A child's exercise-book bearing the name 'Tom Ellis'.

A letter, 1857, from Evan Evans, Pant, Southbend, Minesota [sic], written in Welsh to an unnamed friend (the beginning of the Welsh settlement at Southbend, reference to various persons in, and from, Cardiganshire) (a transcript of this letter has been made), and letters to Principal J. H. Davies from W. J. Hemp, Ancient Monuments Board for Wales, 1926 (1) (notice of a meeting, with enclosure), Herbert Johnes Lloyd, Croydon Rectory, Royston, 1923-4 (2) (mention of an evening at Cwm and of various books) and Percy E. Watkins and Jenkin James, W.E.A.: Welsh District, Cardiff, 1924 (1) (the addressee's subscription to the W.E.A.).

A few loose sheets in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing material to be found in Enwau Lleoedd Sir Gaernarfon: eu hystyr a'u hanes (Caernarfon, 1913) and Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon (Caernarfon, 1922). There is also a printed order form for Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon, issued while 'Myrddin Fardd' was still alive.

'Periglor Wakefield', a Welsh translation by 'Edeyrn Dafod Aur' [probably the Reverend J. Myrddin Thomas (1838-1914), Mold] for the Wrexham Eisteddfod, 1876, of The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith. With the translation is a letter, 1876, from 'Edeyrn Davod Aur' to the adjudicator. Also included are some sheets of a draft copy with poetry, extracts transcribed in another hand from Y Gwyliedydd, 1829-30, and a fragment in yet another hand referring to the discovery of an urnfield in the parish of Llanfachraith [sic, Merionethshire], 1875.

A copy of Appendix to Report from the Select Committee on the Woods, Forests, and Land Revenues of the Crown (ordered ... to be printed 25 July 1848) [Ref. 538 - II] with Index to Report, Evidence, and Appendix [538 - III]. Pages 1-157 have been annotated and used as copy for Appendix (A) to the Second Report (ordered ... to be printed 27 July 1849) [574].

A composite volume which belonged to Archdeacon Henry Thomas Payne (1759-1832) containing the following printed works: (1) interleaved copy (title-page and preface wanting) of [A History of the island of Anglesey, ... to which are also added, memoirs of Owen Glendowr (London, 1775)], with some manuscript additions by Payne including 'Account of Parys Mountain, & the Copper Works in 1796'; (2) Evan Evans, Some specimens of the poetry of the antient Welsh bards, translated into English, with explanatory notes on the historical passages (London, [1764]), with the following manuscript note by Payne: 'This Copy was given to the Rev. Thomas Payne, late Rector of Llangattock in Brecknockshire, & Canon Residentiary of the Cathedral Church of Wells, by the author, who was then Curate of Llanvihangel Cilcornel [sic], in Monmouthshire - The Corrections are in the Authors own hand writing,' and also a printed list of '[Ad]denda et corrigenda' (insert); (3) George Richards, fellow of Oriel College, The Aboriginal Britons, a prize poem, ... second edition (Oxford, 1791); (4) [Alexander Geddes], Epistola macaronica ad fratrem ... (Londini: apud J. Johnson, 1790); (5) [Thomas Warton] Specimen of a history of Oxfordshire, second edition, corrected and enlarged (London, J. Nichols, etc., 1783); and (6) Robert [Clayton], bishop of Clogher, A Journal from Grand Cairo to Mount Sinai and back again. Translated from a manuscript ... (London, 1753). There is a brief list of contents in the autograph of Henry Thomas Payne.

Letters and papers relating to the Reverend Peter Williams (1723-96), including two holograph letters, 19 May 1789 and 27 June 1789, fom Peter Williams writing from Carmarthen and Gelly to his son, the Reverend Eliezer Williams at Lord Galloway's, Galloway House, Scotland; a holograph sermon in Welsh by Peter Williams on Isa. 63, 4; other holograph items consisting of verses headed 'Antichristian Tradition' and (?) part of a poem entitled 'Babilon's fall', part of a draft of a letter to Mr Jones of Llan Gan, a draft of a letter concerning bull-baiting, a draft of a letter [?1777] to [Lady Huntingdon], and drafts of a letter to [ ] praying that a day of humiliation be appointed and of a letter to an unnamed person inviting him to subscribe to the writer's edition of Cann's Bible; a letter, 1834, from William Jones, [Llan Engan], to an unnamed person containing references to the persecution and excommunication of Peter Williams; a notebook in the autograph of Peter Bailey Williams containing a 'Copy of a Letter from the late Reverend Peter Williams to the Methodist Association about 1793', a letter (copy) from [Peter Williams] 'to the Revd Mr Jones of Llan Gann. Glam:', writings by Peter Williams on the Trinity including one 'To the Leaders of the Welsh Methodists on the Trinity: or rather the author of a Pamphlet on that subject', and two other letters from Peter Williams to the Association, one in Welsh, the other in English, etc.; letters to J. H. Davies concerning Peter Williams from Rich[ar]d Bennett, Caersws, 1923-4 and undated (3, one incomplete), Tom Beynon, Caerau n[ea]r Bridgend, 1921, with copy of reply, Evan W[illia]m Edwards, Llandyfeilog, 1921, Francis Green, St David's 1922-4 (2), M. Unrelated items include letters to J. H. Davies from F. W. Bussell, Wimbledon, 1921, A. J. C. Guimaraens, London, 1924, John T. Jôb, Abergwaun, 1924, and Walter Spurrell, Carmarthen, 1915, a letter, undated, from Eluned [Morgan], Cardiff to an unnamed correspondent, and a letter, [19]17 from Rich[ar]d T. Greer, Llanbadarn, to [ ] Vaughan. There is also a press-cutting concerning Dafydd Jones o Drefriw.

A volume containing 'A Compend of Rhetoric in two parts, 1756'. The spine is lettered 'Watsons Rhetoric' [most probably Robert Watson (1730?-1781), historian and rhetorician].

'Ode to Charity', a translation into English [by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd')] of the 'awdl' on the subject 'Elusengarwch' by David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion'). The translator's name is not given but a note at the top of the first page reads 'Rec'd a Sovereign from J. Maughan Esqr. for Translating this'. There are some notes and emendations in pencil in another hand. On the last page, following the translation, are thirty-eight lines of an elegy in Welsh, (?) incomplete, on the death of [Frederick, Duke of York]. Pasted in at the beginning is a press cutting headed 'Darlith i'r Saeson. Araeth Mr Lloyd George. Bywyd a Barddoniaeth Cymru' giving an account of an address Lloyd George gave as chairman of a concert at Llanystumdwy.

A volume described on the title-page as 'Arfau Bonedd. John Jones Myrddin Fardd Llanystumdwy 1874' containing the coats of arms of various persons and families mainly from Llŷn and Eifionydd, Caernarfonshire, many of them illustrated in colour, others in the form of bookplates. The sources include tombstones and other monuments and the volume is in part complementary to Gleanings from God's Acre (Pwllheli, 1903). There are also a few loose papers, chiefly bookplates, and a letter, year not given, to 'Myrddin Fardd' from (Col.) John (?) F. Owen, Penmaen, Pwllheli (a genealogical query). A list of contents has been compiled and inserted with the manuscript.

A jotter containing short notices by J. H. Davies on 'Llwynrhys', 'Guild of Graduates of the University of Wales' [i.e. Reprints of Welsh Manuscripts] and [Robert Roberts, ('Y Sgolor Mawr')], the last in pencil. Also included are a list of (?) farm names and a printed Appeal for funds to provide a National Memorial to the Reverend Principal Thomas Charles Edwards.

A composite volume containing a copy (title-page wanting) of [Walter Davies, Rhyddid: traethawd a ennillodd ariandlws Cymdeithas y Gwyneddigion ar ei thestun i eisteddfod Llanelwy ... 1790 (Llundain, 1791)] and also Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol (88 pp., Aaron - Barnu) [?1801], the original Part I (later withdrawn) of the work expanded by Thomas Charles and issued as Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol ... y llyfr cyntaf (1805). At the end of the volume are wrappers of [George Lewis], Esponiad ar y Testament Newydd, Rhif 1. (Caerlleon, [1800]) containing an advertisement for the Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol, and there is also a cutting from Y Goleuad, [4 Chwef. 1871] containing a long letter from Morris Davies on the subject of 'Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol John Roberts a Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol Charles'. At the beginning of the volume are (?) wrappers of Esponiad ar y Testament Newydd, Rhifyn XVII (Gwrecsam: Ioan Painter), with part of a sermon in manuscript, and Rhifyn XX (Bala, R. Saunderson), each with a list of books published by [Dr] G[eorge] Lewis. A note in the autograph of 'Morris Davies, Portmadoc' occurs on the first page of the Geirlyfr Ysgrythyrol.

A composite volume lettered on the spine 'Church-Rates' and bearing the name of 'Wm Thomas, Bwlchnewydd 1860' [i.e. the Reverend William Thomas (1823-99), Congregational minister first at Capel Isaac then at Bwlchnewydd and Elim, Carmarthenshire, afterwards living at Parc-glas near Carmarthen]. It contains a number of printed items, viz. four tracts of the British Anti-state-church Association, New Series, Nos. 1, 5, 4 and 6 (1850-51); three publications of the Society for the Liberation of Religion from State-Patronage and Control (The New Burial Acts, as they affect Dissenters ..., fourth edition, enlarged [1857], Practical Directions to the Opponents of Church-Rates, Part I, third edition [?1857], and Illegal Church-Rates: being practical directions to the opponents of church rates, Part II [1856]); 'Y Dreth Eglwys yn mhlwyf Cynwyl Gaio' by 'Ap Gryphydh', i.e. W[illia]m Thomas, Bwlchnewydd, reprinted from Y Diwygiwr, 1857, pp. 377-80, with some marginal notes by William Thomas; Y Bugail; neu flaidd yn rhith dafad ... gan awdwr y "Whigs a'r Tories", &c. Y trydydd argraffiad (Caernarfon, Josiah Thomas Jones, 1835); Y Parchedig Gecryn Penchwiban; neu ddrych y bugail drwg ...gan awdwr y 'Whigs a'r Tories', y 'Bugail', &c. (Caernarfon, argraffwyd dros yr awdwr, gan Josiah Thomas Jones); Mihangel's Valentine for the 'Old Mother' in Carmarthen; or Carmarthen brought to tune [1854]; and three items of verse ('Cwyn yr Offeiriad', 'Hanes y Tories' by 'Clochydd Glas', and 'Cyffes yr Offeiriad'), all three described by William Thomas as having been composed by the Reverend W. Davies, PhD, Froodvale, the original manuscript of each being in the possession of William Thomas. At the beginning of the volume, in manuscript, are a note of 'The position of the Church Rate Question in the H. Cns. from 1853 to 1861 inclusive' and 'A List of the Pamphlets the volume contains ...', and at the end of the volume, also in manuscript, by William Thomas, are 'Extracts & Notes. Braintree Church Rate Case' and 'Notes & correspondence on the Church Rate in the Parish of Cayo'. Loose in the volume is an incomplete copy of Y Parchedig Gecryn Penchwiban.

A small notebook which belonged to J. H. Davies containing bibliographical references to the Reverend Peter Williams, mainly from William Rowlands (Gwilym Lleyn) (ed. D. Silvan Evans), Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), together with a few biographical notes. At the reverse end of the volume are a few notes relating to (?) Cardiganshire Highways Committee and some observations on Sir Owen M. Edwards, perhaps for an article or an address.

An indexed account-book, 1794-1800, relating, it seems, to the third edition of 'Beibl Peter Williams'. Many of the entries to about the middle of May 1796 appear to be in the autograph of the Reverend Peter Williams (1723-96) while some of the entries from about 1794 are by the Reverend Peter Bailey Williams. The first page of the index appears to be wanting.

Roberts ('Iseifion'), Fourcrosses, Chwilog, 1921 (3 and one undated), and H. J. Williams, Llyfrfa y Cyfundeb, Caernarfon, 1922-3 (5); corrected page-proofs of Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon, pp. 288a, 288b and 313-363, with a typewritten copy and a draft of the preface; notes and scraps in the autograph of 'Myrddin Fardd'; and part of the manuscript of 'Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon', pp. 313-77, in the autograph of 'Myrddin Fardd', with one or two items in the autograph of J. H. Davies. Unrelated items include part of an article (see also Cwrtmawr MS 892B) on Hugh Hughes the artist and author in the autograph of [J. Spinther James].

A volume (511 pp.) containing 'Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon ... gan Ymchwiliwr' ['sef John Jones (Myrddin Fardd)' added in another hand], a prize-winning entry at the Caernarfon National Eisteddfod, 1877; it is fuller than the published work bearing the same title. Inserts include a letter, 29 January 1806, from D[avid] T[homas] ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr to ?[David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion')] (the illness and death of the writer's brother, Humphrey [Thomas]), a letter, 1905, from [the Reverend] E[van] Evans, Llansadwrn Rectory, Menai Bridge to ['Myrddin Fardd'] (names of subscribers to Cynfeirdd Lleyn), a copy by 'Glynn' of the inscription on the (?) tombstone of the Reverend J. H. Hughes ('Ieuan o Leyn'), a letter, year not given, from [the Reverend] D. Roberts, Llanelidan Rectory, Ruthin to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') (replying to a query concerning his father, the late Reverend William Roberts, rector of Llanddeiniolen), and a number of press cuttings, etc. There are also some sheets (161-173 and 329) from a later manuscript version of 'Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon' and a transcript by [W. H. Roberts ('Iseifion')] of a note by 'Myrddin Fardd' on David Williams, MP, JP, DL ('Dewi Heli') (see Cwrtmawr MS 932D).

Miscellaneous papers, c. 1763-1869, connected mainly with the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837), Darowen and members of his family and including a considerable number of wills and other documents, many of which are drawn up and witnessed by the Reverend Thomas Richards, items of correspondence, poetry, petitions, accounts, bills, etc. The wills had already been arranged under parishes (Llanymowddwy; Llanbrynmair; Darowen; Machynlleth and Penegoes; Cemmes, Mallwyd and Dolgelley; and Llangynfelyn, Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn and Llanbadarn) and a list of the contents has now been compiled and inserted in the manuscript.

A transcript of 'A Course of Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. By Hugh Blair D.D. Vol I. Edinburgh Winter 1768/91', with corrections and additions, by Paul Panton (the younger). These lectures were first published in 1783.

A manuscript index to J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Môn) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9) compiled for J. H. Davies by T. Vaughan Roberts, London and completed in 1911. The general index (420 pp.) is followed by lists of 'Words and phrases characteristic of the Morrises or illustrating forms commonly used by them' and 'Books, Pamphlets, Manuscripts & Poems referred to', references to 'Trades & Professions', and a number of corrections. Other items ('Removed from the manuscript before it was sent to Mr Jenkin James, January 7, 1931') consist of a letter, 1911, from the compiler, T. Vaughan Roberts to J. H. Davies, and a letter, 1902, from John Ballinger, Cardiff to J. H. Davies enclosing notes and items of verse (mainly by Lewis Morris) copied by J. Ifano Jones from 'an imperfect copy of Dr John Davies's Dictionary, 1632, once the property of Lewis Morris' and from copies of [Huw Jones], Diddanwch Teuluaidd (Llundain, 1763) which belonged to John William Prichard, Plas-y-brain and Nicholas Bennett respectively.
