Purchased estate (1748)

The estate comprises property in p's Wrexham, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, ?Llangwyfan, [Llansilin] (t. Sycharth), and [Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant] (t. Cefn-coch), all in co. Denb., and in p. Wills, letters of administration and other documents associated with probate belonging to the familes of Vaughan of Llwydiarth and Llangedwyn, 1584-1718, a further copy of Edward Vaughan’s will, 1717-1718; Thelwall of Plas y Ward, 1599-1733; and Kyffin of Glascoed, 1633-[c. 1653].

Probate records of several members of the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, comprising mainly copies, abstracts and transcripts of the wills of Sir John Wynn and Sir William Williams, 1710-1735; Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 1840-1876; Grenville Watkin Williams Wynn, 1865-1924; and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and Dowager Lady Williams Wynn, 1884-1905.

Plas-y-ward estate

The estate originally comprised property p's Llanynys (t's Maesmaencymro, Gyffeilliog), Llanfwrog (t. Bodangharad), Ruthin, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Bodfari (t. Aberchwiler), Llandyrnog, Llanhychan, Llangwm in commote of Dinmael, the lordship of Llwynydd and Rhisgog, all in co. Denb. In 1697, property in p's Derwen, Llanelidan and Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, co. Denb., and p. Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (t's Garthiaen, Branas Isaf), co. Mer., is added. In 1701, property in p's Penmorfa, Beddgelert, Dolwyddelan, Capel Curig, Penmachno, Llanberis, Dwygyfylchi and Llanfairfechan, co. Caern., is also added. Sir William Williams bought the Glantant estate in 1679, and it appears in the Glascoed collection in 1680. The Plas-y-ward estate is combined with the Glascoed collection, 1704-1715 (R12-R13). From 1712 (R13) property in p. Llanynys (t's Trefechan, Ysgeibion) and [p. Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch] (t. Pentrellech) is added. RA8 (1653) contains property in p. Oswestry (t's Trefonnen, Treflach), Shropshire. R4/8 contains an inventory of the goods and chattels of Edward Thelwall of Plasyward, co. Denb., esq., appraised in Jan. 1677. Penegoes, title deeds,

Penbedw estate, title deeds,

Title deeds which appear to have been originally filed together, described on an accompanying slip as ‘Old writeings relating to Penbedw estate purchased by Richard Williams Esq.’ The series relates to properties of the Penbedw estate near Nannerch, now in Flintshire but previously in Denbighshire, belonging to John Hughes. The purchase deed to Richard Williams appears to be missing. The files describe the capital messuage and other properties in the township of Penbedw, 1546-1674, and lands in Caerwys and Hendregaerwys, 1582-1681.

An original pedigree roll showing the descent of Vychan and Herbert, [pre-1580] and four volumes of pedigrees and relevant notes copied from manuscript and printed sources relating to Protheroe, [1830-1835]; descents from the fifteen tribes of Wales, [c. 1835]-[post-1856]; "Ynysmaengwyn and Gwydir", [1851x1883]; and Shropshire families [post-1863].

Particulars and rentals of parts of the Wynnstay estate, the first watermarked 1857 and the last tentatively dated post-1882, listing estates in Denbighshire purchased by the late Sir Watkin Williams Wynn [fifth Baronet] subsequent to his marriage settlement of 1817 and devised by his will to trustees to uses, other entailed estates, and chief, fee farm and other rents.

Pardons by Elizabeth I, James I, Charles I, Charles II, and the peers who had jurisdiction in the lordships of Oswestry and Ruthin, issued to David Lloit ap M’ed, Edward Eyton and Gruffith Kyffin, 1458-1626; to Richard Wynn and various other individuals in Caernarfonshire, 1604-1690; to members of the Thelwall family of Plas y Ward, 1486-1626; and to the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth, 1584, [1625x1649].

Papers relating to Wynnstay lawsuits

Papers from the office of Longueville and Co., drawn up in the preparation of lawsuits mainly involving members of the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, [c. 1817]-1904. The most substantial of these is a case brought by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn against Robert Edwards of Gronwen, Oswestry, and Thomas Roberts, concerning trespass and a dispute over land at Moelfre Pool in the manor of Cynllaith Owain, 1883-1884. Others include an alleged case of trepass by Richard Tyrwhitt on lands in Llansanffraid Glynceiriog and Llandysilio, Denbighshire, [c. 1817]-1820; the recovery of royalties from William Farr of Plas Llysyn, Montgomeryshire, 1833-1839; possession of a cottage at Commins Coch, Cemais, Montgomeryshire, 1873-1878; and several separate cases relating to tenancy and arrears of rent, 1874-1904. The files typically include cases and counsels’ opinions, notices, the complaint or statement of claim, court summons, affidavits, court orders, attorneys’ bills of costs, correspondence, counterparts and copies of relevant deeds, and maps and plans.

Papers relating to roads,

Papers relating to roads in which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn had an interest, both as a private landowner and as an investor in the turnpike trusts. The contents are not concerned with the construction or physical maintenance of the roads, but rather with financial and legal aspects. The files relate to securities of the turnpike trusts in Montgomeryshire, Denbighshire, Shropshire and Merioneth, 1770-1885; the diversion of a road near Gartheryr, Banhadla, 1823; and the stoppage or closure of footpaths and roads in Ruabon, 1867-1910.

Papers relating to railways,

Papers relating to railways mainly in Shropshire, Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire, in which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn had an interest as a landowner, shareholder or director. They comprise printed Acts of Parliament and applications for Acts, conveyances, reports, circulars and letters concerning the construction and funding of the Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Chester Junction Railway, 1845-1854; Llanidloes and Newtown Railway Company 1853-1857; Manchester, Liverpool, Swansea and Milford Haven Junction Railway (Mid Wales Section), 1858; Oswestry and Newtown Railway Company, 1858-1859; The Vale of Llangollen Railway Company and Ruabon railways, 1858-1865; and the Conway and Llanrwst Railway, [c. 1860].
