Private accounts of Thomas Morgan

Estate, household and personal accounts of Thomas Morgan, Prothonotary, of Rhiwbank, Berrriew, Montgomeryshire, comprising account books and bundles of loose bills and receipts, (Watermark 1810)- 1850. They record expenditure mainly for estate labour, servants’ wages, building work and furnishing at Rhiwbank, household provisions, ironmongery, personal expenses such as clothing and laundry, books, outings and entertainments, horticultural supplies, medicines for the household and animals, saddlery and harness, church and poor rates, charity payments to victims of various misfortunes, and subscriptions. The first file also includes items relating to James Morice of Wallog. Additional items of interest are noted in the file descriptions

Cases relating to properties in Cardiganshire, Merioneth and Montgomeryshire (misc.)

Papers from legal cases found in the Gogerddan estate records, where the main protagonists or the provenance are lacking, relating mainly to properties in Cardiganshire, Merioneth and Montgomeryshire, 1809x[1850]. Items of interest include the opposing claims of the Hughes family to the Trefan and Hafodgaregog estates, Merioneth, 1809; a dispute between Dr Rees Williams against Rees Jones concerning land at Morfa Swnd, Aberystwyth, 1825; and trespasses on Cors Fochno, 1835.

Gogerddan bargain books

Bargain books recording the names of individuals undertaking bargains [with Pryse Pryse] for the extraction of ore at specified locations on the Gogerddan estate, sometimes stating the numbers of labourers and equipment required, 1825-1851.

Cardigan poll books

Poll books for the elections of members of parliament to serve the town of Cardigan, 1729-1812, and Newcastle [Emlyn] votes [1841x1852] giving (variably) the names and abodes of the burgesses who voted, date of admittance, reference [in burgess register?], votes and observations

Deeds for land purchases by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn

Title deeds relating to farms and lands purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, situated mainly in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1582-1837. The properties include the Rhosfawr and Dyffryn estates, purchased in 1803, Pentrego, Maes-y-wern, Pen-y-coed, Main, Ceunant, etc., purchased 1806, Tyddyn y Cae Du in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1810, Allt Fawr purchased 1811, Peniarth Farm purchased 1812, Mathrafal or New Bridges in Llangynyw, and Gelly in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1813-1814. Among the former owners of the properties were Evan Meredith and his son David Evans of Mathrafal, the Phillips family of Pentrego, Humffreys (Humphreys) of Llwyn, Parry of Main and Penyvoil, Williams and Davies of Peniarth, Montgomeryshire, Richard Rocke of Trefnannu and Shrewsbury, Ann Jodrell of Ankerwyke, Buckinghamshire, William Mostyn Owen of Woodhouse and Thomas Owen Jones of Bishopsgate Street, London.
Many of the deeds are extremely complex and it may be necessary to search more than one file in the chronological sequence below, in order to trace all of the deeds relating to a single property.
Found with the deeds is the original schedule compiled in 1849, and a deed not listed in the schedule, 1853.

Miscellaneous personal papers of Thomas Morgan of Rhiwbank, Berriew, comprising probate records of Thomas Morgan and others for whom he acted as trustee or executor, 1779-1853; a small number of parish notices relating to Welshpool, 1822-1834; and personal letters and memoranda, 1834-1844.

Letters to Edward Loveden Loveden, Pryse Pryse and Pryse Loveden

Letters mainly to Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park, Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan and Woodstock, and Pryse Loveden, 1801-1853. Correspondents include the agents John Jones of Penybont and Aberystwyth, Thomas Johnes of Hafod, James Philipps Lloyd of Mabws, William Williams of Aberystwyth, other solicitors, bankers and mortgagees. Most files contain letters about the routine administration of the Gogerddan estates, including the survey of Abernantbychan, 1813-1814, and the drainage of Cors Fochno, 1813-1822. Many letters reflect the life of Pryse Pryse as MP for the Cardigan Broroughs and his influence in the county, 1820-1839, solicitation of his favour to obtain employment in the Excise Office, Post Office and elsewhere, the payment of mortgages and bills, subscriptions to various publications and charities, Pryse family news. horses, hunting and shooting. The letters of James Philipps Lloyd of Mabws, Herbert Evans of Highmead, Edward Crompton Lloyd Hall of Newcsatle Emlyn, and Rev. Griffith Thomas of Cardigan provide a rich source of information on local and national politics, the Church, Pryse Pryse’s personal friendships and the social scene of the Cardiganshire gentry in the first half of the nineteenth century. Specific individual files in this series concern the hardship case of Katherine Baily, 1821-1837, hunting on the Gogerddan estate, 1822-1833, and the custody battle for Mary Smith, daughter and heiress of Thomas Smith of Olmarch Ganol, Cardiganshire, 1828-1833. The later letters, 1840-1853, reflect the financial and legal matters which confronted Pryse Loveden after the death of his father and his candidature as the Liberal representative for the Cardigan borough

James Morse letters and papers

Letters and papers relating to James Morse, former post master of Cardigan, 1831-1855, disnissed from office and subsequently appointed stamp distributor at Carmarthen, for whom Pryse Pryse acted as surety and who defaulted to the Crown. There are three files, comprising letters by James Morse to Pryse Pryse with related papers, 1831-1847, letters and papers from the office of Hale, Boys and Austen (later Boys and Tweedie), 1834-1855, and further letters, 1847-1849. The correspondents include Pryse Pryse, Thomas Davies of Cardigan, John James Stacey of Carmarthen, Morris Thomas of Carmarthen, Posthumous Richard Philipps of Carmarthen, the Inland Revenue and the Board of Stamps and Taxes. The papers illustrate the career of James Morse, as well as his financial situation.and political interests. There are detailed insights into the political events of Cardiganshire, north Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire during the first half of the nineteenth century, referring to influential figures such as Sir John Owen and Lord Cawdor. They reveal Morse’s fervent support of Pryse Pryse, MP for the Cardigan boroughs, and his own comments on parliamentary affairs and government reform. The remaining letters and papers discuss the discharge of the payment owed by James Morse to the Crown, describing the insecure position of his mortgagee, represented by William Sackville Hamilton, and the attempts to gain indemnity for the co-sureties, Pryse Pryse and P.R. Philipps. Some of Thomas Davies’ letters also cover Abernantbychan estate business, county politics and the recommendation of Mr Lloyd, ironmonger, for the appointment of a gaoler [?at Cardigan]

Gogerddan weekly accounts

Numbered weekly accounts of the Gogerddan estate, 1851-1855, with two accounts current of John Graham Williams with Capt. Pryse, 1851 and 1855. The accounts show rents and arrears, money received for timber, payments to Capt. Pryse, rates and taxes, subscriptions to schools, coal and property repairs

Cardiganshire political and election letters

A small group of letters found with other Gogerddan political and election material, addressed to members of the Pryse family who were Members of Parliament for the Cardigan Boroughs, 1739-1855. The recipients are Thomas Pryse, 1739-1742, Pryse Pryse, 1808-1835, and Pryse Loveden, 1849-1855. Several of the letters are concerned with personal support or opposition towards the Pryse candidate, and they reveal the political rivalries of the Cardiganshire gentry families. Other letters discuss the payment of election expenses incurred in the contributing boroughs of Cardigan, Aberystwyth, Newcastle Emlyn and Lampeter, especially during 1852.
