A volume containing an alphabetical index compiled by W. W. E. Wynne of personal and place names in Peniarth MS 461 (Ancient Peniarth MSS 24 and 62), being a collection of letters and papers entitled 'Merioneth Collections' (not in NLW).

The manuscript is in two parts. The first contains an English poem entitled 'Faction Display'd', temp. Queen Anne; an account of the Vaughan family of Corsygedol mainly transcribed by Angharad Llwyd, with an original rental of the Corsygedol estate, 1637; a transcript by W. W. E. Wynne of Powell of Ednope's 'Pentarchia' from a manuscript at Brogyntyn, with a letter by the Rev. Robert Williams, Rhydycroesau. The second part comprises a booklet of extracts from a manuscript at Porkington (now Brogyntyn MS 14) in the hand of Lewis Anwyl relating to the families of Anwyl of Park and Owen of Porkington and Clenennau. Peniarth MS 440ii was published by W. W. E. Wynne in Montgomeryshire Collections Vol. IX (1876), pp. 357-64.

A collection of manuscripts, [12 cent.]-1909, from the library of Peniarth, Merionethshire, the core of the historic collection being that of the library accumulated at Hengwrt, Merionethshire, by Robert Vaughan during the seventeenth century. The collection includes many of the most important Welsh language manuscripts, including the Black Book of Carmarthen (Peniarth MS 1), the Book of Taliesin (Peniarth MS 2), the White Book of Rhydderch (Peniarth MSS 4-5) and Brut y Tywysogion (the Chronicle of the Princes) (Peniarth MS 20), as well as important manuscripts in other languages such as the Hengwrt Chaucer (Peniarth MS 392), the Law of Hywel Dda (Peniarth MS 28), Beunans Meriasek (Peniarth MS 105) and Bede's De natura rerum (Peniarth MS 540B).

A facsimile manuscript in two parts mostly in the hand of William Watkin Edward Wynne. The first part comprises copies (some printed) of charters, public records, deeds, pedigrees, poetry, etc. of Merionethshire and Caernarvonshire interest, some of which are taken from transcripts made by Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt. The material includes records and pedigrees relating to the Wynn family of Peniarth; notes on the Maurice and Owen families of Clenennau, Penmorfa, Caernarvonshire, with related deeds possibly in the hand of William Maurice of Llansilin; deeds relating to the Porkington estate; an extent of the commote of Eifionydd, 1352; an extract from the Coroner's Rolls for Merionethshire, 1345; charters of Castell y Bere and Harlech Castle; pedigrees of Madog ap Dafydd of Hendwr, Llandrillo, Merionethshire; an ode to Einion ap Gruffydd of Corsygedol by Gruffudd Gryg; odes to Dafydd ab Ieuan ab Einion by Guto'r Glyn and Dafydd Nanmor; letters addressed to W. W. E. Wynne, the correspondents including Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'); etc. The second part is also mostly in the hand of W. W. E. Wynne and again comprises material mainly of Merionethshire and Caernarvonshire interest, including pedigrees, correspondence, deeds, etc. relating to the Porkington estate and to the Maurice family and to the Wynne family of Glyn and Ystumcegid, Caernarvonshire; poetry relating to members of the Wynn family of Glyn by Huw Machno, Rhisiart Cynwal and others (one elegy translated into English); press cuttings taken from the Cambrian News, 1879; letters addressed to W. W. E. Wynne, the correspondents including Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') and Joseph Morris; etc.

The Elucidarium in English and Welsh; the Apostles' Creed; the Pater Noster, with commentary upon it translated into Welsh, and other religious texts; and a fragment of the White Book of Rhydderch containing triads, bonedd y saint, englynion and proverbs.

Transcripts from the Red Book of Hergest of Geoffrey's Historia, Bown of Haptwn and various poetry; glossaries for William Morgan's translations of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, William Salesbury's Mathew, Mark and Luke (1567), and for the Laws of Hywel Dda; a letter from William Mydleton to Dr John David Rhys (1582); and an account of the giants of Wales; also included are pedigrees, in several hands.
The main hands are those of Dr John David Rhys and William Middleton. Sections of the manuscript were written by clerks under the direction of Dr John David Rhys (see Gwenogvryn Evans, Report on Manuscripts in the Welsh Language, vol. I (London, 1898-1905), 718-726 for more details).

Pedigrees and heraldry mostly in the hand of William Llŷn, with entries also by Gruffudd Hiraethog (pp. 75-88, 219-32), Rhys Cain (pp. 154, 177-90, 210-2, 263-4, 284, 411-17) and Simwnt Fychan (pp. 191-2) and at least three unidentified scribes. There is also a table in the hand of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt (p. 418).

The manuscript is divided into two sections: the first comprises poetry taken from the Black Book of Carmarthen; the second comprises Rhandiredd; various indices; and the beginning of a Heraldic Dictionary.
The manuscript is in several hands: pp. 1-28 (part i) are in the hand of Roger Morys; pp. 1-45 (part ii) are in the hand of John Jones of Gellilyfdy; pp. 67-89 (part ii) are in the same hand as Peniarth MS 114; pp. 91-106 (part ii) are in the hand of Robert Vaughan; and pp. 107-8 (part ii) are in the hand of William Maurice of Llansilin.

Poetry of various poets of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries copied mostly by the Reverend David Ellis.
At the beginning of the manuscript there are seven poems of Rice Jones.

A modern transcript by Richard Thomas of Gossymdaith Llefoed Wynebclawr, Englynion yr Eryr, Englynion y Clyweid, Eiry mynydd, Cyvoessi Myrddin and others; and Englynion y Beddau from the book of Sir T. Williams, which was compared with a book by W. Salesbury of Llanrwst, 1776.
The first 54 pages contain the text, followed by 26 blank pages; after which there is a sketch of Isallt, near Penmorfa, which was the home of Dr Gruffudd Roberts in 1782.

Two documents relating to Corwen church: the first is an extract from the Red Book of St Asaph concerning the taxation of the church in 1291 and 1542, and certified by the bishop in 1597, the certificate having been issued at the request of Humphrey Ednevet, vicar of Corwen; the second document is dated 1542.

A collection of religious texts in the hand of John Jones, Gellilyfdy, including accounts of the Crucifixion and Trial; the Finding of the Cross; Yr Olew Bendigaid; Purdan Padrig; and Ymryson yr Enaid a'r Corff.
