Shrievalty of Carmarthenshire,

A group of manuscript and printed papers, 1900-1903, acquired by John Morgan Davies, Froodvale, Llanwrda, by virtue of his office as high sheriff of co. Carmarthen, 1902. They include a transcript of the appointment, 6 March, 1902; correspondence from the Privy Council Office, 1900-1901; printed posters of Carmarthenshire Assizes, 1902-1903; a holograph letter from [the under-sheriff] D. E. Stephens, solicitor, Carmarthen; etc.

Letter book (carbon copies), 1902-1904, of John M. Davies, Froodvale, relating to his office as high sheriff of co. Carmarthen. Some of the letters are in the hand of John Parry, Froodvale. Among the principal correspondents are D. E. Stephens, under-sheriff, D. E. Williams, Ivy Bush Hotel, Carmarthen, Leo Culleton (designer of the sheriff's banners), Charles H. Athill, Richmond Herald, and W. C. Chick, Angel Livery Stables, Cardiff. The volume is indexed.

Correspondence, etc., relating to the appointment of John Morgan Davies, Froodvale, to be chairman and convener of the Provincial Committee of the Surveyors' Institution for South Wales and Monmouthshire (excluding Radnorshire). They include autograph letters to J. M. Davies from Julian C. Rogers, secretary to the Surveyors' Institution, from 12 Great George Street, Westminster, 1890-1893; a carbon copy of a letter from J. M. Davies to Julian C. Rogers, 1893; a cutting from The Land Agents' Record, 24 May, 1890; and draft minutes by J. M. Davies of a meeting of the Provincial Committee held at Cardiff, 3 May [1893], and notes of an address by J. M. Davies on 'The Diseases of the Larch'.

Eaton, Haverfordwest, 1840 (2) (requesting a valuation of the tithes of a district in the parish of Stainton), W[illiam] Davys Harries, Neuadd- fawr [Cil-y-cwm], [18]44 (irregularities in the recipient's apportionment of Cil-y-cwm), Thomas Hughes, Castelldu [Lampeter], 1840 (a tithe meeting at Brechfa), W. G. Davies, Traws Mawr [in Newchurch], 1839 (a request for a valuation of the parish of Conwill [Elfed] for the purposes of a new road rate, the need for a regular electoral registration committee in the parish), Geo. Good, from Croft Cottage, near Carmarthen, 1839 (a request for a valuation of the parish of Nevern for the purposes of tithe apportionment), W[illiam] Howell, Pendine, 1839 (a meeting in connection with tithe apportionment), W. G. Hughes, Carmarthen, 1839 (requesting a valuation of timber on farms purchased by the writer), J. Jones, Brynbran [ Cynwil Gaeo?], 1836 (opinions on the Poor Law Amendment Bill), (endorsed is a draft letter [1836] to [Sir David Davies?], relating to the tithe commutation of Llanwrda, Cayo, Llansawell, and Talley, and to the management of the writer's properties), Morris Jones, Carmarthen, 1838 (Mydrim tithe meeting), E. Also included in the group are a copy of a letter from D[avid] Davies to Morris Sayce, Kington, 1836 (comments on the terms of a lease); an undated draft letter from [David Davies] to [Sir David Davies?] ( the writer's opposition to an advance in the tithes of Talley); a statement, 1841, from Charles Bishop, Llandovery, to David Davies of the amount due from the latter for his proportion of the expense of tithe commutation in the parish of Llandilofawr, together with a receipt, 1842, for the same; and undated particulars of the tithe commutation of David Davies in respect of Talyfan and Mount in Llandilo[-fawr].
