David Jones: Caneuon

A chap-book, entitled Drych y Merched neu Fuchedd Araith am Wragedd yn Ddwy Rann, y Gyntaf yn cynnwys Dull y rhai Ffol, Yr Ail yn cynnwys Cynneddfau y rhai Doeth, containing two songs, in Welsh, written, 1754, by David Jones of Trefriw (1708?-1785) and arranged for printing. The margins of the volume are covered with references to books and manuscripts, in both Welsh and English.

David Jones (Dewi Fardd): Caneuon a baledi

A collection of Welsh songs and ballads written, 1736-1755, by David Jones (Dewi Fardd) of Trefriw. Many of the songs were afterwards printed by David Jones in Blodeugerdd Cymru (1759; second edn 1779). A modern index to the poets has been inserted at p. v.

David Jones: Anterliwtiau

Two interludes, in Welsh, 18 cent., the first (incomplete) relating to Welsh chronicle from the time of Brutus to the time of George III in the hand of David Jones of Trefriw, the second (beginning imperfect) relating to the story of Cain and Abel. Thomas Edwards (Twm o'r Nant (1739-1810) is known to have written an interlude on the latter subject.

Llyfr Dafydd Jones o Drefriw,

(a) A notebook (32 pp.) in the autograph of Dafydd Jones o Drefriw, containing 'cywyddau' by Edmwnd Prys and Wiliam Cynwal and a brief account of the dispute between them, etc. The 'cywyddau' are numbered 1-3, 50-54, and 36. On the cover EW has written 'Fragments of Edmund Prys, & Wm Cynwal', and 'Iolo Morganwg ai piau';
(b & c) Loose papers containing a list of books, a statement of accounts between David Jones and Richard Lathrop, a draft title-page for 'Y Greal Bychan', and poetry by RT, etc.

A commonplace book containing prognostications, weather lore, chronology, calendars, a table of Easter dates for 1600-1701 compiled by Rice Jones in 1598, an account of the English alphabet, historical 'englynion', and miscellaneous verse. The volume belonged in the eighteenth century to David Jones, Trefriw, who copied into it extracts from William Salesbury: A Dictionary in Englyshe and Welshe ... and from the almanacks of Thomas Jones, and some genealogical memoranda.

The collection includes personal and business correspondence of family members of David Jones, and papers of Gwilym Cowlyd, Ieuan Glan Geirionydd, Gwilym Hiraethog and other literary figures.

A small volume written in the eighteenth century lettered on the spine 'Llyvr Dos=parth a Cadwe= digaeth Cerdd Dannau, I'. The scribe was David Jones ('Dewi Fardd') of Trefriw. The contents are as follows: pp. 1-23, 'Clod Cerdd ai Dechreuad' beginning 'Fy Mryd sydd ar hyn om llafur ddwyn ar ddeall it Darllewr . . . Eithr o arfer Cerdd Theoricall y Nef, ni ymadroddwn am dano' [cf. B.M. Addit. MS 14989, ff. 82 recto-111 verso, and also D. Gwenallt Jones, 'Clod Cerdd Dafod', in Llên Cymru, I, pp. 186-7, and Gwendraeth Jones, 'Siôn Conwy III a'i Waith', in B.B.C.S., XXII, pp. 23-4 in particular]; pp. 24-30, 'Gryffydd ap Cynan Twysog Cymru a wnaeth Gyfraith ar y Gwyr wrth Gerdd, yr hon a elwir Ystatud Gryffydd ap Cynan', beginning 'Llyma y sawl y sydd rydd yddynt Glera . . .' and ending '. . . a Disgyblion, gwedi Cael graddau or blaen mewn Eisteddfodau neu Neithorau Reiol. Vychan'), being probably in the autograph of Edward Williams, 'Iolo Morganwg'. There is a triad on p.54. On the fly-leaf in a later hand is written 'Dosparth Cerdd Dafod'.
