Socialism and suffragettes,

Arranged into: (i) Correspondence and papers relating to Socialist movements, 13 Dec. 1895-8 March 1914 (Nos 1-81), comprising a little material on the I.L.P. and Fabian Society; some records of a university settlement group at Aberystwyth with designs on Cardiff; a good deal of material on the settlement movement, including scrappy cuttings from the Mansfield House Magazine, some material on the Clarion Scouts, and a little on the Barry Brotherhood, 1913-1914. The collection, which dates in the main from Thomas Jones's Glasgow period, is interesting, but without coherence. (ii) Papers, notes, and a little correspondence on the Women's Suffrage movement, 1906-1908 (Nos 82-105), most of the papers consisting of political literature issued by the Women's Social & Political Union. There are also notes prepared by Thomas Jones and his wife for speeches at the East Kilbride Liberal Associations, Oct. 1908, and elsewhere. Social and cultural,

This class consists of material relating to social service and to cultural organisations which Thomas Jones kept separately filed from the collections which have gone to form class C (Government and Society) and D (Education). The social service material consists, in the main, of correspondence etc. relating to refugees from Nazi oppression which is bound under individuals in alphabetical order. There is also a little material on the advisory committee established to co-ordinate the work of voluntary services in wartime (1933-1941). The cultural section consists of some scattered material relating to the chief organisations with which Thomas Jones was concerned and which, in some cases, were partly his own creation, such as C.E.M.A. - Arts Council. Much similar material is found scattered throughout the collection, in the personal classes, such as classes Q, R, V and W, and in the institutional, such as classes C, D, H, J, K and L. Social and Cultural: York Trust and York Clinic,

Nos 1-147. Correspondence and papers relating to the York Trust and York Clinic. The York Trust was founded in 1934 to improve the condition of the wage-earning class, to lessen fear and hostility among nations and to encourage the arts. The York Clinic for Psychological Medicine was set up at Guy's Hospital in 1944. Thomas Jones was Chairman of the York Clinic Council until 1947.
