Fifty letters, 1937-1961, from John Cowper Powys (ff. 6-49, 51-60 verso), one letter, 1959, from his companion, Phyllis Playter (f. 50), and six letters and two postcards, 1937-1939 (ff. 62-72), together with an inscribed photograph, 1937 (f. 61), from Llewelyn Powys, to Margaret Moon (afterwards Margaret Newton). Many of the letters contain reminiscences of Montacute, Somerset, childhood home of the Powys brothers, and birthplace of Margaret Moon. Two of the letters from John Cowper Powys (ff. 30-32 verso) are in the hand of Phyllis Playter, writing as his amanuensis. Also included are three letters, 1990, from Margaret Newton to Paul Roberts, editor of the Powys Society Newsletter (ff. 1-5).
The letters contain references to Thomas Hardy (ff. 13 verso, 40 recto-verso, 48), Theodore Dreiser (f. 44), W. B. Yeats (f. 29 verso) and Theodore Francis Powys (ff. 38 verso, 39 verso).

Some three hundred and forty-three letters and cards, 1922-1953 (mostly 1926, 1945-1953), from Lucy Penny to her daughter Mary Casey, containing personal and family news, together with occasional enclosures such as press cuttings, textile swatches, pressed flowers and family letters; from October 1946, when Mary and Gerard Casey settled in Kenya, the majority of the letters are air letters.
The enclosed correspondence comprises thirteen letters addressed to Lucy from Phyllis Playter, 16 October 1945 (postcard), Littleton [C.] Powys, 5 June 1950, 8 and 24 April 1953, John Cowper Powys, 20 July 1950, [13] October 1951, Willie Powys, 26 July and 4 [?August] 1950, Katie Powys, 28 October 1951, 21 August 1953, Marian Powys, 16 November 1952, 1 March 1953, and Littleton Alfred Powys, 10 February 1953; and six letters to Mary from Katie Powys, 27 March 1947, 22 October and 26 November 1949, 8 January and 16 April 1950, and Gertrude Powys, 16 April 1950. Some six hundred and seventy-one air letters, letters and postcards, 1966-1977, from Mary Casey, Timau, Kenya, to her mother Lucy Penny, containing personal and family news, and occasionally enclosing letters from family and friends, photographs and press cuttings.
The enclosed correspondence comprises six letters addressed to Mary from correspondents including Katey [Grey], 1970-1971, and Peter [Powys Grey], 1974, and three to Lucy Penny, including one from Phyllis Playter, 13 February 1970. Towards the end of this period Mary and Gerard Casey were spending more time in the UK, prior to returning permanently.

There is also a copy of Llewelyn Powys, The Cradle of God (London, 1949), presented by John Cowper Powys to his 'friend of many years' Evan Roberts, in 1949.

Phyllis Playter letters to Frederick Davies

Two hundred and eighty-eight letters, 1962-1978, from Phyllis Player to Frederick Davies, giving an account of John Cowper Powys shortly before his death in Blaenau Ffestiniog in June 1963 and discussing the posthumous growth of interest in his writings, particularly among members of Cambridge University. Some of the letters have been published in Frederick Davies, 'Recollections of John Cowper Powys and Phyllis Playter', The Powys Review, 19 (1986), 58-66, and 20 (1987), 47-57. Also included are a few letters from Phyllis Playter to Frederick Davies's mother.

John Cowper Powys and Phyllis Playter letters to Dorothy Meech

Sixty autograph letters, 1944-1945, 1953-1962, from John Cowper Powys to his typist Mrs Dorothy May Meech, Dorchester (ff. 1-24, 34-37, 40, 43-68, 71-72, 74-77), together with ten letters, 1955-1956, 1960-1961, from Powys's partner Phyllis Playter to Meech (ff. 25-33, 38-39, 41-42, 69-70, 73). The letters mainly concern Powys's works in progress, manuscripts sent to Meech for typing, Mrs Meech's health and that of Powys's relatives, as well as childhood recollections of Weymouth and references to house-hunting in Blaenau Ffestiniog prior to Powys and Playter's move there from Corwen in 1955. Playter's letters are evidently written at times when Powys was too ill or tired to correspond himself. A self-caricature in ink by Powys is on f. 53 verso. Also included is a photograph of John Cowper Powys inscribed to Mrs Meech and dated 20 December 1950 (f. 7).
