Letters,

Fifteen holograph letters, 1844 and undated, largely of a personal nature, written by E[liza] Ramsay, from [Glasgow], Trinity Gask, etc., to her brother A. C. Ramsay. Some of the letters are addressed to the Museum of Economic Geology, Charing Cross, London, to the Ordnance Geological Survey, Llandovery, and to Dolau Cothie.

Seventeen holograph letters from Elizabeth Johnes, 'Betha' [Lady Elizabeth Hills-Johnes], C[harlotte] A[nna] M[aria] J[ohnes], and Richard Dixon, from Dolau Cothi, to A. C. Ramsay, 1844-1845 and undated (an invitation to lunch on the Gogofau, a gatekeeper near Llansawel, observations on plants with leaves and blossoms enclosed, a stone sketched on Gogofau, personal). Some of the letters are addressed to Llandovery, to the Ordnance Geological Survey at Builth and at Rhayader, and to Charing Cross, London.

One hundred and seven holograph letters written largely by An[dre]w C. Ramsay to [Mary Louisa] Ramsay, 1853-1881 (the activities of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom and the Geological Survey of Ireland, personal and family affairs, observations on Gloucester Cathedral, the writer's report to Warwick Board of Health, a long chat with Charles Darwin, comments on Lady Llanover's attitude to the harp, comments on the international situation (1870), an account of a visit to Hartlepools, impressions of Lorna Doone (1872), the writer's report on Gibraltar, the recipient's European holiday (1880), etc.). A few of the letters are written from Llangollen, Llanfairynghornwy, Holyhead, and Dolaucothy. Among the few letters not in the hand of Andrew C. Ramsay are three written to him by his wife from the Congregational Manse, Oban, 1872.

Lyon Playfair letters

Sixty-six holograph letters, 1841-1843 and undated, from [Sir Hugh] Lyon Playfair (later 1st baron Playfair of St. Andrews) to Andrew [Crombie] Ramsay. The letters relate largely to their professional interests and activities, and there are numerous references to Sir Henry Thomas de la Beche, Dr. William Buckland, etc. Some of the earlier letters are addressed to the Ordnance Geological Survey at Haverfordwest, at Fishguard, and at Llandovery. At the end of the volume is a list of French adjectives 'used before and after the noun, according to their signification'.
