Two volumes containing over one hundred and sixty holograph letters and postcards and fragments of letters from B[enjamin] Williams ('Gwynionydd') to D. Silvan Evans ('Hirlas'). The letters are addressed from a variety of places, such as Rhydlewis, Llanfihangel ar Arth, Llangeitho, Llangan, Trefilan, Cenarth, Newcastle Emlyn, Cwmdwr, Abergwennol, Llandovery, Llanddeusant, Penboyr, Pontlottyn and Llanover. The inclusive period of the letters is 1860-91 but the majority are dated within the years 1882-8. The main subjects of discussion are family bereavements and other news, South Cardiganshire pedigrees and biographies, the etymology of place and dialect names, institutions within the Established Church generally of interest to the writer, and day-to-day events and conditions of life and employment at Plas Llanofer. In addition there are copious references to other matters, such as the election of H[enry] Richard ('y dihyryn') for Merthyr [Tudful]; the recipient's edition of Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry; the writer's visits to North Pembrokeshire and South Cardiganshire parishes to examine registers; a proposed second edition of the writer's Enwogion Ceredigion; the writer's activities with the Archaeological Association; the writer's visits to Bronwydd, to St Davids, etc.; the discovery by the writer of an ogham stone at Llandygwydd; news of the family of David Owen ('Brutus'); a new lease of the writer's home at Wenallt, [in Troedyraur]; the library of D. Extensive material relating to Welsh bibliography accumulated by, and mainly in the hand of, D. Silvan Evans. It includes a volume entitled 'Bibliotheca Cambrensis. Llyfrofyddiaeth Cymru' ('A[u]ctore Dan. Silvano Evans, Cereticense') (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a holograph letter from the Reverend David Williams, Llanedy Rectory, 1868, giving the entry of baptism of John, son of John Walter, cleric and lexicographer, on 22 August 1721); a home-made notebook entitled 'Llyvryddiaeth Gymreig' (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a note in the hand of Benjamin Williams, ('Gwynionydd')); another home-made notebook entitled 'Emynau detholedig at Wasanaeth yr Eglwys. Rhag. 29, 1862', being a bibliography of Welsh hymnals and relevant source material; copious unbound leaves containing book titles (one of the titles is written on the dorse of a letter from M. A. Lewis, Tredegar Post Office, 1868, requesting the return of the writer's copy of 'Dr. J. D. Rees's Old Grammar'); and letters from John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to [Henri] Gaidoz, 1870 (publications not contained in Rowland's work [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry]), to D. Silvan Evans from W[illia]m Price, Llanffwyst, Abergavenny, 1869 (an addition to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry), [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys', Bangor, [18]78 (the title of Llyfer Plygain, 1618, transcribed by the writer from a volume examined at the Pengwern [Mostyn] sale in 1874), W[illiam] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), Machynlleth, 1862-4 (4) (additions and corrections to [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymru], with references to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), to [Jane] Davies, Penmaen, to W. F. Skene, etc., a request by a local printer to be allowed to print the recipient's edition of the works of [Walter Davies] Gwallter Mechain', the writer's removal from the manse to another house in Machynlleth and subsequently to Oswestry, the reported cataloguing of 'Llyfrfa Coleg Dewi' [the library of St. David's College, Lampeter], the illness and voyage to Australia of the writer's son), and from W[illiam] Spurrell, Carmarthen to [William] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') at Brynmawr, 1851-2 (2) (the writer's copy of Sion Dafydd Rhys's Welsh Grammar, biography of John Daniel, printer of Carmarthen). Some of the unbound titles are in the hand of Richard Williams (1835-1906), Celynog, Newtown and there is some later and additional material in the hand of J. H. Davies.

The original manuscript of 'Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry', 1546-1800, in the autograph of the Reverend William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), with additions and corrections by D. Silvan Evans, including a few contributions in the autograph of Richard Williams [then of Welshpool, afterwards of Celynog, Newtown], etc. A note in pencil indicates that pp. 10 and 333 are wanting; other pages have been cut into two or more pieces.

A group of ten notebooks in the hand of D. Silvan Evans, mainly either relating to his contributions to Encyclopaedia Cambrensis. Y Gwyddoniadur Cymreig (Denbigh, 1856-79) or comprising glossaries and texts on Welsh orthography. Among the titles are 'Gwyddoniadur. List of Articles Contributed', 1853-6; 'Chwanegion at y Gwyddoniadur' (with 'Gee's Statement, 1854, and a receipt from D. S. Evans, 16 February 1856); 'Attotiad i Fynegai y [Gw]yddoniadur Cymreig]; 'Arddygraff yr Iaith Gymraeg: ar Gynllun y Parch. D. Silvan Evans, 1853' (Argraffedig yn Ninbych, 1854') [sic] (on the cover: 'Proof received, Feb. 25, 1854. Llythyraeth yr Iaith Gymraeg: Cofrestr Egwyddorawl ar gynllun y Parch. D. Silvan Evans'); 'Rheithiadur Llythyraeth a Llafariaeth yr Iaith Gymraeg' ('Dechreuwyd Gorphenaf 26, 1850'); 'Adgofiedydd-Llythyraeth. Tach. 3, 1856'; 'Cyhydedd Geiriau Unsill y Gymraeg. The Quantity of Welsh Monosyllables' ('Argraffedig gan mwyaf, ond nid y cwbl oll, yn "Llythyraeth yr Iaith Gymraeg", Pen. IV (Caerfyrddin, 1861, 16 plyg)'; 'Henafion Cymreig - Geiriadur o Henafiaethau Cymreig'; 'Allan o "Gynghorion Priodor o Garedigion i Ddeiliaid ei Dyddynod" (Llundain, 1800, 8 plyg)' (a glossary based on the Welsh translation of Thomas Johnes, A Cardiganshire Landlord's Advice to his Tenants); 'Welsh Laws' (a glossary); etc.

A composite volume of poetry in strict and free metre by various poets including Mabclaf ab Llywarch, Aneirin Gwawdrwydd [sic], Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), [Robert Williams] 'Robert ab Gwilym Ddu', [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', [Griffith Williams] 'Gyttun Peris', [Richard Jones] 'Gwyndaf Eryri', [William Edwards] 'Gwilym Padarn', [Owen Williams] 'Owain Gwyrfai', [Evan Prichard] 'Ieuan Lleyn', [David Thomas] 'D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri', John Davies and Michael Prichard. The contents also include a list headed 'The Names of some of the most Ancient Bards and Historians and the Time wherein [sic] they Flourished'. The lettering on the spine reads 'Llyfr Ieuan Lleyn, 1799' and the volume, except for the last five folios, appears to have been written between 1799 and 1822. The last four folios are partly in the hand of D. Silvan Evans and the folio immediately preceding them is probably earlier in date than 1799 and may belong to Cwrtmawr MS 513B, Part II.

A volume in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans containing a list of 'Words occurring in the Welsh Bible which are not, and cannot become part of the language', and observations on words and expressions used in the Welsh Bible and in the Revised Version of the New Testament (1881).

A volume in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans (1818-1903) containing annotated extracts from manuscripts in the Llanover Collection, taken at Llanover during the period 1881-2; a vocabulary of the dialect of Lleyn; etc. Among the insets and pastedowns is a holograph letter from B[enjamin] Wil[liams] ['Gwynionydd'], Cwmdwr to [D. Silvan Evans], 1882 (a contribution by the writer to Yr Haul, personal).

Lists of books with prices, offered by D. Williams, London to the Reverend Robert Williams, Llangernyw and Conway. Most of the books are in Welsh or relate to Wales. There are notes, dated 1831-4, appended to three of the lists, relating to books available and books for which the addressee had enquired. A list of 212 Welsh books, published between 1802 and 1890, sent by [Charles Ashton] to [Daniel Silvan Evans], with a note appended (the above list contained all the books not purely theological out of about 600 books which the writer had recorded, he would like to see a copy of the 'Bardd Cwsg' edited by the addressee and also his note in Revue Celtique on Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry.).

A volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans described on the title-page as 'Lewis Morris's Additions to Dr Davies's Welsh-Latin Dictionary (from autographs) 1879. (The original Copy, once belonging to Lewis Morris, and annotated on by him, is now (1879) in the possession of the Rev. Thomas James, LLD, ['Llallawg'], Vicar of Netherthong, near Huddersfield)'. The scribe has added the following observations: 'The additions, it will be seen, are few, and very unimportant ..', and at the end has recorded the following entry: 'Returned the Copy of Dr Davies's Dictionary lent me by Llallawg, for transcribing the preceding notes, July 30, 1879'.

Eight letters, 1858 [?1859]-74, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil, seven of which are addressed to D. Silvan Evans and one to W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (copy). Accompanying one of the letters to D. Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.

Fourteen letters, 1887-99, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend Elias Owen, FSA, Efenechtyd Rectory, Ruthin and Llanyblodwel Vicarage, Oswestry (words and their meanings, folklore, etc.). Enclosed is one letter, [18]88, to Elias Owen from (the Reverend) M[organ] Hughes, Derwen Rectory, Corwen.

Thirty-one letters and two postcards, 1890-98, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend D[aniel] L[ewis] Lloyd, bishop of Bangor, writing from Brecon, Bangor, Llanarth and Eastbourne (church matters, Emyniadur yr Eglwys yng Nghymru, applicants for the curacy of Llanwrin, the writer's health, etc.). Enclosed are letters, 1896, to D. Silvan Evans from J. Jones, Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil, M. Morgan Jones, Llanrug, T. Williams, Llanystumdwy and John T. Evans, Llanelly (2), and to the bishop from John Williams, Llansamlet and D. Watcyn Morgan, Morriston. There are also two letters [1899] to D. Silvan Evans from D. R. (L.) Lloyd, Llanarth (the illness and death of the writer's father). The letters have been tentatively numbered - several are not fully dated.

Thirty nine letters, 1873-81, from Edward Breese, Morva Lodge, Portmadoc to D. Silvan Evans, largely concerning books and manuscripts. Reference to what the Council calls the 'revolt' of the staff at Aberystwith [sic], 1879.

Seventeen letters, 1888-93, to D. Silvan Evans from [the Reverend] T[homas] Briscoe, Holyhead mainly concerning points of translation (Biblical, the Apostles' Creed, etc.), with references also to the non-resident canonry offered to the addressee.

Nineteen letters, 1874-[89], to D. Silvan Evans from B. [i.e. Elizabeth] Johnes, afterwards Lady Hills-Johnes, Dolaucothy, Llandeilo (mention of the Bishop [? Connop Thirlwall], folk customs, requesting translations, literary matters, expressions of sympathy, etc.).
