Biographical history

Sir Samuel Thomas Evans (1859-1918), politician and judge, was born at Skewen, Glamorganshire, the only son of John and Margaret Evans, from Cardiganshire. He qualified as a solicitor, 1883. He served on the town council in Neath. From his election in 1890 to 1910 he was Liberal M.P. for Mid-Glamorgan. In 1891 he was called to the Bar, becoming a QC in 1901. He was made recorder of Swansea and Solicitor-General in 1908 and was President of the Divorce, Probate and Admiralty Division of the High Court 1910-1918. It was while presiding over the Prize Court during the First World War that he established himself as an authority on international law. He received an Honorary Ll.D in 1909, of the University of Wales, and was made a freeman of Swansea and Neath. He married Rachel Rees Thomas in 1887. He died on 13th September 1918 and was buried at Skewen.
