An imperfect manuscript of the second half of the seventeenth century containing medical and culinary recipes based partly on printed sources (e. g., John Gerard: The Herball . . ., 1597), together with a few eighteenth century additions including recipes, stanzas of a Welsh hymn, and musical scores.

A volume, c. 1820, containing notes on the astrological practice of medicine and miscellaneous medical recipes, apparently compiled mostly from printed sources, notably Richard Saunders, The Astrological Judgement and Practice of Physick (London, 1747) and Nathaniel Williams, Pharmacopoeia, or Medical Admonitions in English and Welsh (Trevecka, 1793-6).

Farming account book originally belonging to David Evans of Ayngstree, Clifton-on-Teme, Worcestershire, who seems to have moved there from the Llandysul area of Cardiganshire. The volume comprises accounts, 1897-1915, of sales of farming produce and of wages and allowances to servants and labourers (ff. 1-31, 148 verso-67 verso, 173 verso-7); a few veterinary, household and culinary recipes (ff. 2, 16, 30 recto-verso, 31 verso-2); and family and other memoranda. There are also farming accounts and memoranda, 1943-1968, probably from the Llandysul area (ff. 33 verso-41 verso, 144-6 verso, 172-4).

Notebook, 1834-1861, of the Rev. Evan David, Y Groes-faen, Llantrisant, Glamorgan, containing sermons; accounts and other particulars, 1845-1856, relating to Fforest-fawr and other farms in the Llantrisant area (ff. 6-9, 10 verso-11 verso, 14-15); medical and domestic recipes (ff. 5, inverted text 59 recto-verso); and a list of those pledging themselves to total abstinence (inverted text ff. 51 recto-verso, 52 verso). A newspaper account of the funeral of Evan David is on f. 70 verso.

Hartwell Jones; etc.

An account of proceedings against [ ] Wrainham for presenting to the King a book called 'Revewe and Revivor of the Report of the Mr. of Rolls Phillips and the decree of my lord Chancellor', c. 1610; veterinary and medical recipes; and a tract entitled 'Shorte Articles by way of Instruccon concerninge the Dutye Office and Jurisdiction of the High Admirall of England collected out of the Lettres Pattents of that Office'.

An eighteenth century manuscript consisting of miscellaneous material in the hand of the Reverend Edward Gamage [rector of the parish of St. Athan, co. Glamorgan, 1717-1734] with additions in later eighteenth century hands (see TLLM, tt. 106-07; IM, t. 309; and IMCY, tt. 58-60, 68, 171). In Edward Gamage's own hand are transcripts of Welsh strict- and free-metre poems by Thomas Morgan 'o Dilla garw', Hopkin y Gwaedd 'o Fargam', Rob. Tho[ma]s 'o Sant y Bryd', Thomas Leyshon o'r Prysg', Miles W[illia]m, Thomas W[ilia]m 'o Dregolwyn', Thomas Llewelyn, vicar of Llancarvan, Dafydd Thomas 'o blwyf y Bettws', and Llewelyn ab Iefan, a copy of a letter in Welsh, 23 November 1726, from the said Edward Gamage himself from Sant Athan, to Llewelyn ab Iefan of the parish of Llangrallo [co. Glamorgan], poet, in reply to a request for genealogical information relating to the Stradling family, and, at the reverse end of the volume, 'A Continuation of ye Exposition of ye Church Catechism for ye use of ye Children of ye Parish of Lantwitt Major by E. Gamage, Lecturer and Catechist there', a recipe for a dog bite, and ? sermon notes. Later additions to the volume include transcripts of three stanzas of Welsh verse, one being by Ph'p Morgan b'r Sarnfawr' and one by his daughter Eleanor, miscellaneous English verse some dated 1768, and a few financial items. Four imperfect, printed leaves from a ? seventeenth century edition of metrical psalms with prayers for use in private houses have been bound in at the end of the volume.

Williams, The Court, Brecon, [18]63 (a request for a horoscope); medical prescriptions; a fragment of a Welsh carol; and a line-and-wash drawing of (or by?) John Lloyd Jones, Brecon College [afterwards minister successively of St. Davids and of Crwys and Pen-clawdd Congregational Churches] (endorsed 'Thos. Davies, Froodvale Academy, Carmarthenshire').

Also included are a transcript of the Welsh tale of the birth of Taliesin (ff. 1-4), a few medicinal recipes, and some seventeenth century financial memoranda. The greater part of the volume is written in a number of artificial or contrived copying hands, the scribe in some instances appearing to simulate a gothic script. The initial capitals of some of the poems have elaborate decorative detail sometimes incorporating the outlines of human figures or faces, the latter mostly grotesques. The volume has been attributed to a Glamorgan or Gwentian copyist of the first half of the seventeenth century (see TLLM, t. 44). If this dating is accepted stanzas such as those by Rhys Prichard probably have to be regarded as later insertions. There are marginal annotations in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg').

A manuscript in three hands containing a treatise on arms addressed to Morgan Elfael (fl. c. 1528-1541) from Hywel ap Syr Mathew (d. 1581); also poetry, etc. Pp. 1-165 are in the autograph of Hywel ap Syr Mathew and were written in 1557 (cf. the writing in Peniarth MS 138 and Cardiff MS 51); pp. 167-194 are in a second hand and written about 1598; pp. 195-204 are in a third hand and were written about 1600. The poets whose works are cited include Dafydd ab Edmwnt, Siôn Cent, Gruffudd Hiraethog and Iolo Goch. The volume also contains medical recipes (pp. 166-170) and a chronicle of the reign of British rulers (p. 198).

The manuscript is in the same hand as Llanstephan MSS 122-125 and may be that of John Pryce, rector of Mellteyrn (see p. 103).

Miscellanea by W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') - notes on Welsh books, literary figures, the 'chart of Queen Elizabeth for holding the Caerwys Eisteddfod, 1568', 'Achau teulu Pentref y Foelas', extracts from a Welsh pedigree book by Owen Gruffydd in the possession of Owen Jones ('Meudwy Mon') (Wynnstay MS 6), a note of reservation of a right to the Glan Geirionydd Bardic Union to hold Gorsedd Meetings at the Taliesin monument in Glan Geirionydd, 1895; and a transcript of a book of medical recipes.

There is a table of contents at the beginning in the hand of Richard Morris, 1784-1785, and another at the end by ?William Jones, who states that the manuscript was 'procured me by Mr. Holmes of the Tower'.
The dates appended to many of the subjects in the text show that the binder is responsible for the present derangement of the folios.

A manuscript volume with the title 'PEREDUR' in gold lettering on the spine. The manuscript, written in the year 1800 by William Owen [-Pughe], contains an English translation of the tale 'Peredur' which is sub-titled 'A Tale Of the Britons' with the Welsh text facing. The Welsh version is said on p. 234 to be transcribed from a manuscript in the hand of the poet Huw Llyn [i.e. B.M. Add. MS 14967, pp. 284-321], 'Adysgriviad o hen lyvyr wedi ei ysgrivenu gan Huw Llyn y Barz', but a note on page 60 suggests that the beginning of the tale was missing when the present manuscript was bound and that the transcriber added the missing part of the text on 21 Sept., 1827, 'Cyvysgrivwn odd y deçreu hyd yma, a oedd a'r goll pan rwymid y llyvr. D. Gwener, Medi 21. 1827. W. O. P. Segrwyd'. The following note appears on p. 235: 'Finished Dec. 31 1800, 9 o'clock at night - 3 hours before end of the 18th. century - Wm. Owen'. Written on the front fly-leaf is a medical recipe for 'Sore throat ulcerated' as well as the name 'W. Owen No. 40 Penton Street, Pentonville'. Pages 1-2 and 236-7 contain quotations from the works of medieval Welsh poets and the triads referring to Peredur with references to The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . ., Vol. 1 (1801), and Barddoniaeth Dafydd ab Gwilym (1789).

Culinary and medicinal recipes, collected apparently by Jane Tonyn of Berwick-on-Tweed, co. Northumberland, with some early nineteenth-century additions by Rice Hughes, son of Richard Hughes, rector of Dolgellau, co. Merioneth. Sources are frequently named, and dates sometimes given.
