Letter from Maharajah Shitab Rae to Clive.

Thank you very much for your letter informing me that you have appointed Mr Rumbock Sahib who is a very able administrator to take charge of the Koshal Kothi at Azimabad and that he would be leaving in four days and reach here shortly afterwards. As soon as Mr Middleton leaves here Mr Ronbock will act as his substitute. You have also expressed your concern at the inefficient way the revenue is being collected at present and that we should try our best so that we collect all the instalment at the proper time. The appointment of Mr Ranbock is a welcome step and no one has any doubt in his abilities. We will offer him whatever help and advice is needed and which Mr [Samuel] Middleton will approve. As far as the collection of revenue is concerned I can assure you that we work day and night to achieve the best results. The only exception is the province of Shikare which is lying waste and is uninhabited. We are trying our best to chase the defaulters and hope to receive the defaulted amounts in the near future.

Letter from Sayyid Muhammad Varis Bukhari to Clive.

Thank you very much for your reply informing me that the military action against the zamindars was to curtail the troubles and to give them an appropriate punishment for their crimes and that I should not mistake it for anything else and that you were appointing tilangas to maintain law and order in the countryside. Believing that you have been appointed by God to be generous to your friends I am sure that whatever actions you take are for the benefit of all of us.

Letter from Rajah Shitab Rae to Clive.

Thank you for your letter received here on the 28th of Jamadi al-Avval asking me to send Rajah Dhiraj Narayan to you. I had earlier informed you that because the festival of Diwali is approaching Rajah Dhiraj Narayan wanted to delay his departure until the 1st of Jamadi al-Sani, San 8. Since then I have reminded him daily about his commitment and it is only yesterday, on Sunday the 5th of this month, that he came to inform me that he had to go to the Hindu ritual baths/ashnan for a few days and without any further delay would depart for Murshidabad on the 15th of this month. I hope he keeps his words otherwise I will make sure that he takes the route to Murshidabad on that date.

Letter from Raja Mahendra Bahadur to Clive.

My diwan has submitted all the amounts due to Nawab Intizam al-Daulah Mr Sanks Bahadur Haibat Jang. I would appreciate if Nawab Mubariz al-Mulk Muin al-Daulah Bahadur Muzaffar Jang is informed. I would be grateful if you could inform me about your well-being.

Letter from Shuja al-Daulah, Safdarjang to Clive.

Thank you very much for your letter of the 12th of Rabi al-Avval, delivered to me by Captain Dokaral [Douglas?] on the 28th of Rabi al-Avval, regreting the delay in my arrival in Allahabad and also informing me that you are intending to return to England; perhaps you would consider delaying your departure. As the company officials had appointed you to lead all the expeditions we are wondering who will be appointed to replace you. If it is Colonel Barker who takes over we know that he would come to my help whenever I need him. General Carnic John Bahadur [Carnac] is leaving as well but he would also be able to come to my resecue if I needed him. -- I have already replied to you about some of the issues mentioned in your letter. The delay in reaching Allahabad was because of a physical condition and I was unable to undertake this journey.

Letter from ? to Clive.

Thank you for your letter along with a parvanah from Maharajah Sahib informing me that the army of the prince was on the run after it's defeat and that I should stop or destroy it if it tries to pass through my territory. As a matter of fact, the prince had already crossed the river Suan before I received parvanahs from the Maharajah Sahib, Navab Sahib and Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur. I am sending my vakil, Devdatt Das, who will be able to explain the situation to you in detail.

Letter from Amir Beg Khan to Clive.

Thank you for your letter with the good news that two large ships with a large force on board have arrived and some more are on their way. I am sure these will help you to achieve your heart's desires in full. Meanwhile, the letter which Rajah Singh wrote to me is enclosed for your information. -- Enclosure: From Amir Beg Khan to Clive. -- I had earlier informed you about my circumstances in detail. The latest news is that I reached Calcutta with my army on the 15th of Rabi al-Avval, San 5, and went to see Navab Sabitjang, Masih Jang Bahadur and Diwan Nand Kumar. I explained to them my circumstances in detail and sought their advice in paying back the loans I had obtained to pay the government. They have adviced me to settle the loans of the mahajans first. As the repayment of these loans is increasing day by day it is becoming difficult for me to pay the loans back and I seek your help to intervene.

Letter from Clive to Maharajah Dulabha Ram Bahadur.

Surajah Doulah had taken from Omichund some money and goods but on an application being made he was ordered to return them all. Omichund had received but a small quantity of goods and some money; you may remember this well. Omichund was receiving the balance when Mr Watts sent him down about Meir Jaffer's business and told him when that was finished Meir Jaffer would certainly pay him the balance. Meir Jaffer is now Nubab and so could you ask his Diwan to inform him of this and request him to pay the balance in money.

Letter from Pihalvan Singh to Dundi Chaudhari.

Translation of a letter Pihalvan Singh wrote to Dunde Chaudhari. -- 1. Thank you for your last report. I am with a person who is lord of both worlds. No one has the power to take over my state. The Rajah of Ujain does not have the guts to look towards my lands with greed. They can burn ten or twenty of my villages but would not be able to takeover my state. The Prince is not going to move from here. If Beni Bahadur comes on this side of Benares he would see what happens to him. -- 2. Translation of a letter from the tavakkul and companion of Pihalvan Singh to Dunde Chaudhari. -- The Prince came to see Pihalvan Singh on Wednesday and presented four thousand rupees to him. Pihalvan Singh is managing the affairs of the army. Shivdat Narayan went to see Narobad Singh and asked him to join them; we are still waiting for their arrival. Sunbhal Singh went to the house of Raj Rup and later Pihalvan Singh also joined them. The Prince has five thousand horsemen but many have deserted him. Raj Rup has gone with his force to Sehsaram to ambush the enemy forces at night. -- Enclosure: Translation of a holograph letter Pihalvan Singh wrote to Adhar Choley. -- Thank you for your letter. This country is a gift from God and is not the property of any one person. The sons of Odey Singh are like children; they do not know how to reply to my letters. The Rajah of Ujain should know very well that he cannot occupy my land. Farmers working on my land know my worth and would not allow anyone else to take over. Miran and Colonel Sahib would not be able to establish their camps in this area.

Letter from Mir Ja'far to Clive and Members of the Council.

Thank you for your letter regarding the payment of twenty five Lac rupees for the maintenance of land and sea forces and which you say that you had made clear to me that I must pay and that without the payment of this amount you would not be able to satisfy Patrick? Akhtan? Bahadur [Board of Governors?]. -- At the time I agreed to this demand I had told Mr Dache [French Admiral Comte de D' Ache'] that I do not know how much money was left in my treasury and in case there was not enough money left I would not be able to fulfil this demand. In this situation I would not be able to agree to this demand. I am therefore writing to inform you and Mr D'Arche' that there is not enough money available in our treasury. This can be confirmed from the Jagat Seth brothers and the Maharajah [Diwan] who are both very well known to you. I have agreed with them that I am willing to pay half of this amount. Out of this I am willing to pay half in cash and half in commodities. It would not be possible for me to pay more than that in cash as I have to take into account the payment I have to make to my own army. This is in addition to the demand of Chauth/one-fourth from the Marathas and payment made to the King Emperor. God willing, I will be able to pay the fist instalment of the above amount in the month of Katak and the rest in Chet. I am unable to agree or pay any additional sums. I am sure there is enough money in the Company's coffers that you could pay the Board of Governor this amount now and replace it when you have received it from me.
