled here variously as Dafydd Jones, Book Binder, 'Dafydd Ioan Deudraeth' and 'Dafydd Deudraeth' [i.e. 'Dafydd Siôn Siâms; 1743-1831]. The contents include 'carolau plygain', 'Can o alarus Brofiad y Prydydd ar farwolaeth ei wraig a gladdwyd ..... 1786', 'Awdl ir Gwirionedd yr hyn ydoedd brif Destyn Eisteddfod y Beirdd ynhrêf Llanrwst Mihefin 14 1791', and an elegy on the death of Rob[er]t Roberts [Clynnog].

A copy of The Quackade. A mock heroic poem, in five canto's. By Whirligig Bolus, Esq; (London: Printed by Thomas Syringe, 1752). The inscription 'from the Author' [?Thomas Harris - see below] occurs on one of the end-papers. Riddles, charades, etc. have been written on the end-papers.

A notebook bearing the number '10' containing transcripts of 'cywyddau' by Wiliam Cynwal (1), Hywel Rheinallt (4), Huw Roberts Llên (1) and Huw ap Dafydd (1) partly in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') and partly in the form of press cuttings. Most of the pages are blank.

A volume put together by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing miscellaneous press cuttings, extracts from Peniarth MS [124] and 'Eglurhad ar eiriau tywyll yn ngwaith rhai Beirdd' (largely crossed out), etc.

Llenorion Sir Gaernarfon. Cyf. II,

A scrap-book containing material largely of Caernarvonshire interest (biographical notes, press cuttings, extracts from almanacs, copies of memorial inscriptions, etc.) compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). There is a rough list of contents at the beginning but this is not exhaustive and the pages are not numbered. Inset are two letters, one incomplete, 1920-1, from Ifan ab Owen Edwards, Llanuwchllyn to 'Myrddin Fardd'.

Miscellanea,

A notebook containing extracts transcribed by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') from S[imon] T[homas], Hanes y Byd a'r Amseroedd (Llundain, 1721), followed by press cuttings on the subject of plagiarism, etc., with references to a controversy which arose at Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Môn, Porthaethwy (Menai Bridge) in 1873. Individuals mentioned in the cuttings include [John Owen Griffith] 'Ioan Arfon' and [John James Hughes] 'Alfardd'.

Notebooks of 'Eben Fardd',

A composite volume made up of notebooks, etc. in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') containing notes on 'Evidences of Christianity' ('From Abbott', 'Paley's Evidences') and on Latin grammar, copies of memorial inscriptions (Clynnog churchyard, Llanarmon churchyard), pedigrees, 'Biosianos' (a few autobiographical notes ending 1839) etc.; 'Caniadau sef Awdlau, Cywyddau, ac Englynion ynghyd a Chaniadau ar amryw fesurau eraill o waith Ebenezer Thomas neu Cybi o Eifion y rhai a ysgrifenodd, pan oedd yn ysgol Tydweiliog ei oedran 18. Gorffen haf 4. 1821', being early poetical compositions by 'Eben Fardd', 1819-24, one or two crossed out; another notebook containing 'The Pedigree of Rowland Jones of Broom Hall Esq. Extracted from the Works of his Father, Row. Jones of Hendre, and afterwards of the Inner Temple London, Esqr. Barrister at Law', followed by notes in pencil and other pedigrees (Prysgyni, Tanybryn Llanllyfni, the Glynllifon family); a cutting of verses entitled 'Llan y Plwy' printed in Y Cymro, with an explanatory note in the autograph of 'E[ben] Vardd'; and some later poetical compositions by 'Eben Fardd'.

A copy in the autograph of R. Oliver Rees, Dolgellau of 'Marwnad i'r diweddar Barch. David Jones, Treborth' by William Thomas ('Islwyn'). This was published at Dolgellau by R. O. Rees in [1871], the printer being D. H. Jones. Alterations to the manuscript copy have been included in the printed text.

Cambrian tales,

Two tales by 'J. M. J.', 1846, viz. 'Llewelyn's Revenge, a Tale of Cambria' (end wanting) and 'The Legend of Pant-y-Saeson. A Cambrian Tale of 17th. Century'. An introductory note to the first is dated 'Banks of the Conway, June 29. 1846' and the second is dated 'Banks of the Conway, August 1. 1846'.

Welsh National Library Fund,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies, with insets largely in his hand, containing lists of subscriptions by London Welshmen towards the Welsh National Library Fund ('provided such National Library is founded at Aberystwyth').

A small volume containing extracts by 'Mr Llwyd' from John Davies, A Display of Herauldry (Salop, 1716), with annotations and additions from the same source, largely by 'J. J.'.

Mynegai i farddoniaeth Huw Morys,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an alphabetical index of first lines of poetry by Huw Morys published in W[alter] D[avies] ['Gwallter Mechain'], Eos Ceiriog (Wrexham, 1823), with a few subsequent additions from Cwrtmawr MSS 222, 224 and from Carolau a Dyriau Duwiol ([Shrewsbury] 1696).

Nodiadau pregethau, etc.,

A manuscript of the Reverend Jeffrey Davies, Penrhiw, Llangamarch, Brecknockshire containing mainly notes of sermons, scriptural addresses and meditations. The first page is dated 28 August 1833 and the last 14 June 1835, but there are a few intermediate dates within the period 1839-40. The text on pp. 270 ff. is entitled 'y pumed pwngc i araithio arno yn Ngyfarfod blynyddol yr Ysgol Sabbath yn Defynog Mawrth 13 1835'. At the end of the volume are verses entitled 'Cymanfa Cader Idris. Hanes cymanfa a gynhalwyd ar gopa Cader Idris ... i ystyriaid y modd mwyaf effeithiol i dynu i lawr yr Hen Eglwys Loeger ac i ymwrthod ar degymau'.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a chronological list compiled in 1904 of printed books in Welsh and of Welsh interest, 1567-1899 and undated, in the library of University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Rhestrau llyfrau,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing lists of works by William Williams, Pantycelyn, Rees Prichard, John Bunyan (translations into Welsh), Thomas Edwards ('o'r Nant') and Thomas Jones, Denbigh, and of Welsh periodicals and almanacs [in the Cwrtmawr library]. The volume was originally used to record, in another hand, a 'Catalogue of Pamphlets', 1789-1891 and undated [also in the Cwrtmawr library].

South Cardiganshire presbytery deeds, etc.,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an incomplete (Aberayron - Capel y Ffynnon) list of deeds of churches in the South Cardiganshire [Calvinistic Methodist] Monthly Meeting, 'now in the safe at Shiloh Chapel [Aberystwyth] Oct. 25, 1902'; a list of Welsh books arranged in numbered parcels (e.g. A1-23, etc.), and a list of books sent to Speakman, 91 Islington, Liverpool, April 1920.
