Catalogue of Welsh ballads,

An interleaved volume (385 pp.) belonging to J. H. Davies made up of pages from Y Traethodydd, 1886-92 ('Hen Gerddi y Cymry', a catalogue of Welsh ballads compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with pages 346-50 from Revue Celtique, II (part of a supplement [by D. Silvan Evans] to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry). There are numerous additions and annotations by J. H. Davies, including cross-references to his own Bibliography of Welsh ballads printed in the 18th century (London, 1911) and an index to the authors, etc. of the pre-1800 ballads in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue. The numbers used in the index correspond to the numbers in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue while the page references are to the pages in the present volume. Loose inside are a list of ballads, etc. by Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant'), Hugh Jones, Llangwm and Ellis Roberts, with number or page references as before, and a letter, 1908, from D. Rhys Phillips, Swansea to [J. H. Davies] (jottings on three Shrewsbury 'effusions').

A group of ten notebooks in the hand of D. Silvan Evans, mainly either relating to his contributions to Encyclopaedia Cambrensis. Y Gwyddoniadur Cymreig (Denbigh, 1856-79) or comprising glossaries and texts on Welsh orthography. Among the titles are 'Gwyddoniadur. List of Articles Contributed', 1853-6; 'Chwanegion at y Gwyddoniadur' (with 'Gee's Statement, 1854, and a receipt from D. S. Evans, 16 February 1856); 'Attotiad i Fynegai y [Gw]yddoniadur Cymreig]; 'Arddygraff yr Iaith Gymraeg: ar Gynllun y Parch. D. Silvan Evans, 1853' (Argraffedig yn Ninbych, 1854') [sic] (on the cover: 'Proof received, Feb. 25, 1854. Llythyraeth yr Iaith Gymraeg: Cofrestr Egwyddorawl ar gynllun y Parch. D. Manion Cof A Chadw, I-III,

(With 321-322C). One of three composite volumes largely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing copious transcripts of prose and poetry texts and extracts from several manuscripts in the Llanover collection, e.g. 'Dafydd ab Gwilym', 'Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug', 'Pennillion diarhebol Iolo Morganwg', 'Pennillion Serch Gwasgar Iolo Morganwg', 'Dyriau Gwasgar', 'Darnau Defnyddion Doethineb Teuluaidd', 'Gwersi Doethineb', 'Gwasgaredd Doethineb', 'Silurian Phrases' 'Cyngor i Feirdd a Dysgedigion Cymru', 'Ffermyddiaeth', 'Arferion Morganwg', 'Trioedd y Llafurwr', 'Tywyddolion', etc. The transcripts of manuscripts at Llanover were made during the period 1880-2 but some annotations by the scribe are dated to 1892. According to a note at the end of the transcript, one transcript by H[ugh[ B[rython] H[ughes] was sent for publication in Yr Haul in 1874 (see Yr Haul, 1874, pp. 427-8). A note on page 406 refers to a transcript made by Thomas Miles ('Gwas Arglwyddes Llanover') for D. Silvan Evans in September 1882. The spine of each volume is lettered 'Manion Cof a Chadw', with the appropriate volume number.

Silvan Evans: Gwaith Gwallter Mechain (Carmarthen and London, 1868), vol. III pp. 569-76); 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam (Gwilym) Lleyn ('Allan o Lawysgrifau Ieuan Lleyn - 1799'), transcribed at Llangïan, May 1854, with collations and annotations dated to 1856; 'Gwaith Beirdd Cymru. Emynau Ieuan Lleyn ac eraill,

A small notebook containing hymn stanzas partly in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans and partly in another hand [? that of John Henry (Silvan) Evans, son of D. Silvan Evans]. The hymns attributed to [Evan Pritchard] 'Ieuan Lleyn' are 'Nesau mae'r dydd - O ddedwydd wawr!' and 'Gweithredoedd Rhagluniaeth' ('Mor amlwg rhyfeddol weithredoedd ....'); in the case of the remainder the author's name is not given.

Descriptions of Llanover manuscripts,

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing descriptive observations on, and some extracts from, manuscripts of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') at Llanover Court, Monmouthshire (now in the National Library of Wales, NLW MSS 13061-184). At the beginning of the volume is an index in the hand of J. H. Davies. Inset, in the hand of D. Silvan Evans, is a list of some Llanover manuscripts said to have been examined in some detail ('gyda rhyw faint o fanylder'), 21-26 June 1875.

Attodiad i 'Lyfryddiaeth y Cymry' ...,

An exercise book in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Attodiad i 'Lyfryddiaeth y Cymry', Gan Olygydd y gwaith hwnw', being a supplement to William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') (ed. D. Silvan Evans): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869). Among the insets are letters to D. Silvan Evans from E. R. G. Salisbury, Glan-Aber, Chester, 1870-1 (2), and the Reverend D. R. Thomas, St Mary's, Cefn, St Asaph, undated, a bibliographical note in the hand of J. Peter ['Ioan Pedr'], Bala, and copious printed cuttings of book titles.

Penillion, etc.,

A composite manuscript in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Penillion', numbered 83-93, being a continuation of the series ending on page 111 of Ysten Sioned (Aberystwyth, 1882), and inscribed 'sent off to 89 (inclusive) Dec. 4, 1883' (no. 93 taken from the Oswestry Advertizer, 29 November 1882), together with one additional unnumbered stanza ('The two last line [sic] by D. S. E.'); some Welsh dictionary material, in the form of 'cywydd' couplets and other quotations, illustrating the use of words beginning mainly with the letter C ; and transcripts of free metre poetry by Dafydd o'r Nant and Syr Huw Dafydd ('O Gelli Gaer').

Eighteen letters to D. Silvan Evans, seventeen of which, 1870-98, are from T[homas] C[harles] Edwards, Liverpool, Aberystwyth and Bala (bibliographical and lexicographical matters, matters in connection with the University College, Aberystwyth, the writer's paper on Salesbury, Dr Lewis Edwards's translation of Cowper's hymn 'God moves in a mysterious way') and one, [18]76, from E. P[enllyn] Jones, University College, Aberystwyth. The last three letters from T. C. Edwards are in another hand except for the signature.

Seventeen letters, 1859-79, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend Robert Williams (1810-81), sixteen of which are written from Rhydycroesau (rectory), Oswestry and one from Culmington Rectory, Bromfield (the writer's Cornish dictionary, advice, words and their meanings, re translations for Mr Skene, 'these English Bishops', the 'Celtic Remains', the 'Greal', etc., the death of Henry Parry, r[ector] of Bylchau (mention of his father's library), interest in the addressee's preferment, he has been making a catalogue of the books in St Asaph cathedral library, reference to the death of Professor Evander Evans and Professor Ebel, the slowness of so many of his subscribers to pay, the writer's health, sympathy, his removal to Culmington).
