Notes on natural philosophy and algebra written by S. T. Evans when he was a student at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1876-1877.

This file of letters, which came to light after the rest of the O. M. Edwards Papers had been catalogued, comprises detailed letters penned by Edwards while a student at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. They describe his surroundings, experiences and activities in some detail and give a vivid portrait of a student's life at Aberystwyth in the early 1880s.

Most of the letters, 1892-1916, are devoted to the writer's researches, writings and editing of Wales, Y Llenor, Heddyw and Cymru for which he solicits contributions from the pen of J. H. Davies. Several letters refer to the death of Thomas Edward Ellis in April 1899, the preparation of his biography and the erection of a memorial statue at Bala. Others relate to J. H. Davies's application for the position of Registrar of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and some to Edwards's duties as Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales.

Student notes on petrology, 1903; university lectures and notes for lectures given at Aberystwyth and Manchester, 1919-[1930], and at Cambridge, 1931-1938; other lectures and addresses on geological subjects, 1925-1939; material relating to academic and consultative research, undertaken mainy in Wales, 1884-[1942], including material relating to the mineral mining industries and river drainage in Mid Wales; files of personal papers and correspondence, 1913-1943; copies of letters to his wife, 1909-1966; pocket notebooks, [1920s]-[1930s]; theses and papers by other individuals, 1931-1943; photographs and slides, [c. 1903]-[1949]; portfolios containing plans, sections, maps and graphs relating to mines, collieries and power stations in Wales and England, [c. 1871]-1935; miscellaneous papers and research notes, 1904-1966.

The series comprises a letterbook containing copies of letters written by O.M. Edwards to various members of his family including his parents and brothers. They were all written whilst he was a student at Aberystwyth. Some of the letters are lengthy and describe in detail events at the college and locally at Aberystwyth. They also contain references to Llanuwchllyn and to members of the Edwards family.

The series contains letters written by O.M. Edwards to his parents Owen and Elizabeth Edwards discussing in some detail his experiences as a student at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and at Balliol College, Oxford, his travels on the Continent, and his life as an Oxford don. Many of the letters contain references to events at Llanuwchllyn and to family life.

The series comprises letters to his cousin Ifan T. Davies, 1885-1887, his associate D. H. Williams, 1911-1919, and various individuals, 1884-1920. These are stray letters with little or no connection between them.

Papers, correspondence and printed items, 1872-1926, relating to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. They include copies of the college's early registers, 1872-1877, copies of the conveyance of the college and its hereditaments, 1875, copies of the deed of settlement of the college, and of the charter of incorporation and statutes, both dated 1892, papers concerning the administration of the college's restoration fund, the revised constitution of the college, and the old students' scholarship fund. Other matters include the charter of the federal University of Wales in 1893, the college's building fund, Alexandra Hall, the finance and general purposes committee, the estate of Sir John Williams, the proposed revision of the college's charter and statutes, and museum grants for Wales. The correspondents include Thomas Charles Edwards (3), 1885-1886, Lewis Morris, 1886, and Stuart Rendel, 1889.

A large collection of newspaper cuttings relating to Goronwy Rees's resignation as Principal of the University College of Wales Aberystwyth and a report on the subject at the time by Mervyn Jones. There is also a typescript copy of the article "Who is the Principal?" for Y Faner.

Papers of Prof. Richard Aaron, 1904-1981, comprising drafts of Knowing and the Function of Reason (Oxford, 1971), and of 'Comte, Mill and Durkheim: the epistemological issues', [?1970s]; reviews of Aaron's published works and related material, 1936-1972; draft lectures, articles and teaching notes, 1956-1977; personal and family papers, 1904-1977; personal and academic correspondence, 1932-1976; correspondence relating to the resignation of Goronwy Rees as Principal of UCW, Aberystwyth, 1956; minutes, correspondence and papers relating to the Central Advisory Council for Education (Wales), 1946-1951, the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire, 1958-1963, and the BBC General Advisory Council, 1963-1971; discussion papers for meetings of the British Academy, 1980-1981; and papers relating to Welsh-medium higher education, 1955-1975. With the exception of Knowing and the Function of Reason, there appear to be no papers relating to his books.

Miscellaneous typescripts, c. 1900-1920, on a very wide range of subjects, including a number of copies of references and testimonials. They include material relating to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, the National Library of Wales, the Ancient Monuments Board for Wales, the League of Nations Union, and many items of Cardiganshire interest. The events covered in the various typescripts date back to 1753.

The series comprises notes and items assembled by Sir Ifan whilst at school or university, including school reports from Oxford High School, Oxford Preparatory School and Bala County School.

Papers, correspondence, printed matter and press cuttings, 1932-1999, accumulated by Sir Goronwy Daniel during the course of his life and career, and reflecting his many professional commitments and leisure interests. Many derive from his period as Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1969 until 1979.

The letters, 1897-1924, discuss the work of the Guild of Graduates of the University of Wales, especially its Literature Section, the publication of Gweithiau Morgan Llwyd o Wynedd, and the work of re-printing the Welsh classics by the Guild. There are also references to the internal politics of the University of Wales and the colleges at Aberystwyth and Bangor and to other appointments in which Sir John Edward Lloyd had an interest.

The letters, 1895-1925, discuss Welsh political life, the attempts to regenerate Mudiad Cymru Fydd, historical records relating to Flintshire, the foundation of the National Library of Wales, its location at Aberystwyth, and appeals for increased government funding and the passage of the copyright legislation, developments at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the federal University of Wales, the possibility of establishing a Public Record Office for Wales, and the selection of Liberal candidates in Welsh constituencies for the 'Coupon' General Election of December 1918.

Most of the letters, 1897-1925, are relatively short notes, arranging meetings, giving items of news and requesting pieces of information for the author's researches. There are many references to Welsh books and manuscripts, and occasional, passing references to contemporary national and political events. There is also some discussion of the development of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, the University of Wales, and the establishment and early growth of the National Library of Wales. There are several interesting references to the selection of the venue for the National Library and the eventual choice of Aberystwyth and to the appointment of the Library's officers. Sir John also occasionally refers to the early history of the National Museum, founded at Cardiff in the early twentieth century. During 1908 and 1909 there are letters referring to meetings with D. Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, and John Herbert Lewis, relating to attempts to wrest improved funding for the National Library from the Liberal government.

A holograph essay on 'Welsh Social Life as reflected in the Poems of Lewis Glyn Cothi' by 'Llynor' [E. Stanton Roberts]. The work was submitted for, and awarded, the T. E. Ellis Essay Prize at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, during the Session 1909-1910.
