The contents of this volume are of a miscellaneous nature and include 'Epitre a Boileau', 1806, (first folio misplaced and to be found towards the end of the volume), a copy of a letter, 1808, from Thomas Powell, 'aux Chataignes a Tottenham' to Monsieur L'Abbé De Levisac [i.e. Jean Pons Victor Lecoutz de Levizac], 'Epistle to Capt. Cooke', a copy of a memorial inscription in Latin to Henry Michel[l], A.M. (d. 1789), items of verse in French, 'Brief Dissertation on antient Opera', 'Epitre a mi Lord Orford' [i.e. Horace Walpole], and lines in French 'To Mrs Crespigny on her Novel The Pavilion, 1796'.

A volume containing 'Selim. Il Medico Persico - Selim the Physician of Persia, a Tragic Opera' by [Thomas Powell]. 'T: de Monm: fec: Decr. 1776. Jan. 1777'.

Thomas Powel[l]: Poetry,

A small volume containing 'Original Compositions' by Thomas Powell, mainly in verse, some described as having been printed in The Gentleman's Magazine. The titles include 'ode to Captain James Luttrell', 'Inscription at Strawberry Hill', 'Inscription at Gloster house, Twickenham' ('Seat of James Whitchurch Esqr & his Lady - my very good Friends both'), and 'Inscription in a rural Temple in the Grove, at York House - Twickenham'.

Gwaith Ieuan Brydydd Hir - II,

A composite volume similar in format to Cwrtmawr MS 445 containing further transcripts by W. H. M[ounsey], 1861 (pp. 1-62, 65-80), copies (typewritten) of letters from Evan Evans to David Jones, Trefriw and to Richard Davies at Oxford and Holywell (pp. 81-127), a transcript of the poem 'The Love of our Country', 1772, and of a letter, 1767, from Evan Evans to Dr Humphrey Owen, Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, with a note (crossed out), 1868, from Evan Jones, Lampeter, followed by transcripts of other poems and letters included in the printed volume (1876). Loose in the volume are a transcript of a letter, 6 January 1777, from [David Jones] 'Dewi Fardd', Trefriw to Evan Evans and of a 'cywydd' by the same to the same (inserted after p. 127), and notes on Evan Evans in an earlier hand. J. H. Davies has written on the fly-leaves at the end of the volume: 'All printed in Gwaith I[euan] B[rydydd] Hir 1876 Except pp. 81-127'. The loose items were not printed either.

Owain Gwyrfai MS,

A miscellaneous volume (496 pp.; original pagination incorrect) in the autograph of Owen Williams (1790-1874; 'Owain Gwyrfai'), c. 1841-67, of which the main contents are pedigrees of North Wales families transcribed from manuscripts of the Reverend D. Ellis [Cricieth] and Owen Gruffydd, Llanystumdwy and from other sources (with some additions to Owen Williams's own day); transcripts of twenty-four letters, 1752-7 and 1767, from Goronwy Owen to Richard Morris from a (?)manuscript of Mr Loyd [sic], Plasmeini, Festiniog and of eleven letters, 1752-4, from Goronwy Owen to William Morris ('D.S. Dyma lythyrau'r Gwiliedydd im tyb i. O.W.', but this seems doubtful), and extracts transcribed from the introduction to Lewis Morris's 'Celtic Remains' and from [John Reynolds, A Display of Herauldry (1739)] ('Yr hanesion canlynol a dynwyd o hen lyfr achau a argraffwyd o ddeutu amser Cromwel o waith Reinols'). There is a rough index at the beginning and end of the volume. J. H. Davies has written the following note in pencil on the fly-leaf: 'This is the Llyfr Coch which O[wen] W[illiams] always carried under his arm at Eisteddfodau & Literary meetings. It was originally bound in a red cover.'.

Sermons and hymns,

A composite notebook bearing on the cover the name of Jeffrey Davies [Tirabad, Brecknockshire], 1822, and 'Llyfr III' and containing outlines of sermons, mainly in English, and a few Welsh hymns, etc. One of the hymns ('O Arglwydd rho dy wyneb cu') appears to be by Jeffrey Davies [the Reverend Jeffrey Davies is referred to in John Hughes, Methodistiaeth Cymru (Gwrecsam, 1856), III, 335 : he was ordained at Cardigan Association, August, 1830 and ordained deacon by the bishop of Llandaff, 7 April 1839. At the time of his death in 1844 he appears to have been curate of Cadoxton, Glamorgan (see D. Rhys Phillips, The History of the Vale of Neath, (Swansea, 1925), p. 83].

Bardd Treflys MS,

A volume consisting of a notebook which belonged originally to Robert Roberts, Ty mawr, Treflys [Caernarvonshire], 1775, containing mensuration tables, etc. and miscellaneous accounts, c. 1790-1815, mainly in Welsh, by Robert Roberts and one or more of his brothers. Over some of the pages and on additional leaves inserted at the beginning have been pasted cuttings of 'englynion' and other compositions mainly by Richard Roberts ('Bardd Treflys'; 1818-76); there are also some holograph items by Richard Roberts and transcripts by Ellis Owen, Cefn-y-meysydd and by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The contents include 'Cywydd am fenthig Lanter Mawrth 20 1844' and 'Cân y Palm oil', both by Richard Roberts ('Bardd Treflys').

Ysgrif-lyfr Hywel Eryri,

A manuscript.volume (28 ff.) containing poetical compositions ('englynion', 'penillion', hymns and carols, etc.) almost entirely by Hugh Evans ('Hywel Eryri' or 'Hugh Eryri' [?1764-1847]), some dated 1827-8 and 1842-3. It seems doubtful whether the volume is in his autograph as an englyn at the end by Morris Roberts, Melin Llanllyfni, dated 22 June 1847, is headed 'Englyn a gyfansoddwyd ar yr achlysur gladdu yr oedranus Fardd "Hywel Eryri".' A page or pages are missing at both the beginning and the end of the volume.

A composite volume containing poetical compositions by Hugh Evans ('Hugh Eryri') [or 'Hywel Eryri': cf. Cwrt-mawr MS 466B], some dated 1826-8 (26 pp., repaired, incomplete); transcripts in various hands of poetry by [Thomas Williams] 'Twm Pedrog' (torn) and of a cywydd by Dafydd Nanmor; 'Duhuddiant i Eben Fardd a'i deulu ar farwolaeth ei eneth ieuangaf - Elizabeth, Medi - 1858' by [Robert Hughes] 'Robyn Wyn' (?holograph); transcripts of poetical compositions by [Evan Pritchard] 'Ieuan Llyn' or 'Ieuan ap Rhisiart'; part of an exercise-book bearing the names of R. Gwaith Philypiaid Ardudwy ac eraill,

A volume (watermark 1870) containing transcripts of poems in strict metre by Gruffydd Phylip, Syr Owain ap Gwilym, Richard Phylip, Siôn Phylip, Siôn Dafydd Siancyn and Richard Cynwal. The original pagination is defective and sections are wanting at the beginning and elsewhere in the volume. The volume was probably transcribed by Robert Prys Morris ('Robyn Frych'). The name 'Robyn Frych?' has been written in pencil inside the front cover.

Taicroesion Pedigrees,

A volume containing a late nineteenth or early twentieth century transcript of the Taicroesion Pedigrees, described on the title page as 'A most valuable copy transcribed by a Solicitor and examined and compared with the original, so it is the most reliable copy extant'. There are, however, some errors of transcription and some additions. There is a table of contents at the beginning and the pedigrees are followed by a list of the names of the high sheriffs for Caernarvonshire, 1540-1796, written in a different hand.

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. R.'], Conway to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans, 1882 (1) (an appeal - some friends are moving to reward the writer for his pioneer efforts to obtain Postal Reforms), J[oseph] Harris ['Gomer'], editor, Swansea to the Reverend Walter Davies, rector of Manavon, 1819 (1) (requesting a few communications for Seren Gomer), lines of verse in the autograph of John Ceiriog Hughes beginning 'Roedd Prydydd yn eistedd ei [sic] wrth ochor y tan ...', a (?) Llyfr nodiadau Job Morgan,

A notebook containing an obituary notice and other items by Job Morgan, Aberystwyth, viz 'Cofiant am Mr Morgan Owen, Amaethwr, Cefnyrych, Maesyfed' (Seren Gomer, 1839, p. 2), 'Godidawgrwydd y Beibl' (Yr Haul, Llanymddyfri, 1839, p. 216), 'Damwain Alarus', a 'Rhybydd i'r Byd' (Yr Athraw, Llanidloes, 1839, p. 208), and 'Gwagedd y Byd' (incomplete).

Anterliwt: 'Frederick Brenin Denmark',

An incomplete interlude of unknown authorship which is generally referred to as ['Frederick Brenin Denmark']. The characters include Sir Waltro Arglwydd (?) Maria, Frederick Brenin Denmark, Marteinws (Merteinws), Francus Prins o Gandi, Griffrii y Duwk o holant, etc. The number '3' is written on the original brown paper wrapper.

Medical recipes, etc.

A volume (78 pp.) written in several hands, in part at least between 1755 and 1763, containing medical recipes headed 'Cynghorion', 'englynion' by William Phylip, Gr. ap Ievan 'o lannerch llyweni', 'Robin ddu o hir Addig', Einion ap Gwalchmai, extracts from 'Talysau [sic] yr hen Oesodd' [sic]', 'englynion' between 'Colwyn' and 'Craff' ('gwaith brus mawr. Evanvs Thomasvs'), 'geiriau gwir Taliessin', and a numbered series of medical recipes headed 'Cynghorion amriw ddolurie'. There are also memoranda giving the date of birth of some of the children of Thomas Lewis and Margratte [sic] Evanes, etc., and some accounts [?Penllyn district, Merioneth].

Poetry,

A manuscript volume (46 pp.) containing 'cerddi', etc., some religious, (?)in the autograph of Evan Thomas, 1756-7. The poets represented are Richart Parry, Dafydd Johns, Huwga or Hugha [sic] Morus, Morris Roberts o'r Balla [sic]', Matthew Owen, Robert Llwyd, Morgan Lloyd, Ellis Robertts, Evan Thomas (?Evan Thomas penygaur) and Owen Criffudd [sic]. There are also some 'englynion', etc. in the margins: one such entry (p. 34) is described as being 'o Lyfr Robt Thomas o Landrillo. Evan Thos. ai scrifennodd 1766'. The orthography is rather uncertain throughout. On the cover is written '10. Cerddi. &c.' (cf. NLW MS 2281B).

Commonplace book,

A common-place book begun 27 June 1767. The volume has the number 121 written on the spine and is a companion volume to Cardiff MS 2. 169. The contents of the present common-place book include 'Gwaith Meddygon Myddfai. Transcribed at Green-meadow December 5th &c. 1768' (pp. 49-102); Salm 148 o gynghaneddiad y parchedig Mr. Ellis Wynne' (pp. 103-4); 'A Table shewing the Pay of a Sea Chaplain ...' (p. 105); a note giving the date of birth of Thomas Beynon, 1745, William Beynon, 1750, and Jane Beynon, 1758 (p. 119); and a continuation, 1767-1803, of the reading list published by Professor Thomas (pp. 169-176, 151-168, and 143-8, in that order), followed by an index to the volume. Several leaves have been excised at the beginning, viz. pp. 3-4, 19-24, and 37-48.

Journal to the East Indies & Home [Vol. 1],

The first volume [110 pp.] of a 'Journal to the East Indies & Home' by, and in the autograph of, T. Hastings, who, according to the journal, was going out to join his regiment (22nd Light Dragoons) as a captain. The journal covers the period 25 March - 21 November 1803 and describes the voyage to Madras on board the East Indiaman Wexford and the subsequent 'march' in company with Lieutenant Conran in palanquins as far as Adonee and Hutcholi where the present account ends. There are several sketches in pencil and watercolour, some pasted on to the pages, and also specimens (fragile) of a butterfly and the wing of a flying-fish. At the beginning of the volume are three loose items, probably all originally inside a wrapper marked 'Vellore Papers. Three Letters', containing accounts of the Vellore Mutiny, 1806, viz. a copy of an account by Mrs Fancourt, [widow of Colonel Fancourt], 24 July 1806, and copies made by Mrs Anna Maria Gore, one if not both for Captain Hastings, of a letter, 25 September 1806, from Eliza Prichard, Vellore ('Mr Prichard' being the Garrison Surgeon at Vellore) to Mrs Dalrymple at Hydrebad [sic] and of a letter, 2 October 1806, from Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Gore, Hydrebad to Mr Skardon, this last transcript dated Abinger Hall, 11 May 1807.
