Letter from Siraj ud-Daula,

Message containing a request from Nandakumara at Hugli, apparently relating to entry no. 115 in CR8/1.

Siraj ud-daula, Nawab of Bengal, -1757

Letter from Siraj ud-Daula,

I had appointed Shaikh Amar Allah to the post of faujdari at the haklah of Hoogli but I now realise that he would not be able to perform his duties without the assistance of Fakhr al-Tujjar. Therefore, I am sending him there and advise you that all relevant cases should now be referred to him at that place. I hope this will not interfere in the affairs of the [East India] Company. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 142.

Copy of news reports. -- Report of Gurdatt Harkarah stationed with the army of Nawab Shuja al-Daulah Bahadur dated 8 Muharram, reg.yr. 4 and received at Azimabad on 15 Muharram. He has also submitted the following reports, which he had received from Shahjahanabad. -- After the war between Mir Khurd and the late Sadiq during which the latter was killed a reliable person reported to Nawab Shuja al-Daulah Bahadur that the wealth belonging to the deceased Sadiq at Khairabad was taken away by an Arab named Ali Beg, a faujdar in Khairabad, who was now selling his goods. The Nawab had sent a force to capture him but he managed to escape. Later the Nawab sent a jamadar named Ismail Khan belonging to the risalah of Mir Fath Allah Khan with two thousand soldiers. The Arab was ultimately caught and was brought back to Khairabad. Ali Beg offered twenty Lac rupees to the jamadar to present to the Nawab. After long negotiations it was agreed that he would pay the above sum in instalments. Out of this sum ten thousand rupees was given to one person as a reward and five thousand to the cook. In addition twenty five thousands was given to Ghulam Husain Khan, in charge of the elephant yard; ten thousand rupees were allocated for the preparation of rath khanah of the Begum Sahibah and big tents etc; five thousand rupees as a present to Nawab Baqa Allah Khan, son of Amir Khan. The family of Raja Jagat Narayan who had died in Delhi were awarded a Khillat of five pieces of cloths and a Khillat of three cloths for Lachhmi Narayan and ten thousand rupees for the preparation of the funeral. In addition the family was given twenty thousand rupees by the King. -- Rajah Ram Narayan was instructed to send an up-dated map of Gorakhpur, which he has supplied. The Nawab was very pleased with this and he called everyone and asked them to get ready after Muharram. -- Mir Naim Khan, Faujdar of Sadhura who is a darogha of Habib Khan, was previously instructed to deposit ten thousand rupees in the treasury.

Letter from Mir Jafar,

Thank you for your letter informing that you have received news from Azimabad that that the enemies were having some bad thoughts and that Zubdat al-Tajjar/ chief trader Mr Watts would be giving me a detailed report on this matter. As a matter of fact this is the first time I have heard of this as Mr Watts had already left for Calcutta before I received your letter. If I hear or receive any bad news from there I will inform you at once and seek your help. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 224.

Mir Jafar, Nawab of Bengal.
