Eben Fardd: Memoranda and accounts,

A composite volume, lettered 'Eben Fardd's MS', comprising day and 'memoranda' books of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'). Among the material recorded by the writer are extracts relating to Tractarianism; diary entries, 1837-9, 1849; shop, school, bookbinding and other accounts, 1839-40; mensuration problems and tables, etc., c. 1834; 'Memorandum of Literary adventures and Transactions ... 1848-55, being largely a list of adjudications at eisteddfodau and literary meetings, and 'adjudicatory transactions conducted on the New Plan', 1855-6, and 'Requisitions & invitations declined', 1855-7; Llanarmon School, Clynnog School, and sundry accounts, 1827; etc.

Letters to Owen Jones,

Two letters to Owen Jones (1833-99), one from D[avid] Saunders, Swansea, [18]77 (his plan for a musical scholarship in memory of Ieuan Gwyllt), the other from J. H. Symond, Gwrecsam, 1866 (is sending the examination papers of Mr George Jones).

Miscellaneous papers of Owen Jones (1833-99) comprising a notebook containing a Welsh translation by [Owen Jones] of 'Antigone', dated 12 Jan. 1866 (cf. Y Traethodydd XXI (1866), pp. 176-202) and some items of verse, 1869-75; a list of book titles, 1841-90, also by Owen Jones, with some notes in pencil probably by Charles Ashton; a notebook in an earlier hand containing hymn stanzas and other items of verse in Welsh, with receipts, 1854-5, from Thomas Jones, Vrongain [Llidiardau near Bala] to various persons for rents in the Llidiardau district, 'Coste wrth adeiladu Ty'r ffridd, 1859', etc.; and other items including 'Cwrs y Byd', gan un a'i lygad yn ei ben, Llythyr viii', a letter from Owen Jones to [?the Reverend John Davies, Bontddu] (beginning wanting), a copy of a reply, 1861, from Owen Jones to Dr Edwards concerning Llanuwchllyn, some Bala College examination results [1866], 'Dau Hir a Thoddaid, Beddargraph Thomas Stephens, Merthyr (Eisteddfod Caernarfon 1877)' by 'Dyfrid Beneurog', Alban Hefin 1877, extracts from printed sources including Y Drysorfa and one or two printed items ('Cyfarfod Misol Trefaldwyn Uchaf. Letters, etc. addressed mainly to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), the correspondents being E[benezer] Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), Clynnog to John Thomas ('Sion Wyn o Eifion'), Chwilog, 1842 (the health of the addressee's sister, mention of the Memoir) and to the Reverend Hugh Owen, Treveilir, Aberffro [sic], 1849 (re adjudicating at the Aberffro Eisteddfod (holograph copies)), D. R. Daniel, London, 1920 (submitting a short article on 'Y Clochydd', etc.), [John Daniel] 'Rhab[anian]', Rheithordy Llandudwen, 1908 (he intends to visit the addressee), ? E. L. Reverend Daniel Silvan Evans manuscripts,

Cwrtmawr MSS 895-925 consist mainly of letters addressed to the Reverend Daniel Silvan Evans (1818-1903), cleric, poet, translator, editor and lexicographer. See also MSS 755, 758-759, 767-768. Note: There is a very large number of letters addressed to D. Silvan Evans with the D. Silvan Evans Papers, which form part of the Cwrtmawr Papers.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Sixty-two letters and two postcards, 1869-83 and undated, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend E[dward] L[owry] Barnwell, Melksham, largely concerning Archaeologia Cambrensis, of which D. Silvan Evans was editor, 1871-5. In addition there are three letters to E. L. Barnwell from [the Reverend] Reginald Hughes, Glyn [Ceiriog], 1871, J. H. Le Keux, Durham, 1871, and Richard R. Brash, Cork, 1874, respectively.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Thirty nine letters, 1873-81, from Edward Breese, Morva Lodge, Portmadoc to D. Silvan Evans, largely concerning books and manuscripts. Reference to what the Council calls the 'revolt' of the staff at Aberystwith [sic], 1879.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Seventeen letters, 1888-93, to D. Silvan Evans from [the Reverend] T[homas] Briscoe, Holyhead mainly concerning points of translation (Biblical, the Apostles' Creed, etc.), with references also to the non-resident canonry offered to the addressee.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Eighteen letters to D. Silvan Evans, seventeen of which, 1870-98, are from T[homas] C[harles] Edwards, Liverpool, Aberystwyth and Bala (bibliographical and lexicographical matters, matters in connection with the University College, Aberystwyth, the writer's paper on Salesbury, Dr Lewis Edwards's translation of Cowper's hymn 'God moves in a mysterious way') and one, [18]76, from E. P[enllyn] Jones, University College, Aberystwyth. The last three letters from T. C. Edwards are in another hand except for the signature.

Twenty-six letters and postcards, etc., 1886-[19]01, from J. Gwenogfryn Evans, Oxford and Llanbedrog, twenty five to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans (replying to queries and giving correct readings, the writer's own work, sympathy on the death of Mrs Evans, the Dictionary, asking for permission to catalogue the addressee's Welsh manuscripts, etc.) and one, [18]97, to [J. H. Silvan] Evans (advice concerning the Dictionary).

Paul Panton: Miscellanea,

A volume of Paul Panton [the younger] (1758-1822) of Plasgwyn, Anglesey, comprising six notebooks or commonplace books, of which the first five are labelled 'Miscellaneous' and the sixth 'Cicero', together with a few additional leaves. The contents are largely in the form of extracts from printed sources (e.g. from Edward Gibbon, David Hume, Sir John Hawkins, James Boswell, Thomas Pennant, etc.) and annotated extracts from the works of Cicero. The volume is lettered 'Paul Panton's MSS'.

Y Gododdin, etc.

A manuscript containing a transcript of the text of 'Y Gododdin', in old and modern orthography; an adjudication by Owen Jones ('Owain Myfyr') and Rob[er]t Hughes ('Robin Ddu o Fôn') on an elegy to Mr [Richard] Morys, President of the Honourable Society of Cymrodorion; 'Awdl ar y Testyn Jubili Mor-glawdd Tre' Fadog' by Dafydd Thomas ('D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri'), 1811; and 'Beirniadaeth Gymreig' being reviews ('Ad-olwg') by D. Thomas ('o Arfon'), 1812, of 'Awdl ar Amaethyddiaeth' by Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'] and a similar composition by Edwd. Hughes ['Y Dryw'], both submitted to an eisteddfod at Tre' Fadog, 1811. The text of the 'Gododdin' is in the hand of David Ellis (1736-95), vicar of Cricieth, and the remainder of the manuscript in the hand of David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri', 1759-1822).

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Fifty-one letters and postcards, etc., 1886-88, to D. Silvan Evans, all except one from H[enri] Gaidoz, Paris, largely concerning material for the Revue Celtique. A few of the letters have been written from places other than Paris, among them Bala, Londres (London), Plouaret, Fontainebleau and Merthyr Tydvil [sic]. The other letter is from E. Muntz, Londres, 1871.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Twelve letters (two damaged), with enclosures and part of another letter, 1869-84, to D. Silvan Evans from Edw[ar]d Hamer, Talywaun and Abersychan (Pontypool) and Llanidloes (the writer's wish to have perfect copies of two poems by Huw Arwystli [sic], the 'Llyfryddiaeth' [i.e. Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry], names of rivers in Montgomeryshire, etc., reference to the Mold Eisteddfod [1873] initiating the movement for the establishment of a National Library).

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Nineteen letters, 1874-[89], to D. Silvan Evans from B. [i.e. Elizabeth] Johnes, afterwards Lady Hills-Johnes, Dolaucothy, Llandeilo (mention of the Bishop [? Connop Thirlwall], folk customs, requesting translations, literary matters, expressions of sympathy, etc.).

Letters from David Howell ('Llawdden'),

Fifty-eight letters, [1875]-1902, from the Reverend D[avid] Howell ('Llawdden'), Wrexham, Gresford and St Davids, all except two to D. Silvan Evans (personal matters, the 'Geiriadur' and Lady Llanover, a letter from W. Spurrell, Carmarthen (encl.), condolences, the death of [Canon] George Griffiths, the writer's own view of public funerals, how he himself has suffered from 'cliquism', a printed hymn by the writer (encl.), etc.). The other two letters are from D. Howell to Mrs [D. Silvan] Evans, 1887 (Tegid's illness and their own anxiety about Arthur), and to Henry [Silvan Evans], 1898 (a newspaper comment on the application for a Civil List pension for the addressee's father) respectively.

Six letters, 1874-1878 and undated, from [Thomas James] 'Llallawg', Netherthong Vicarage, Huddersfield, five of which are to [D. Silvan Evans] 'Hirlas' (replying to a query, his letter on 'Welsh Preachment', the improvement in the Archaeologia Cambrensis, the importance of (Welsh) grammar, the Sin-Eating controversy, a copy of a letter to John Murray criticizing the 'Hand-Book' for South Wales) and one to [the Rev. Benjamin Williams] 'Gwynionydd' (replying to a genealogical query).
