A note (incomplete), in a different hand, has been inserted at the end of the list of voters and relates to "an illegal return" by William Myddelton, sheriff, who was consequently sent to Newgate prison; opposite this note a contemporary print has been pasted which shows the sheriff in Newgate. Two letters, dated 24th October 1739, from Sir Watkin Williams Wynn to Edward Maddocks have been inserted into the book.

Vavasor Powel and others: Poetry

A volume containing religious poetry in various 17th century hands. It is possible that the greater portion of the book (pp. 9-132) is in the hand of Vavasor Powel, though his name does not occur anywhere; the poem entitled The Lamentation of Jeremiah (p. 14), for example, was by Powel and was printed in a slightly different form in The Bird in the Cage (1662). A considerable amount of the poetry was composed after 1660, while the author was in prison. Daniel Lloyd of Wrexham (d. 1656), to whose memory two elegies have been written (pp. 101-2), was a friend of Vavasor Powel.

Powell, Vavasor, 1617-1670 Poetry, NLW MS 366A

The first 38 pages of the volume were apparently written by members of the Christmas family and includes an account of the marriage of David and Jemima Christmas in 1808, together with the names of their children; it is possible that this initial section was sewn into the latter portion when the book came into the possession of David Christmas.
