Penegoes and Machynlleth, and Trefeglwys

Title deeds of houses and lands in the parish of Penegoes. 1558-1674, in the combined parishes of Penegoes and Machynlleth, 1606-1695, and in Trefeglwys, 1664-1666. The river Dyfi (Dovey) appears consistently in the boundary clauses. The deeds record several purchases in Penegoes and Machynlleth by the Pughe family of Mathafarn, notably Cae Vownog, Gweirglodd Ledver, Y Borva Las, etc., from Oliver Herbert of Dolforgan, 1634; Kaethgwin or Kae Quin, Llyast Havod Ffraidd, Kae Glas yn Hen Bont, etc., from Richard Danson of St Michaels, Lancaster, 1694/5; and Dolbachoe in Trefeglwys from John Gwyn, 1664-1666. Other personal names include the Pughe family of Dolyrafonddu, Llanwrin, and Ll'n ap Res ap Ieuan ap Gwilkok [of Machynlleth]. The series also contains a lease by Sir Roger Owen of Condover, Salop, of the market tolls of Machynlleth, Melyn y Penrose and fishing rights in the river Dyfi, 1607.

Title deeds of houses and lands called Kaethgwin or Kae Quin, Llyast Havod Ffraidd, Kae Glas yn Hen Bont, Kae Pen Bont or Gwirglodd Pen y Bont in the parish of Penegoes, in the townships of Uwchygarreg and Isygarreg in the parish of Machynlleth, and in Pentre’rallt Street and Pentremaengwyn Street, Machynlleth, 1620, 1694/5. Boundaries include Kae Bach to the highway, the river Dyfi (Dovey) and Gwirglodd Bant. The file includes a deed of sale by Rytherch ap Owen of Machynlleth to Lewys Evans, of Y Kae Glas Ymhen Bont, 1620; and deeds from Richard Danson of St Michaels, Lancaster, Jane, his wife, and Richard Danson the younger, their son, for the sale of all the properties to William Pughe of Mathafarn, with associated documents, 1694/5.

Assignment by John Jones of London to Arthur Champness in trust for John Oldbury, of a judgement obtained in 1670 by Henry Rumsey of Dolwyn Eglwys, Cardiganshire, against Henry Vaughan of Gelli-goch, Montgomeryshire, for a debt secured on tenements called Moel y Coed, Ty Braich Ythellgam, and lands called Dolegau and Llechweth Dyrris, subsequently purchased by Humphrey Jones, then by William Corbett of the Middle Temple, 1695.

Bill of complaint by Edward Pryse, Dame Dorothy Pryse, Francis Vaughan of Llanlery and others, plaintiffs, against Lewis Lewis of Penmaen, Merioneth, defendant, a former agent of Sir Richard Pryse, late of Gogerddan [1683x1695], in response to defendant’s claim for debts against the estate of Sir Richard Pryse and subsequently Sir Thomas Pryse, and his refusal to come to a fair account with plaintiffs.

Alice Lewis vs Dame Dorothy Pryse and Edward Pryse : debt

Bill of complaint in the Chancery division of the Court of Great Sessions for Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire, 1692, by Alice Lewis of Abergwili, widow of Lodowicke Lewis, plaintiff, against Dame Dorothy Pryse, Edward Pryse and Evan Jones, defendants, for neglecting to repay two sums lent by the plaintiff to Sir Thomas Pryse and Sir Richard Pryse in 1674; and a subsequent bill by Griffith Lloyd of Cwmgwili, for non-payment of the debt which was required to fulfil a bequest in the will of Alice Lewis to the poor of the parish of Abergwili, with a bond by the defendants to Lodowicke Lewis,, 1685, a writ and the answer of Edward Pryse, 1696.

They comprise a conveyance by Thomas Pryse the elder to his daughter Elizabeth of Tythin Dolglessing and Pwll yr Yscawen in Faenor, Llanbadarn Fawr, for her maintenance, 1663; a settlement by Sir Thomas Pryse on Dame Elizabeth, widow of Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, then wife of John Herbert, by order of a decree of the Court of Chancery, of parts of the Gogerddan estate in and near Aberystwyth, but excluding the mansion, 1677; a settlement by Vincent Corbett of Ynysmaengwyn and other trustees, for Edward Pryse in accordance with the will of Sir Thomas Pryse of Bodfage Park [Lodge Park, p. Llangynfelyn], following the death of his nephew and heir, Carbery Pryse, 1695; an agreement by Edward Pryse for the financial compensation of Hester Scawen of Llanbadarn Fawr and her daughters, upon renunciation of their interest in the personal estate of Sir Carbery Pryse, deceased, including annuities deriving from his shares in the mines of Bwlch Hir and Esgair Hir, 1695/6., and a declaration of trust by Nicholas Haywood of London to John Oldbury and Thomas Phipps, which may be relevant, 1695.

Mortgages of the manor of Cyfeiliog, a house in Machynlleth, Tal yr Henbont, etc

Mortgages by John Pughe of Mathafarn and by his son, William Pughe, 1666-1697. The first was for £1000 by John Pughe, son of Rowland Pughe, to Nicholas Vanacker of London, of the manor of Cyfeiliog, land called Ffryth Kevenartheg, in Cemais, Ffrydd Tavolwern in the parishes of Llanbryn-mair and Darowen, four tenements and old mills upon the premises, 1666, followed by an assignment by William Pughe and the mortgagee’s sons to Francis Bagshaw of the Middle Temple, London, 1676. The second mortgage was for £1500 by William Pughe to Francis Bagshaw, of a capital messuage in Machynlleth, a tanhouse, Tal yr Henbont and other lands in Isygarreg (tenants named), property in Brynmelin, Penygoes, and Eskir Hyder, Bryn Crono, etc. in Glynceirig, Llanwrin, 1676. Both mortgages were assigned to Thomas Saunders of Beechwood, Hertfordshire, 1684; and there is a further mortgage for £400 to his widow, Helen Saunders, of all the properties, 1696/7.
