Letter book, [1841]-1891, of David Evans (Dewi Dawel), also used by him as a minute book for the Glynsanan Benefit Society, Llanfynydd.
The volume contains accounts, minutes and resolutions, [1841]-1870, of the Glynsanan Benefit Society (ff. 1-17, 134 verso, 137-139, 154 verso); summaries, copies and drafts, 1871-1891, of letters sent by David Evans, relating to family matters and his work as a tailor, publican and rate-collector, as well as a few letters by his son, Thomas Morgan Evans (ff. 23-136 verso, 137 verso-147, 148-149); miscellaneous memoranda and accounts, 1869-1886 (ff. 17-22); parts of an essay on the history of Talyllychau, [1890] (ff. 147 verso-148, 150 verso-152; see also NLW MS 9510E); various verses in Welsh, 1890-[1891] (ff. 147, 149 verso-150, 152 verso-154); and a memorandum relating to a ploughing match in Cwm-du, 1878 (ff. 5, 6). Part of a draft letter of condolence, [1876], to the family of the late John Johnes, Dolaucothi, is loose between ff. 17-18.

Four letters, mostly in English, May-October 1831, May 1834, from John Jones (Tegid), Oxford, to Henry Jones, Merthyr Tydfil, mainly concerning Tegid's dispute with William Bruce Knight on the proposed reform of Welsh orthography (see W. B. Knight, Remarks, Historical and Philological, on the Welsh Language (Cardiff, 1830) and John Jones, Reply to the Rev. W. B. Knight's 'Remarks' on Welsh Orthography (Cardiff, 1831)).
Tegid quotes excerpts from letters of support received from Aneurin Owen (f. 1 verso), the Rev. Walter Cecil Davies (f. 2), George Phillips, BA, (f. 2) and Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) (f. 5). Also included are holograph poems, in Welsh (ff. 5 verso-6, 7, 10), including 'Merch ieuanc mewn darvodedigaeth', 1833 (f. 7), which was published in the Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 5 (1833), 56.

A scrap album containing manuscript and printed items, newspaper cuttings, etc., described on the first page as 'Casgliad amrywiol o eiddo Ionawryn Williams [see the preceding manuscript] yn cynnwys engreifftiau o'i ddiddordeb a'i weithgarwch. Ceir ynddo hefyd nodiadau ychwanegol ar rai o Gymry Manceinion . . .' The manuscript material includes a copy of an anonymous election manifesto addressed to the [Manchester] Welsh, denouncing the previous Conservative administration and advocating the return of Messrs. Jacob Bright and John Slagg as [Liberal] members for the city [of Manchester] [?1880]; a holograph letter from Joseph Parry, University College, Cardiff, to Mr. [Ionawryn] Williams, 1899 (reference to the writer's fifth opera King Arthur); a holograph postcard from Owen M[organ] Edwards, Oxford, to Mr. [Ionawryn] Williams, 1898 (acknowledging the receipt of 'englynion' and hymns); poems addressed to Ionawryn Williams at Bethesda [co. Caernarvon] (1900); miscellaneous other poems; a few biographical notes on Manchester Welshmen; etc. The printed items include copies of a prospectus (with order form attached) advertising Ionawryn Williams's forthcoming volume of biographies of Manchester Welshmen [see the preceding manuscript]; a handbill announcing 'A Liberal demonstration of the north east and south east divisions of the county of Lancaster' to be held at Manchester, 24 and 25 October 1879; the rules (with balance sheet and list of members and officials) of the Manchester Welsh National Society (1894-1895); the programme of the same society's activities for the session 1895-1896; menus and programmes in connection with St. David's day celebration dinners in Manchester (1891 and undated); the programme (with rules and list of officials) of the Booth Street East Young People's Literary Society for the session 1869-1870; a commemorative article on Ellis Roberts of Manchester by Ionawryn Williams (extracted from Y Cronicl, July 1893), and a similar article on Ionawryn Williams himself (extracted from Y Cronicl, October 1907). The newspaper cuttings, which form the largest class of insets, are of a varied nature. Most refer to persons and events connected with the Manchester and Salford area from the 1860's to the early twentieth century. They include, inter alia, obituary notices of Welshmen who had some connection with Manchester (e.g., Sir William Roberts, physician, ob. 1899, Professor Thomas Jones, surgeon, ob. in South Africa, 1900), Manchester news items of Welsh interest (e.g., St. David's day celebrations, meetings of Welsh societies, a meeting in connection with Welsh disestablishment in 1883), poems by Ionawryn Williams, and other miscellaneous verse.

Thirty-one holograph and autograph letters and postcards (surnames A-G), 1874-1934, addressed to the Rev. C. Tawelfryn Thomas. Frequent references to the Rev. Evan Jones (Ieuan Gwynedd) in the correspondence relate mostly to Thomas's biography, Cofiant Darluniadol Mewn Rhyddiaeth a Chân i'r Diweddar Barch. Evan Jones... (Dolgellau, 1909).

Miscellanea, including incomplete adjudications by Owen Jones on essays on the antiquities of the vale of Conway ('Henafiaethau Dyffryn Conway'), the foundation of Maenan Abbey ('Sefydliad Mynachlog Maenan'), etc.; the Elementary Certificate of the Tonic Sol-fa College awarded to William Rowland Williams, 1889 (the signatures include that of David Jenkins, examiner); a typescript copy of a poem in Welsh on the secession of Edward Stephen ('Tanymarian') to the Tory Party in 1874, with an accompanying note by R. Tecwyn Lloyd], inserted loose in the volume (2 ff.). A sheet of arithmetical tables, sold by P. Sandford, Shrewsbury, [c. 1795], is pasted inside the front cover.

Among the works quoted are a Latin poem by George Herbert (f. 1 verso) and a Bengali version of John 3.16, 1885 (f. 75 verso). There are englynion in English by David Griffith (Clwydfardd) referring to a visit to the Great Exhibition, 1851 (f. 77). Also included are sketches of a dog, 1878 (f. 31), and of Abergele, 1866 (f. 67).

'Llyfr Miss Catherine Jones Post Office Clynnog 1861', being a notebook containing a pedigree showing the descendants of Gruffydd Humphrey, Llangybi, Caernarvonshire, one of them being Evan Owen, who was a Calvinistic Methodist preacher at Talysarn in 1861, together with miscellaneous poems by Ebenezer Thomas (Eben Fardd).

Items found loose at the beginning of the volume have been tipped in on ff. i-iv; these include a list of contents of the manuscript (f. i), a printed elegy for William Owen Pughe by John Jones (Tegid), 1836 (f. iii), and a series of englynion by Siôn ap Morgan (f. iv).
