Correspondence and papers, 1908-1924, relating to the Welsh Bibliographical Society and the publication of its Journal. Most of the letters discuss the attraction of suitable material for publication in the Journal and its passage through the press. The correspondents include Sir John Ballinger (2), 1919, D. Rhys Phillips (52), the society's secretary, 1908-1919, and D. Lleufer Thomas, 1915.

Papers, [early 19 cent.]-1927, of Sir John Ballinger, which include articles, reviews, reports and addresses by Ballinger, some of which relate to libraries in Britain, including a report on the University College of North Wales, Bangor library and reports and other papers, 1903-1910, relating to the Library Association; articles, addresses and notes by Ballinger relating to literary matters and (mainly Welsh) historical events and figures; and papers and correspondence, 1903-1906, relating to the Bible in Wales.

Sir John Ballinger

Most of the letters, 1897-1926, relate to academic and research matters, many of them bibliographical queries, or to J. H. Davies's researches and publications. Some concern professional matters and developments at the Cardiff Free Libraries and later the National Library of Wales where Ballinger was the first chief librarian. Some of the later letters relate to the establishment and early growth of the National Library and to Davies's membership of its court, council and internal committees. There are many references to the National Library's campaign to secure the status of a copyright receipt (legal deposit) library and to wrest improved funding from the exchequer, and some to the deposit of the early archival collections and printed works at the Library. There are a few references to family life. A few of the letters from the Cardiff period are written by Harry Farr on behalf of Sir John Ballinger.

A printed leaflet relating to the Haddenham Village (Buckinghamshire) Pageant held on Whit Monday (i.e. 20 May) 1929, which included a Druidical Whitsun Ceremony; also included is a copy of Invocation to [the] Sun given at the ceremony, and a letter dated 21 May 1929 from Walter Rose to Sir John Ballinger (1860-1933) relating to the ceremony.

Often Gwilym Cowlyd is invited to attend and adjudicate at eisteddfodau. The correspondents include Sir John Ballinger, 1893, Thomas Gee (2), 1877-1889, and Alfred Neobard Palmer, 1882.

A volume containing an offprint of Sir John Ballinger, 'Katheryn of Berain, a study in North Wales family history', Y Cymmrodor, 40 (1929), 1-42, which was given to R. D. Roberts by the author in 1929 in recognition of the help he received while correcting the proofs (see inside front cover, ff. i verso-iv). Genealogical and biographical notes on the Salesbury and related families, [c. 1934], in the hand of R. D. Roberts, occur on ff. ii verso-iv, pp. 2, 45-54 and genealogical tables I-III, together with press cuttings, 1930-1933, relating to Katheryn of Berain and Mrs Hester Piozzi tipped in on pp. 55-56, photographs of Plas Berain, Llanefydd, Denbighshire (3), 1906-1923, pasted on f. iv verso and inside back cover, and cuttings from William R. David Davies: General Correspondence,

The correspondents include Sir John Ballinger, E. Penllyn Jones, and A. C. Humphreys-Owen, Glansevern. Some of the correspondents comment on the recent publication of the Llandinam Magazine published in 1901. The file also contains a large number of letters from David Davies to his mother and some other individuals while he was travelling, giving his impressions of the countries and describing in some detail his travels and experiences. These countries include the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea and China. Many are written on board various shipping vessels while travelling. The file also contains the following texts of lectures or articles 'Impressions of Norway', 'Lecture on Japan', 'Impressions of Corea [sic]' and 'The Irish Problem & its Solution'. There are also some letters addressed to David Davies while on his travels and give him advice on travelling and where to go.
