Letter from Shitab Rai

Date(s) on item: Reg. yr 6, Muharram 24 sent; Safar 6 received: September 28 received
Some time back I sent a letter from the Nawab Sahib and a letter-bag from Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik. The two harkarahs who had brought this letter-bag are staying here and are waiting for your reply. I will be grateful if you could send them the reply so that they can return.
Perhaps you remember that when you visited this place you promised that when you would reach Murshidabad you would have the title deeds of Nalah and Maldah districts signed and sealed in my name by the Nawab Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan Bahadur. I had sent two of my men to accompany you so that they could bring back these documents to me. I have not received these documents until now. I hear that the Nawab is coming to this province on 17 Muharram and would most probably visit Calcutta. It may be a good opportunity to ask him to issue a parvanah withdrawing the deeds of ownership of the Districts of Maslda and Nalah from Nawab Samsam al-Daulah Bahadur and issuing a new one in my name

Letter from Shitab Rai

Thank you very much for your letter of 29 Ramadan asking me to keep an eye on the harkarahs who carry post from Nawab Shuja al-Dalaulah between Allahabad and Azimabad and instructing them not to disclose the contents of the letters to anyone else, along with a letter from Hafiz Rahmat Khan Bahadur dated 11 Shawwal. -- As far as the matter of post from Nawab Shuja al-Daulah is concerned I have instructed all harkarahs dealing with this post that they should not allow anyone to interfere in this post. Meanwhile, the letter of Nawab Hafiz al-Mulk Bahadur was sent the same day. You have complained about the delay in receiving the revenue money from here. I have never neglected my duties in this respect and have worked hard day and night to achieve the maximum results. I have recently reorganized the system of collection and a few days ago had sent the details to Nawab Muin al-Daulah Sayyid Muhammad Raza Khan Bahadur Muzaffar Jang who may have already informed you about this. Thank you very much for your letter informing me that you have appointed Mr Rumbock Sahib, who is a very able administrator, to take charge of the Koshal Kothi at Azimabad and that he would be leaving in four days and reach here shortly afterwards. As soon as Mr Middleton leaves here Mr Ronbock will act as his substitute. You have also expressed your concern at the inefficient way the revenue is being collected at present and that we should try our best to make it the system that we collect all instalments at a proper time. The appointment of Mr Ranbock is a welcome step and no one has any doubt in his abilities. We will offer him whatever help and advice is needed and which Mr [Samuel] Middleton would approve
As far as the collection of revenue is concerned I can assure you that we work day and night to achieve the best results. The only exception is the province of Shikare, which is lying waste and is uninhabited. We are trying our best to chase the defaulters and hope to receive the defaulted amounts in the near future

Letter from Shitab Rai

Thank you very much for your letter of 7 Jumada II, reg. yr. 8 received on 16th instant. You have written that the demand for the furnace is small while the demand of the army for rupees is much greater and that I should arrange to have new coins minted at Arcott mint and deposit the newly minted coins in the treasury month by month. I should also make sure that the goldsmiths do not make undue profits out of this affair. Today is Tuesday, 20th Jumada II, reg. yr. 8, I with the approval of Mr Middleton Bahadur Ikhtiyarjang and Mr Thomas Rank Bahadur Dilava Jang, who is the Daorghah of the mint at Azimabad, called all bankers, gold and silver merchants and informed them about the issue of the new coins. But they replied that there was not enough gold and silver available in the city which could allow us to mint four Lac rupees every month. They could mint new coins only after melting old coins. For each one hundred rupees minted there is a charge of five rupees. Date(s) from item: Reg. yr 8, Jumada II 20 sent: December 12 received 1766

I have already sent you some of the letters I had received from high officials. I have now received another letter dated 5 Dhu al-Hijjah, reg. yr. 5 from the capital, along with a letter from H.M. addressed to you. This is being sent to you under separate cover. Rajah Daler Singh Bahadur has written to me that he has written to Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik Bahadur regarding some of the issues as well as about your request. I will let you know as soon as a reply is received. If it was necessary to send the above mentioned request to Nawab Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan Bahadur it will proper if he [Shitab Rae] is not involved. It has been ascertained from a letter of Rajah Daler Singh that Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik is annoyed with Mir Jafar because of non-payment of some money

Thank you for your letter of 25 Muharram complaining that you have not received any reply to your last two letters. The Nawab Sahib, before leaving for Calcutta, had given all . The testimonials, which Nawab Wazir had sent more than a month ago with his letter, did not carry his official seal. Moreover, these documents did not have your full titles and honours listed. These were, therefore, returned for amendments and corrections. We received the corrected documents and testimonials from the Nawab Wazir through Jagat Seths on 10 Safar, reg. yr. 5. Knowing very well the Nawab's concern for these documents I am holding these until his returns. It is essential that we keep all correspondence relating to this affair very secret and letters are sent in secure bags and by trusted messengers

Whatever intelligence reports I have received from the capital until today were handed over to Mr Amyatt to be passed on to you. I hope you have read all these reports. In the letters sent from the capital on 6 Jumada II, reg. yr. 5 it is written that Jankuji Marhatta was causing trouble near the capital and had invaded the capital on 26 Jumada I, reg. yr. 5. The Nawab Wazir sent his army and his sardars and as a result there was a great battle fought between the two forces. In addition to a large number of people who were killed or injured a number of high-ranking Marhatta Sardars were also killed. At the end, the Marhattas could not face the enemy and fled from the battlefield. They were chased to their tents and at the end had to negotiate the terms of a truce. It was agreed that the Marhattas will offer ten Lac rupees out of which three Lacs will be given to Rajah Ram Prashad and seven Lacs to Najib Khan Rohila. After this decision, Jankuji Marhatta marched towards Lahore. On 3 Jumada II, reg. yr. 5 he encamped near Barnalah, a distance of 12 Karoh from Lahore. Rajah Daler Singh accompanied him until four manzils. As soon as the Nawab Vazir and the Emperor get a respite from the Marhattas, they divert their attention towards the troubles caused by Prince Ali Gohar. This is a fact. The messengers of the Prince intercepted the letters of Nawab Wazir, which were sent to you. Meanwhile if any of the messengers manages to escape and comes here with letters I will pass them on to you. Whatever letters I have been receiving for you so far have been dispatched to you promptly. It is reported that the Prince with Muhammad Quli Khan Bahadur and a force of seven to eight thousand cavalry has crossed the Ganges near Benares and wants to come to Azimabad. Maharajah Ram Narayan wants to come out on Thursday. I will be accompanying him with my force

I hope you have received my earlier petitions by now. Since you left for Murshidabad and later returned to Calcutta I have not received any reply from you. Before leaving for Murshidbad you assured me that after meeting Nawab Shuja al-Mulk Bahadur you will send me a parvanah issued by him with his own seal granting the districts of Malda, Talaj [?] and the mahall belonging to the jagir of Nawab Samsam al-Daulah Bahadur Mansurjang to me. As I have not received this document I am feeling many difficulties. In this respect I would like to bring to your notice that Khvajah Muhammadi Khan who was in Malda lately, does not have good relations with Kamgar Khan. I happened to be present in Kamgar Khan's pargana when Muhammadi Khan attacked us and killed seven of our men and injured fifteen people. My people had no option but to respond and killed six of their men and injured a similar number. Muhammadi Khan bears a grudge against me and wishes that I should return to Azimabad. Because of this he has been complaining against me to Shuja al-Mulk Bahadur. As I do not consider anyone else but you as the sole authority I appeal to you to intervene and write to the Nawab Sahib to take appropriate action against Muhammadi Khan. As Nawab Nasir al-Mulk is with you in Calcutta at present it is suggested that you ask him to procure the aforesaid parvanah from the Nawab Sahib and send it to me
