Llyfr John Cain

The manuscript is in two parts and comprises pedigrees in the hand of John Cain. The first part was written in 1638-1641 and the second part in 1613-1641.
There are also a few letters to John Cain from Dafydd Lloyd (part i, pp. 113-114, and a copy of another on p. 115) and Sion Clywedog (part i, p. 83, part ii, p. 64), and a letter from Henry Nedham to J. Cayen.

Camden's Errors in History Corrected, &c.,

A manuscript in several hands, including that of Robert Vaughan, comprising Camden's Errors in History Corrected; Jacob Ussher's Antiquities of the British Church; John Leland's Laborious Journey; corrections of the errors in Britannia (1594); and other texts. An envelope contains a loose part of p. 5.

The Red Book of Caures Castle,

A transcript in the hand of Robert Vaughan of the Red Book of Caures Castle, comprising a journal of transactions relating to the estates of Humphrey, Earl of Stafford and later Duke of Buckingham between 30 August 1434 and 1454/6 [the 33rd year of Henry VI's reign].

A collection of pedigrees of English families, including those of Richard, earl of Clare; Robert Stafford; Baldwin de Rivers; Roger Montgomery; Aubery de Vere; Henry Percy; and William Cecil.

Robert Vaughan's book of pedigrees,

A collection of pedigrees compiled by and in the hand of Robert Vaughan, with marginal notes and references.
Also included are additions in various hands and fifteen loose folios belonging to another manuscript by Robert Vaughan. Some of the text has been restored by W. W. E. Wynne.

Wills, pedigrees and a list of sheriffs and under-sheriffs of Montgomeryshire.
Eleven leaves of pedigrees in earlier hands, including that of Humphrey Humphreys, Bishop of Bangor and then Hereford, and loose memoranda have been kept with the manuscript; the pedigrees in the manuscript are copies of these eleven sheets.

The manuscript is in two parts and comprises a Welsh dictionary, including words glossed in Latin or Welsh, and a vocabulary in which words are arranged by their roots, in the hand of John Jones, Gellilyfdy, written between December 1623 and April 1624.

Brut y Brenhinedd,

The manuscript is in five sections and is in the hand of John Jones, Gellilyfdy. Texts include two versions of Dares Phrygius (one in Latin and Welsh); Brut y Brenhinedd (which was left unfinished in 1634); a religious transcript from Peniarth MS 16 (1641); extracts from the Welsh Laws; and the beginning of Dosbarth Edern Dafod Aur.

A manuscript comprising three Welsh vocabularies: The first vocabulary is not in alphabetical order; the second vocabulary is arranged alphabetically, comprising words beginning with 'B, P, R, S, T, V, W, Y', with references to the Laws of Hywel Dda; and the third is a Latin-English vocabulary.
Pp. 2-8 are in the hand of J. D. Rhys (or possibly Thomas Wiliems) and pp. 9-68 are possibly in the hand of Jaspar Griffith. The remaining pages are in different hands.

Astrology, geomancy, etc.

Treatises and notes on the signs of the zodiac, the four elements, the planets, the sphere, geomancy, the astrolabe, astrology, etc.
Part of the manuscript is written in cryptic writing.

Speculum mathematicum,

A manuscript of the Speculum Mathematicum sive de numerorum figuratorum resolutione of James Dowson of Chester (printed 1614), with astrological notes; and 'Shorte astrologicall judgments of the 12 howses of the heavens, first written by Gerrardus and after by Cornelius Agrippa augmented'.

School exercise books,

Exercise books in arithmetic and Latin, together with transcripts of arithmetic books, by John Jones, Gellilyfdy, 1597-1599. Also included are letters to Thomas Jones, 1581, and letters to John Jones from his father, William Jones, 1598.
The arithmetic and Latin books are composed of used paper from an attorney's office, some of it belonging to Thomas Jones, attorney, of Shrewsbury. There are six volumes in all. One booklet was transcribed by John Jones in 1654.

Treatises concerning 'the origin of Springs, Generation of Rain, and the Production of Wind', and 'the Motion of the Sea in General'.

Charms and palmistry,

The manuscript is in two parts. The first part comprises charms, directions on how to make circles, a copy of John Leland's Epigrams, problems, memoranda, Welsh verses, and a list of owners of Welsh manuscripts, apparently compiled by John Jones, Gellilvydy about 1611. The second part is a fifteenth-century treatise on palmistry, with diagrams.
