Scope and content
This class consists of material relating to social service and to cultural organisations which Thomas Jones kept separately filed from the collections which have gone to form class C (Government and Society) and D (Education). The social service material consists, in the main, of correspondence etc. relating to refugees from Nazi oppression which is bound under individuals in alphabetical order. There is also a little material on the advisory committee established to co-ordinate the work of voluntary services in wartime (1933-1941). The cultural section consists of some scattered material relating to the chief organisations with which Thomas Jones was concerned and which, in some cases, were partly his own creation, such as C.E.M.A. - Arts Council. Much similar material is found scattered throughout the collection, in the personal classes, such as classes Q, R, V and W, and in the institutional, such as classes C, D, H, J, K and L. Arranged into: Refugees, Braun - Lazarus, 1937-1945 (M 1); Refugees, von Metzradt - Sonnenfeld, 1933-1954 (M 2); Voluntary Service Advisory Committee, 1939-1941 (M 3); and Pilgrim Trust, 1937-1955; Athenaeum, 1938-1945; British Council, 1939-1947; Arts Council, 1945-1953 (M 4).
