The Tutelar of the Place

The series comprises five files of manuscript and typescript drafts of the poem, galley proofs of Poetry, 1961, and material relating to a BBC radio broadcast of 'work in progress' in 1956.

The Viae

The file comprises a manuscript draft of 'The Viae' which was broadcast on the Third programme on 22nd November 1955, with an incomplete typescript copy. -- See also CF1/7.

Title, map and dedication

The file comprises carbon typescripts of the title pages and dedication with some revision, 1937, a later typescript version of the dedication, a colourful manuscript map of the trenches, and an index to the typesetting signs used by David Jones. There is a note on f. 1 by René Hague referring to the numbering of the Notes.

Tutelar of the Place / Anathemata

The file comprises a piece of the dust jacket of The Anathemata describing the book; the first page of a review of Epoch and Artist entitled 'David Jones on Art and Religion' by Kenelm Foster in Blackfriars; a copy of Agenda, March-April 1963 which includes 'The Tutelar of the Place'; and the programme of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and The National Institute of Arts and Letters ceremony in New York, May 26 1954, recording the presententation of the Loines Award for poetry to David Jones.

Two Ballades

The file comprises a manuscript copy in David Jones's hand of a poem identified by Harman Grisewood as being a ballade by Hilaire Belloc, together with a draft letter to Bobby [Speaight], dated 19 May 1955, containing part of 'The Ballade of the Great British Public'. ('I append the few lines that I can now recall. I can recall better Fr John O'Connors contented expression as he recited it in his Heaton presbytery'). Neither of these poems appear to have been published.

Typed addenda

The file includes some additions and corrections collected by René Hague to his Commentary with letters to him discussing the book from Nancy Sandars, 1978, William Blissett (3), 1975-1977, Walter Shewring and others. There are also copies of obituaries to David Jones by Peter Levi, Nigel Abercrombie, and Tom Burns, and a piece of the cover of The Anathemata.
