Edward Jones: Miscellany

A volume, 1790-1800, containing miscellaneous papers of Edward Jones (Bardd y Brenin) (1752-1824), including correspondence, notes and extracts. Inserted in the volume is a foolscap book, 8 pp., containing a translation of the chronological table in the Red Book of Hergest.

Welsh words derived from Latin

A volume, 19 cent., containing a list of Welsh words taken from T. Richards's Welsh Dictionary, 1753, which the writer supposes to be of Roman origin. The list also contains a short introductory note.

A volume, 19 cent., containing four unbound tracts, namely, an essay, in Welsh, on Y Ferch Rinweddol, with verses, probably sent in for an unknown competition (18 pp.); a tale, in Welsh, about Twm o'r Nant, together with a portion of a song by him, in the hand of David Evans, Llanrwst (4 pp.); notes for sermons, in English and Welsh, in the hand of the Reverend D. Davies, Pantteg (18 pp.); notes, in Welsh, on the Protestant Reformation in the hand of the Reverend D. Davies, Pantteg (8 pp.).

Notes of cases of impediments in speech

A volume, 19 cent., containing an account of the various cases of stammering and other impediments in speech treated by Thelwal, the elocutionist, with an index to the names of patients appears at the beginning of the book. Also included are an account of the family of Thelwall (pp. 100-113), taken largely from the Memoir of Gabriel Goodman (1825), and extracts (pp. 115-117) relating to poor rates in various Buckinghamshire parishes.

Llyfr o reolau barddoniaeth Gymraeg, &c.

A grammar of Welsh Poetry by David Thomas (Dafydd Ddu Eryri) entitled Cyfrinach y Beirdd wedi ei ddwyn i'r amlwg : neu Reolau Prydyddiaeth Gymraeg. Dafydd Ddu appears to have circulated copies of this work among the Welsh bards with the object of obtaining their criticism thereon before publication (p. 4). The manuscript also contains a Welsh grammar said to be written by William Jones of Llangadfan (1726-1795), and a religious song of anonymous provenance.

Arguments for maintaining the courts of the Marches

A volume containing an outline of a speech by Sir Francis Bacon, together with the replies of Sergeants Hulton and Harris, before the Privy Council, April 1608. The speech and its responses express support and opposition regarding the contention that Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire were part of the Marches of Wales.

Hugh Thomas: Genealogical collections

A volume containing a 19th century copy of genealogical notes and pedigrees by Hugh Thomas (1673-1720), together with copies of a manuscript history of Brecknockshire and extracts from various other manuscripts.

Historical and topographical collections for Shropshire (Vol. I)

The first of two volumes, containing a 19th century copy of an early 18th century manuscript by Edward Lloyd of Newtown, near Oswestry, barrister-at-law, and William Mytton of Halston, relating to the antiquities of Shropshire. Indexes to the places referred to and a list of the hundreds of Shropshire precede the text of the volume.

A volume, 1759-1812, containing notes, extracts, translations, etc. relating to Breconshire in the hands of the Reverend Hugh Jones of Llangammarch and his son, Theophilus Jones (1759-1812) and contains a great deal of the material obtained by Theophilus Jones for his History.

Charter of Pembroke

A volume containing two 19th century copies of the confirmation of the Charter of Pembroke dated 6 July, 5 Jac. I. The second copy (1809) is labelled 'Charter of Pembroke and Haverfordwest' but does not contain the Charter of Haverfordwest.

Edward Lhuyd: English-Welsh dictionary

A volume, c. 1700, containing an English-Welsh dictionary in the hand of Edward Lhuyd (1660-1709). The plan adopted was to write the English words in two columns, leaving a space after each word for the insertion of the Welsh equivalent; the manuscript begins with 'Badge' and ends with 'Calander' [sic], but the Welsh equivalents have only been given in comparatively few cases.

John Prichard: Dares Phrygius a Hanes Brenhinoedd Prydain

Welsh translation, written c. 1775, of Dares Phrygius and Historia Regum Britanniae. This version of Dares Phrygius is said to agree closely with the test of Jesus College 61 (Red Book of Hergest, Vol. II, p. xx), whilst the version of the Historia Regum Britanniae is one of the compiled versions of Geoffrey's Brut (Red Book, II, xviii). In a note on p. 151 John Prichard claims authorship of this revised text.

Francis Bassano: Arms of Welsh families

A volume containing a collection, late 17 cent., of arms of Welshmen and of Englishmen connected with Wales by Francis Bassano. Also included are copies of monumental inscriptions in the parish church of Sawley, Derbyshire (p. 73) and in Clifton Church (p. 79).

Ebenezer Thomas (Eben Fardd): Brwydr Maes Bosworth

A volume containing an original manuscript poem entitled Brwydr Maes Bosworth which was entered at Llangollen Eisteddfod, 1858 and which is in the hand of Ebenezer Thomas (Eben Fardd) (1802-1863).
