A volume containing about ninety letters, 1840-63, from the Reverend Morris Williams ('Nicander'), writing from Bangor, Amlwch and Llanrhyddlad, to Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), with a draft copy of one letter, 1850, from 'Eben Fardd' to 'Nicander'. A few of the letters have been printed in Adgof Uwch Ahghof. Also in the volume are a letter, 1865, from 'Nicander' to an unnamed correspondent and two letters, 1868, one incomplete, from 'Nicander' to [Richard Roberts] 'Bardd Treflys'. At the end of the volume are three letters, 1862, from Eunice Jones (Liverpool), daughter of Peter Jones ('Pedr Fardd'), writing from Clifton and Llanrhyddlad Rectory, to 'Eben Fardd' (enquiring about the connection between her father's family on his mother's side and the Wynnes of Glyn Llifon; 'englynion' by 'Pedr Fardd'). Pasted into the volume near the beginning is a cutting containing a letter, 1849, from M. Williams, ['Nicander'], Amlwch to John James ('Ioan Meirion'); there is also a loose cutting of a photograph of 'Nicander'.

A folder containing eight files of original letters and copies of letters and poetry from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). There is also a transcript of a letter from the Reverend Thomas Ellis, Holyhead to the Reverend Humphrey Owen and the Reverend J. Hoare, 1742 (the original letter is preserved in NLW MS 478), and a copy of Evan Evans's elegy to Lewis Morris, with notes on the text. File 4: Transcripts of letters from Edward Richard, Ystrad Meurig, c. 1759-1766, to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd'). There are also copies of two short letters to Evan Evans from Roderick Lewis, Trefeglwys, and William Howell, Llanidloes, which were written on the same sheet as Edward Richard's letter of 1 March 1766. The original letters are preserved in NLW MS Panton 74. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). Holograph letters (13) and some poetry,1791-1819, of D[avid] Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr, Bettws St Garmon, etc. Some of the letters have been published in [John Jones] 'Myrddin Fardd', Adgof uwch Anghof (Penygroes, 1883). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. There is also some poetry in English by [John Blackwell ('Alun')] and in Welsh by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'). A journal, 1 June 1832 (not 1831 as written in the top left of the first page) - July 1836, with a few additional entries to 1841, kept by the Reverend W[illia]m Davies, Independent minister and schoolmaster, better known as Dr William Davies (1805-59), Ffrwd-fâl or Froodvale, Cynwyl Gaeo, Carmarthenshire. The writer was ordained 29 June 1832 and in a copy of a certificate of baptism, 1833, to be found in the volume he described himself as 'Independent Minister, officiating at Coverack, Prelow [sic] and Helford [Cornwall].' He left Cornwall 7 July 1834, sailing from Coverack, and returned home to Wales. Other entries record that he went to Froodvale 25 August 1834 and that he opened his grammar school near Froodvale on 2 February 1835. It appears that in the period 1837-41 he received annual payments from Crugybar Congregation for services performed monthly in the chapel. The journal also contains items of verse by William Davies, including a Welsh translation of the hymn by [Isaac] Watts 'How glorious is our heav'nly king' ('O mor fawr a gogoneddus ydyw Brenin daer a Nef'); lines composed by M. M., Coverack, Cornwall received in a letter from 'C. R.' dated 15 September 1834, the second stanza of which begins 'In search of health that boon of heaven For Wales his course does tend'; and lists of books, e.g. 'Books that I read since I came to Froodvale - Aug. 25, 1834' and ' The Books which I use in teaching children'.

A composite volume containing day and memoranda books of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') and of his children James E[benezer] Thomas and Catherine Thomas. They include a few diary entries of Catherine Thomas, 1846-9; parish relief accounts of Catherine Thomas and others, 1847-56; Old Testament annals; a catechism; biographical notes (dates and times of births, etc.) on members of the family of 'Eben Fardd'; poetry by James E. Thomas entitled 'Englynion Iago Fardd' and 'Cynnygion at Farddoniaeth gan Iago Fardd pan yn 16 oed'; log entries relating to Bangor British School, 1850, and particulars of qualifications required of pupil teachers, etc.; particulars of qualifications required of candidates for admission to Bala [CM] College, extracted from a letter from the Principal, L[ewis] Edwards to 'Eben Fardd', 1842; questions and answers on Scripture history and on English history; essays on 'Perseverance', 'Liberty', 'Wonders of Creation', 'The Memory', and 'Peace of Conscience' by James E. Thomas, September - October, 1858; an essay by 'Austin' [J. E. Thomas] on 'Perygl a drwg gwrthgiliad ynghyd a'r pethau sydd yn arwain iddo'; post office memoranda (delivery of registered letters, etc.), 1856-8; etc. The volume is lettered 'Iago Fardd's MSS'.

Some of the poems are in the hand of the compiler but the majority are in the form of cuttings, largely of the second and third quarters of the nineteenth century, with annotations from Y Drysorfa, Trysorfa y Plant, Y Gwyliedydd, [Y Tyst Apostolaidd], Yr Herald Cymraeg, Y Gwladgarwr, Yr Arweinydd, Y Greal [Llangollen], Y Dysgedydd, Taliesin, Goleuad Cymru, Baner ac Amserau Cymru, Y Cymro, Yr Anybynwr, Seren Gomer, Y Drych, etc. The spine is lettered 'Gweithiau Beirdd Lleyn ac Eifionydd'.

A composite notebook labelled 'Gwaith Wiliam Elias, &c.' containing transcripts by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of 'englynion', 'cywyddau', etc. largely by or relating to William Elias (1708-87) [Plas-y-glyn, Llanfwrog, Anglesey]. The poets represented in addition to William Elias are D(afydd) Parry, Michael Prichard, J. R. ('Englynion i annerch Owen Gruffydd', etc.), Ed. Morus, Owen Gruffydd and Thomas Edwards ('Cywydd Marwnad i'r Canmoladwy a'r Anrhydeddus ddiweddar William Elias'). There is also a note on Peniarth MS 201 ('Allan o Ysgriflyfr Peniarth [i.e. Hengwrt]. -Rhif 188'). Loose papers comprise a copy of the gravestone inscription of William Elias and his wife, 'Cerdd i Ddiolch i Fachgen o Landwrog am Fenthyg Llyfr Notes', together with some 'englynion' (in pencil), and a leaf from Eurgrawn Mon, 1825, pp. 14[7]-8 (see The Letters of Goronwy Owen, ed. J. H. Davies (Cardiff, 1924), pp. 203-4). Another loose item, a folio from an eighteenth century manuscript, has been restored to its place at the beginning of Wynnstay MS 7.

Two notebooks containing holograph 'cywyddau', 'englynion', 'hir a thoddeidiau', and 'caneuon' by Robert Williams ('Trebor Mai'). Almost the entire contents are included in 'Trebor Mai': Y Geninen (Llanrwst, 1869), and there are some marginal emendations and instructions to the compositor. Inset is an autograph letter, 1930, from John Ballinger, The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, to J. T. Evans, Llanrwst, relating to the whereabouts of the two volumes and to the recipient's collection of items printed at Trefriw and Llanrwst.

Loose papers consist of a note on [John Mortimer (d. 1736)] and an envelope addressed to 'Myrddin Fardd, At:- Mrs. Prices, The Fairs, St. Michael's Hamlet, Liverpool' containing a note on Ellias Morys, Llwyndyrys and William Elias the poet headed 'Mrs. Pierce, The Friars, St. Michael's Hamlet, Liverpool', with an 'englyn' by Owain Lleyn on the reverse side (in pencil).
