Exchequer Writ. Inspeximus of a record before the Barons of the Exchequer, Trinity term, 36 Elizabeth (1594). Account of Robert Davyd, esq., Receiver General in co. Monmouth (as in No. 1717) on which Sheriff of Monmouth was ordered, 12 February 1591, to have execution at Exchequer, Easter term, to which Henry Herbert, esq., Sherrif, returned, 12 April 1591, that certain of the premises in the tenure of William Powell in Wolvesnewton, as found by inquisition of the annual value of 26s. 8d. Ordere that these should be taken in Queen's hand. Nicholas Harbert, Sheriif, returned that 41 animals of William Powell, tenament of the land of tenements in Wolvesneuton so taken for debt of £55. 16. 8. William Powell now appeared. Before the debt incurred various persons were seised of the said lands and tenements in Wolveneuton of the said William Powell, namely of a parcel in a meadow in the parish of Wolvesneuton called Gwyrlod a Beden, in which Nicholas Harbert took a cow and a bull of which Jenkin ap John ap Gellan and Elianor, his wife, were seised to hold of William, late Earl of Pembroke, as of the manor of Usk by fealty and all services by charter dated 10 August 3 Edward (1549), which premises were granted to Phillipp Powell, William's father, whose heir he is and was so seised for 15 years before his death, of a parcel of land in Wolvesneuton specified in the inquisition called Hendre boeth, ynys dan y allt and Kaye y tye hene, William Bale, Thomas Ode, and Robert Fowler were seised in fee of the manor of Uske by fealty and all services and by writing dated 8 October 13 Henry VIII (1521) enfeoffed Phillip Powell, William's uncle, who entered and so died seised, when they descended to David Philipp Powell, William's father, after whose death they came to William. The premises specified in the writ, namely half the manor of Mathern, are not in Wolvesneuton nor near the vill of Wolvesneuton. but lie in the parish of Mathern, a place of 4 miles from Wolvesneuton. The arrears were due for certain lands and tenements in Neuton iuxta Mathern. William Powell's chattels to be restored to him.
