Album of Richard Rees,

An album of 'memoranda, made to the year 1857', together with copious annotations and an index, by Richard Rees (born 1781) of Alltycham, Pontardawe, seventh child by the second marriage of Josiah Rees (1744-1804), Unitarian minister, of Gellionnen, parish of Llan-giwg (Llanguicke), Glamorgan. The volume consists largely of holograph letters addressed for the most part to Richard Rees, the writers including Josiah Rees, 1802-3 (relating partly to the church at Gellionnen); William Wyndham Grenville, baron Grenville, 1818 (a description of the writer's home at Dropmore, information concerning Neath Abbey); George Owen Rees, Guy's Hospital, London, 1846 (biographical notes on the writer's father, Josiah Rees); C[hristopher] R[ice] M[ansel] T[albot], London, 1848; C[onnop Thirlwall], bishop of St. Davids, 1848; Geo. Rice Trevor, aft. 4th baron Dynevor, 1838 (concerning Neath Abbey); John M. Traherne, Coedriglan, Cardiff, 1848; [Edward Copleston, bishop of Llandaff, 1848]; [Sir Thomas Phillipps, Middle Hill, 1848]; H[enry] Hussey Vivian, London, 1855 (the death of John Henry Vivian); etc. The miscellaneous documents contained in the volume include material towards a pedigree of the family of Rees of Gelligron; the certificate of ordination of Josiah Rees at Gellionnen, 6 August, 1767; poetry and ballads, including an epigram by Thomas Rees, fifth child of Josiah Rees by his second marriage and an 'englyn' to Richard Rees; newspaper cuttings, including obituary notices of Josiah Rees, 1804, Mary Rees, his widow, 1829, Owen Rees of Gelligron, 1837, and Sarah Rees, daughter of Josiah Rees, 1851; copies of letters of Richard Rees, 1846; etc.
Amongst the references are those to the election and admission of Richard Rees for Morden College, Blackheath; the Smith family of Castellau, Glamorgan; the Penllergaer estate, Swansea; and the experiences of an emigrant to Australia, 1843.

Correspondence,

A group of sixteen letter books of Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, 1807-1813, 1825-1831, containing carbon copies of private and professional letters, the correspondents including his brothers Watkin Williams Wynn and Henry Watkin Williams Wynn, Robert Southey, Edward Herbert, 1st earl of Powis, Arthur Wellesley, 1st duke of Wellington, William Wyndham Grenville, baron Grenville, Sir Charles Grey, Lord Chief Justice of Bengal, Reginald Heber, bishop of Calcutta, and Daniel Corrie, bishop of Madras. Among the subjects of Welsh interest discussed are the parliamentary elections for Montgomeryshire and Flint, 1807, and the Montgomeryshire Local Militia.

Some forty-five letters, 1819-1840, to Edward Copleston , provost of Oriel College, Oxford, and bishop of Llandaf, together with a transcript of a letter, 1851, to his nephew W. J. Copleston. Many of the correspondents are prominent literary, ecclesiastical or political figures and include Henry Brougham (2) [1830s], Maria Edgeworth (1) 1831, Lord Grenville (3) 1827-1833, and Sir Walter Scott (1) 1829. An index of correspondents is contained on f. iii.

The correspondents include such public figures as Henry Brougham (5) 1827-1839, Lord Grenville (6) 1809-1827, Robert Peel (6) 1824-1841, and William Wilberforce (3) 1827-1828. Letters to Edward Copleston,

A volume in the hand of W. J. Copleston containing transcripts of, or extracts from, over sixty letters to Edward Copleston from various correspondents, 1814-1828, and from Edward Copleston, 1819-1828, mostly addressed to his father, relating mainly to Copleston's appointments as provost of Oriel College, Oxford, and as bishop of Llandaf. Correspondents include Lord Dudley (11) 1814-1827, Lord Grenville (3) 1814-1827, Sir Robert Peel (1) 1828 and Lord Liverpool (1) 1826. Originals of some have been published in W. J. Copleston, Memoir of Edward Copleston (London, 1851). Most of the letters from Lord Dudley have been published in Letters of the Earl of Dudley to the Bishop of Llandaff ed. Edward Copleston (London, 1840). Also included is a draft biography of Edward Copleston (ff. 71-90 verso inverted text), presumably compiled by W. J. Copleston in preparation for the Memoir.

A volume in the hand of W. J. Copleston containing transcripts of, or extracts from, sixteen letters from Edward Copleston to members of his family, 1804-1814, and one from Lord Grenville to Edward Copleston, 1809. They relate mainly to a tour of the continent undertaken by Copleston in 1814, and to events at Oxford University during the contest for the Chancellorship in 1809 and the 'Edinburgh Review controversy'. Some of the letters have been published in W. J. Copleston, Memoir of Edward Copleston (London, 1851).
