Letter from Raja Ram Singh to Clive.

When you came to visit us here you assured me that you would be able to attend to the bank drafts on your return to Murshidabad. Now my bankers/creditors [mahajans] are pressing me hard to return their money and they have installed guards on my doors. They are saying that it is a time of war and that they want their monies returned at all costs. As I have no one else to turn to except you I seek your help to save me from these mahajans.

Letter from Rajah Balvand? Singh Bahadur to Clive.

Thank you very much for your letter. I am a faithful servant of the East India Company and a devoted servant of my benefactor and I consider that my future is attached to your prosperity and well-being. I hope you will continue to bestow your kindness on me. I have sent you a detailed account of this region and hope that you have read this report by now.

Letter from Rajah Balvand Singh to Clive.

After taking my leave from you I came to Naraynpore and sent a message to Bije Singh, a Zamindar of Sarpanjah, to come to terms with us and vacate the fort of Sarpanjah. Although he had made full preparations to defend the fort he knew that I had the support of the English and so he vacated the fort on the 4th of Safar. We found that the whole parganah has been laid waste and that the people were in a wretched state. After establishing my administration there I came back to Ramnagar on the 9th of the above month. I have sent the overdue amounts to the company treasury on the 16th of the above month.

You and your officers are very well aware of my circumstances. Because of this I have been very worried and disturbed. I have asked my Diwan, Labha Kishor Ji, to inform you about these circumstances in detail. I am a poor zamindar who has always lived under the protection of your government. I would appreciate if you could consider the petition of my Diwan sympathetically and send a parwanah to your Faujdar Sahib so that he could instruct his officers. -- Enclosure: Details of a nazur presented of 2 Muhr Ashrafi and 12 rupees.

Letter from Rajah Kashi Nath to Clive.

I hope you have received my earlier letters in Bengali as I have not received any in reply. In my letters I had pointed out the discrepancy in the revenue levied on the District of Balya which comes under the administration of the government. The tax on this land has been assigned at fifteen or sixteen thousand rupees whereas papers for the previous years show that it should not be evaluated more than five pr [sic] six thousand rupees. I have compared these papers with those of the previous years and prepared new papers showing the correct amount of revenues. I have sent a copy of this account to you as well as to the Bara Sahib [Nawab Sahib] but did not receive any response. I would be grateful if you could help in expediting this matter.

Letter from Rajah Murlidhar to Clive.

I had sent you a letter through the Peshkar but have not received any reply; I hope you have received this letter. We are all praying here day and night for your well-being. I was hoping that you would write to me when you arrived at Murshidabad but now we hear that you and the Nawab were going to Calcutta instead. I hope you will write to me from there. -- Earlier I had sent news reports from Shahjahanabad and from the court of Shuja al-Daulah. At present I have no further news about the army of Shuja al-Daulah. The latest news about him is that he has gone to Jaunpore to settle matters between Benares and Jaunpore. Their forward column has reached Sirhind and Navab Ghazi al-Din Khan, who did not agree with the Prince, is staying in the mansion of Ali Mardan Khan.

Meanwhile, I look forward to your act of kindness. -- É -- Enclosure: I am enclosing four ashrafis and one rupee as a nuzr.

Letter from Rajah Shitab Rae to Clive.

Thank you for your letter informing me that Mr. Middleton had complained to you that Mr.[Roger?] Drake and Mr Khatnak [?] were trading in Azimabad without the permission of the Company. As I imprison anyone who conducts unauthorized trade in this province and transport them to Calcutta I should not have made an exception in this case. Before Mr [Samuel?] Middleton wrote to you he had already mentioned this matter to me and accordingly I had sent my men to Hajipore to get hold of these two persons and they have now been put in prison. In future I will not delay in implementing any order given to me by Mr. Middleton.

Letter from Rajah Shitab Rae to Clive.

It appears that the vakil of the Marathas has told you that I had told him that the official vakil of the government was about to go to see Rajah Januji to discuss the issue of Orissa province. I am not so stupid as to say such things to him. The fact is that three days before arriving here the aforesaid vakil had first met Zain al-Abidin Khan at Azimabad and discussed with him the issue of chauth for Maharaja Januji. I replied that no one had the authority to discuss this issue except by the authority of Nawab Amir al-Mumalik. The Vakil replied that people have informed him that the Nawab has appointed Mirza Zain al-Abidin to proceed to see Maharaja Januji to discuss the issue of chauth with him; I told him that I was not aware of this. Afterwards he told me that he wanted to see me regarding this issue and I told him that he should seek your permission before doing so. He seems to dig out information from allcomers. He had arrived here after hearing the news of the departure of Mirza Zain al-Abdin Khan. As Mirza had left in a hurry he did not have the time to write and inform you. He has told similar stories to Nawab Mubariz al-Mulk Bahadur and asked him to send him with the Mirza.
