Subscribers to Enwogion Llŷn,

Strata Florida rent roll,

A notebook containing extracts transcribed by J. H. Davies (a) 'from a Translation of Rent Roll for the Manors &c of the monastery of Strata Florida' [see Cwrtmawr MS 873D] and (b) from a copy of the defendant's answer, 14 May 1743, in a lawsuit between Dorothy, Lady Lisburne, and Wilmot (Vaughan), Viscount Lisburne, containing lists of rents and tenants' names. The original of (b) is inserted loose in the notebook (pp. 1-2 wanting) and there is also a letter to J. H. Davies from Herbert M. Vaughan, Llangoedmore, Cardigan, who was the owner, it seems, of the document. Also within the notebook are observations by S. M. P[owell] headed 'Pant. Tregaron' and beginning 'Some things struck Mr Lloyd and myself in reading your notes.'.

South Cardiganshire presbytery deeds, etc.,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an incomplete (Aberayron - Capel y Ffynnon) list of deeds of churches in the South Cardiganshire [Calvinistic Methodist] Monthly Meeting, 'now in the safe at Shiloh Chapel [Aberystwyth] Oct. 25, 1902'; a list of Welsh books arranged in numbered parcels (e.g. A1-23, etc.), and a list of books sent to Speakman, 91 Islington, Liverpool, April 1920.

Sources of manorial history, etc.,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing notes of lectures, 1900-01, on sources of manorial history; together with some additions on palaeography and the 'character' of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman records, and on Old French syntax.

Sire Hippolite [etc.],

Only the cover bears the title 'Sire Hippolite', the main contents of the volume being: 'Epitre a Horace [Walpole]' and 'Le "Lutrin" refondu', i.e. 'Le Lutrin' of Boileau 'new cast' by Thomas Powell, 1807. Between these are items of verse, etc. and (in another hand) 'Discours a l'occasion du Lutrin de Boileau a notre Facon, refondu'. There is also a holograph letter in French from L'abbé de Lévizac, 'Londres ce 23 juin 1806' to Thomas Powell, Esq. 'At Tom' Coffee-house, Cornhill'.

Sermons, etc.

A composite volume containing sermons, extracts or 'hints' from sermons (taken partly from a sermon by Mr [Daniel] Rowland), a hymn and a holograph elegy [by the Reverend Edward Matthews, Ewenny] written on the dorse of an invoice to him, 1888, for the purchase of a printed book.

A note by [J] Spinther [James] facing p. 584 begins 'Dyma'r "Cyfamod" y dywed Cofianwyr Christmas Evans ei fod ar goll' (see also his Hanes y Bedyddwyr yn Nghymru, Cyf IV (Caerfyrddin, 1907), pp. 433-4).

Sermons,

A collection of twenty-seven small notebooks or booklets, twenty-six containing sermons, in Welsh with one exception, written by various eighteenth century authors, one containing a theological catechism (incomplete) in English. Several of the booklets, some of them numbered, appear to be in the hand of the Reverend Watkin Jones, who was curate of Llanberis, Caernarvonshire, c. 1752-63. An interesting feature concerning this group is that the paper on which the semons have been written includes bills, printed items and letters, among them five letters, 1751-3, from [the Reverend] Evan Owen, 'vaner near Dolgelle [sic]', [rector of Llanberis], and one, 1759, from [the Reverend] Maurice Williams, Dolwyddelan. The remaining booklets are in various hands: one, containing two sermons preached at Clynin [sic] (probably Llangelynnin) and Llanegrin, etc., 1780-5, has the words 'by H. Jones Maesgalasau' written on the first page, another notebook bears the legend 'Robt. Roberts Ejus Manus', and the only English sermon in the collection was preached at Minsterly and Shelve [Salop], 1726 and 1730.

Sermons,

Notebooks and loose papers containing notes of sermons by, and in the hand of, the Reverend Hugh Pugh of Llandrillo and Mostyn. Cwrtmawr MSS 985 and 986 appear to have been written during the period 1829-31, when the writer was at Llandrillo, while Cwrtmawr MS 987 was written some time later. There are notes with many of the sermons which indicate that they were later preached a number of times during the period 1837-1868.

Sermons,

A composite volume comprising two notebooks, each containing a sermon [by Richard Richards, Caerwys], the one in English, preached at Caerwys in 1823 and 1836, and the other in Welsh, with annotations in another hand.

Sermons,

An imperfect volume of sermons, written in two hands. On the inside upper cover is the inscription 'E Libris How : Powell II : B'. This owner may be identified with Howell Powell (died 1736), rector of Llangattock-nigh-Usk, and the second half of the volume may be in his hand. The inside upper cover contains an incomplete list of contents.

Sermons,

A volume of sermons or addresses in Welsh on the Lord's Prayer, the Sacraments and the Lord's Supper, 1721-2. Written inside the front cover is a list of religious books, and a note (partly crossed out) at the back reads 'Instituted into Llanstffraid, 1693. Septemb' the 25'. According to NLW MS 1626, one William Herbert was instituted to Llansaintffraid, Cardiganshire, 26 September 1693. Inserted in the volume is a note by J. H. Davies stating that NLW MS 1259 contains sermons in the same hand.

Sermons,

A volume of sermon notes bearing the name 'Richard Foulkes Dimbuch (crossed out) Ebrill 12 1813', above which J. H. Davies has written in pencil 'Richard Foulkes (1784-1823)' [i.e. 'Silas Glandyfrdwy', Baptist minister]. Other items include a few medical and veterinary recipes and some music.

Sermons,

Four Welsh sermons (in three booklets) preached at various places in Denbighshire and Flintshire, diocese of St Asaph, 1771-1810, viz. Henllan, Llanufydd, Dyserth, Cwm, Rhyddlan, Meliden, Bodfari and Bettws; and a notebook containing three English sermons preached at Melverley, Salop and Llandrinio and Criggion, Montgomeryshire, 1770-81, and (? by another person) at Prees, 1783, and 'House of Industry', 1790. There is no clue to the authorship of either group but the English sermons may be connected with the Reverend John Lewis, who was rector of Hirnant and curate of Llandrinio and Criggion (d. 1782). The vicar of Betws-yn-Rhos from 1799 until his death in (?)1811 was the Reverend Edward Evans.
