Biographical history

'The Tutelar of the Place' first appeared in Poetry, XCVII, No. 4, (Chicago), January 1961, and was awarded the Levison Prize. It then appeared in Agenda, Vol. 2, Nos. 11-12 (March-April 1963), and was reprinted in the David Jones Special Issue of Agenda, Vol. 5, Nos. 1-3 (Spring-Summer, 1967). David Jones has dated the poem on page 64 'c. 1960 incorporating passages written earlier'.
