Montgomeryshire title deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands belonging to the Pughe family of Mathafarn, mainly in the parishes of Cemais, Darowen Llanbryn-mair, Llanwrin, Machynlleth and Penegoes in Montgomeryshire, 1403-1736. The deeds record the Pughes’ possession, under a crown lease, of the lordships of Arwystli and Cyfeiliog, as well as the names of properties within those lordships, 1568-1673.

Leases and agreements, 1696-1736, by John Lewis of Coedmor, Richard Hughes, agent to Elizabeth Lewis of Hurst, and Walter Pryse of Lincolns Inn and Elizabeth his wife (formerly Lewis) of various properties in the parishes of Llan-gors, Llangasty Tal-y-llyn, Llanfihangel Tal-llyn and Llanfihangel Nant Bran, including Llan-gors House and the mill, 1696, 1723; tithes of the rectory and of Coedy Perthy, Llan-gors, 1725-1726; Clynlloyd, 1726; and the Lodge, Tir Trevinon and Trewallter, 1732, with assignments by the lessee, Vincent Edwards of Hurst, 1736.

Cemais – Llanwrin title deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands of the Mathafarn estate in the parishes of Cemais, Darowen and Llanbryn-mair, 1521-1736, Llandinam, Llangurig and Llanidloes, 1579-1730, Llanwnnog, 1616, and Llanwrin, 1403-1677. Many of the deeds record acquisitions and other transactions by the Pughe family of Mathafarn between 1561 and 1736. One file contains leases and assignments of the lordships of Arwystli and Cyfeiliog, as well as named properties within the lordships, 1568-1673. Some files refer to the Purcell family of Dinthill, Salop, the Meredith family of Glynceirig and the Jones family of Clegyrddwr, Llanbryn-mair

Faenor (Tythyn Bron y Gof, Tythyn Dol y Velin, etc.)

Title deeds of properties called Tythyn Bron y Gof, Tythyn Dol y Velin, Tythyn y Skybor Hen, Tythyn Dan Brin Osber and Tythyn Edward Thomas ap Robert in the township of Faenor Uchaf and parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1704-1736. The file includes family settlements by Stephen Lloyd of Penbryn, Llanbadarn Fawr, and his father-in-law, Watkin Thomas of Faenor, 1704, 1724/5, adding that Tythyn Dan Brin Osber and Tythyn Edward Thomas ap Robert had been purchased from Edward Williams of Hackney; a mortgage by John Lloyd of Dan y Castell, Llanychaearn, and Elizabeth his wife, of the above properties in Faenor and another house called Tythyn Keven Coch in Llanbadarn-y-Creuddyn, 1732, followed by an assignment and sale to Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan of the Faenor properties, and allowing John Lloyd to retain Tythyn Keven Coch, 1734. There is also an account of the sale, 1734, an inquisition of the property of John Lloyd and an assignment of a bond by Elizabeth Lloyd to Thomas Pryse, 1736.

Llan-gors timber records, letters, rent roll, etc.

Letters, accounts and agreements relating mainly to the felling and sale of timber from the Llan-gors estate for specified purposes; the timber merchants and coopers include Mr Hanbury of Pontypool, David and William Tanner of Monmouth, John Knowles of Crucadarn, John Unwin of Llan-gors and Gregory Parry. The letters are addressed mainly to the Lewis family of Hurst, Berkshire, and to Walter Pryse at Holborn, London. Correspondents include John Lloyd, about his expenses in renovating the mill and his own house, 1705; Richard Hughes of Brecon, agent to Elizabeth Lewis, 1720-1736, discussing the marriage of Mr Lloyd of Mabws, 1725; William Lewis of Cathedin, 1727-1734, and John Lewis, 1729; and several letters between George Lewis Langton and John Morgan of Llandovery, about family settlements and a recovery of the Breconshire estate, 1736. Other topics include the Breconshire tenancies and coal mining on the Pembrokeshire estate. The file also contains a copy of the Breconshire rent roll, 1724; a sketch of improvements desired by Walter Pryse, 1725; an agreement for the sale of timber by Lady Ann Morgan at coppices in Dewchurch and St Margarets, Herefordshire, 1725; and an account for the entry to Oriel College Oxford of [George Lewis Langton], 1732.

Darowen

Title deeds of houses, burgages and land in the parish of Darowen, 1561-1736. Boundary clauses mention the highway, Rhyd y Kryddion, lands of the rectory, and a river called Nant Coom Yeyn. Properties include Kaer Bwlch and Y Ddol Fach in the township of Is-y-coed, purchased by John ap Hugh ap Ieuan of Mathafarn, 1561-1563; Y Llain Hir in Noddfa, conveyed by John Pughe to David Gruffith ap John, 1617/18; Tythin Y Bryn Melyn, an iron forge on Dol Ellen and Tythin y Pant Gwyn in Noddfa, gained by Rowland Pughe through an exchange with Rowland Meredith of Glynceirig and Ann his wife, 1628/9; Y Ty yn Llechwedd y Keven Coch, Pen Bryn y Gelly, Yr Ynhereg y Glynn, and the sites of Tythyn Bron Allte Llwyfog and Llyast Nant y Kynnydd, acquired by John Pughe of the Inner Temple, London, 1702; and Bryn ?Gwrian, Ty yn y [?] and Bwlch Glyn Myn[y]dd, conveyed by Humphrey Price of Barn[staple], Devon, and Susanna, his wife, to John Pughe of Mathafarn, 1736. Other properties include land in Blaen Keunant, Tythyn y Fron Goch and Kaier Berth Lwyd in Noddfa, belonging to Lewis ap Gwillim and his son, John, 1595, 1627; and a sitting and burial place in Darowen church, acquired by Rees Meredith of Gwern y Bere, 1679. The file also includes the post-nuptial settlement of Theodore Price of Abergwidol and Elizabeth his wife, comprising Bwlch Glyn Mynydd and a moiety of Wenallt, in Noddfa and Caerseddfan, 1689, and purchase deeds for further portions of Wenallt, 1696, 1701; a deed by Rees Meredith, allowing trustees to transfer Tyddyn Gwerglodd Gydwgan, Tyddyn Gwern y Bere and Tyddyn y Graig and Tyddyn y Nant Ymlaen Ceggir, after his death, to John Pughe, 1701; and the pre-nuptial settlement of Rowland Gwynne of Gwastadcoed and Elizabeth Jones of Berllandeg, 1715.
