Seventeen letters, 1888-93, to D. Silvan Evans from [the Reverend] T[homas] Briscoe, Holyhead mainly concerning points of translation (Biblical, the Apostles' Creed, etc.), with references also to the non-resident canonry offered to the addressee.

Twenty-eight letters, [18]80-1903, from the Reverend John Owen (1854-1926), successively Welsh professor and classical lecturer at St David's College, Lampeter, warden and headmaster of Llandovery College, dean of St Asaph, principal of St David's College, Lampeter and bishop of St Davids, twenty-seven to D. Silvan Evans (college examinations, acknowledging congratulations, the Welsh Prayer Book committee, etc.) and one to [J. H. Silvan] Evans, 1903 (sympathy on the death of his father, the completion of the dictionary).

Nine letters, 1871-6, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'; 1833-77), Bala (articles by 'Ioan Pedr' in Y Traethodydd [1872-3], offering to copy vocabularies in the British Museum, Mr Mackensie of Glasgow proposes to call on the addressee); and six letters, one incomplete, [18]73-84, to D. Silvan Evans from [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys' (1807-89), Bangor and Holyhead (an invitation to adjudicate at the Bangor Eisteddfod, family matters, the fate of two sacks of old letters addressed to the writer).

Eight letters, 1858 [?1859]-74, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil, seven of which are addressed to D. Silvan Evans and one to W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (copy). Accompanying one of the letters to D. Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.

Ten letters, 1869-94, to D. Silvan Evans from R[ichard] Williams, Welshpool and Celynog, Newtown (the 'Topographicon', some names of streams in Montgomeryshire, efforts to obtain a pension for the addressee, gifts of books).

(I) Miscellanea of Morris Davies. Miscellaneous scraps accumulated by Morris Davies, Bangor, including manuscript hymns and cuttings from printed hymn books; verses (incomplete?) on the death of William Oliver, Dolgoed, Rhydfendigaid (died 1828), a short biography by Gwen Evans of Francis Evans (1830-76), printer, Pwllheli, and short notes on other Pwllheli printers; cuttings of press contributions by M[orris] D[avies] on hymnology; extracts from William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), etc. (Ii) Llythyrau Morris Davies, etc. Eleven letters, 1868-76, from Morris Davies, Upper Bangor to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans at Llan ym Mawddwy and Llanwrin. The letters relate almost entirely to bibliographical matters and there are references to the recipient's edition of William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), to the writer's study of hymnology and to his collection of the works of Daniel Rowland, Llangeithio. A mass of bibliographical notes, presumably enclosed with the letters, are bound in at the end of the volume. One of these notes is written on the dorse of a printed notice of a meeting of the committee of Bangor British School, 1855.

A scrap-book of D. Silvan Evans chiefly containing 'Nugae Canorae', being holographs and press cuttings of Welsh poetry by D. Silvan Evans and of Welsh translations by him of poetry by [Johann Wolfgang Von] Goethe, Anacreon, Sappho, Plato, etc.; press cuttings of reviews, 1887-97, of parts of D. Silvan Evans, Dictionary of the Welsh Language ... Geiriadur Cymraeg (Carmarthen, 1887-96); copious holographs and press cuttings by D. Silvan Evans of family memoranda (entries of births, baptisms, marriages and deaths, press cuttings of obituary notices, etc.); holograph letters to D. Sixty-two letters and two postcards, 1869-83 and undated, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend E[dward] L[owry] Barnwell, Melksham, largely concerning Archaeologia Cambrensis, of which D. Silvan Evans was editor, 1871-5. In addition there are three letters to E. L. Barnwell from [the Reverend] Reginald Hughes, Glyn [Ceiriog], 1871, J. H. Le Keux, Durham, 1871, and Richard R. Brash, Cork, 1874, respectively.

Twenty-six letters and postcards, etc., 1886-[19]01, from J. Gwenogfryn Evans, Oxford and Llanbedrog, twenty five to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans (replying to queries and giving correct readings, the writer's own work, sympathy on the death of Mrs Evans, the Dictionary, asking for permission to catalogue the addressee's Welsh manuscripts, etc.) and one, [18]97, to [J. H. Silvan] Evans (advice concerning the Dictionary).

Fifty-eight letters, [1875]-1902, from the Reverend D[avid] Howell ('Llawdden'), Wrexham, Gresford and St Davids, all except two to D. Silvan Evans (personal matters, the 'Geiriadur' and Lady Llanover, a letter from W. Spurrell, Carmarthen (encl.), condolences, the death of [Canon] George Griffiths, the writer's own view of public funerals, how he himself has suffered from 'cliquism', a printed hymn by the writer (encl.), etc.). The other two letters are from D. Howell to Mrs [D. Silvan] Evans, 1887 (Tegid's illness and their own anxiety about Arthur), and to Henry [Silvan Evans], 1898 (a newspaper comment on the application for a Civil List pension for the addressee's father) respectively.

Silvan Evans from J[ohn] M[orris] Jones ('Ioan Cunllo'), Rhyd Lewis (mention of [Benjamin Williams] 'Gwynionydd', literary matters, the Aberystwyth Eisteddfod, the Dictionary, the death of Mr Hughes, Neuadd fawr, the writer's health, money matters, sympathy, the death of the writer's nephew and of the Reverend Josiah Rees, Llangrannog, etc.).

Fourteen letters, 1887-99, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend Elias Owen, FSA, Efenechtyd Rectory, Ruthin and Llanyblodwel Vicarage, Oswestry (words and their meanings, folklore, etc.). Enclosed is one letter, [18]88, to Elias Owen from (the Reverend) M[organ] Hughes, Derwen Rectory, Corwen.

Thirteen letters, one incomplete, 1880-4, to D. Silvan Evans from [Henry] Brinley Richards, Kensington (queries concerning Welsh history, early Welsh music, etc.).

A volume in continuation of Cwrtmawr MS 758 containing fifty holograph letters, postcards, etc., from John Rhys and one holograph letter on his behalf by Elspeth Rhys from Oxford, etc., 1885-1901, to D. Silvan Evans at Llanwrin. Subjects of the correspondence include an interpretation of a text ('Neu vi luossawc yntrydar ....') from the Book of Taliesin, numerous problems of Welsh etymology, a manuscript dictionary discovered by Gwenogvryn Evans at the Bodleian Library, observations on the recipient's dictionary, adjudication on essays [submitted to the London national eisteddfod, 1887], arrangements for meetings of the Tithe Agitation Committee (1887) (of which the writer was Secretary), an address at Bangor, a contribution to Y Traethodydd, the application of J. M[orris] Jones for the lectureship at Bangor [University College], the illness of Dr [Gudbrandur] Vigfússon [at Oxford], an English version of an inscribed englyn at Michaelston-super-Ely, condolence on the recipient's bereavement [i.e. the death of his wife], a gift to the recipient of the writer's Studies in the Arthurian Legend, Mr [E. G. B.] Phillimore's attack on the 'caddishness' of Welsh people and especially of members of the 'Dafydd ab Gwylym Club', the interpretation of the old stones at Wareham, the progress of [J. Marchant Williams [from London] to Egerton Phillimore and to [Daniel Lewis Lloyd] bishop [of Bangor] (copy), 1897 (2) (a Civil List grant to D. Silvan Evans), John Rhys to 'Harry Silvan' [J. H. Silvan Evans], 1897-1906 and undated (3) (a Civil List grant to D. Silvan Evans, the livings of Llanddewi Velfrey and Llandow (with a reference to the claim of [John Edwin] de Hirsch-Davies), John Rhys to [Robert Roberts ('Y Sgolor Mawr')], 1879 (1) (Celtic philology) (23pp.), and Myvanwy Rhys, Aberystwyth to [J. H.] Davies, [19]20 (1) (returning the John Rhys letters contained in Cwrtmawr MSS 758-9).

Eighteen letters to D. Silvan Evans, seventeen of which, 1870-98, are from T[homas] C[harles] Edwards, Liverpool, Aberystwyth and Bala (bibliographical and lexicographical matters, matters in connection with the University College, Aberystwyth, the writer's paper on Salesbury, Dr Lewis Edwards's translation of Cowper's hymn 'God moves in a mysterious way') and one, [18]76, from E. P[enllyn] Jones, University College, Aberystwyth. The last three letters from T. C. Edwards are in another hand except for the signature.
