Legal precedents.

The volume is described as Henry Wynn's 'Booke of Presidents', and contains precedents for conveyances, bonds, letters of attorney, petitions, appointments, etc. Some of the examples relate to Wales, and include copies of documents referring to Sir Richard Wynn of Gwydir, and the appointment of Henry Wynn to be Solicitor-General to Queen Henrietta Maria, 28 Jan. 1639/40. There are some additions in the same hand as MS 72.

Chancery jurisdiction.

A vindication of the judgement given by King James I in the case of the jurisdiction of the Court of Chancery, that the lord Chancellor should not desist to give relief in equity notwithstanding any proceedings at the common law.

Records of the Gwydir family.

An account of Meredith Wynn ap Evan ap Robert and his descendants signed by H[umphrey Humphreys, bishop of] Bangor, 1700, and taken out of the collection of Sir Thomas ap William; copies of inscriptions on tombs and memorials of members of the Gwydir family in Llanrwst, Dolwyddelan, and Penmorva, and a copy of the 'matches & coats of Armes that are on the walls within the Inner Chamber over the Gate house at the lower house of Gwyder taken in July 1690, by Mr Watkin Owen'.

Cywyddau by Dafydd ap Gwilym and others.

A collection made by John Price of Mellteyrn (cf. NLW MS 560B, Llanstephan MSS 122-5, Cwrt Mawr MS 25, and others in the same autograph in the National Library of Wales). There are about 100 poems of Dafydd ap Gwilim. The following poets are also represented: Dafydd ap Edmwnt, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Dafydd Owen, Gruffydd Hiraethog, Gruffydd ap Ifan ap Llywelyn Fychan, Howel ap Dafydd ap Ieuan, Huw Arwystle, Ieuan ap Rhydderch, Ieuan ap Llewelyn Vychan, Iolo Goch, Lewis Mon, Lewis Menai, LLywelyn ap Guttyn, Rhobin Ddu fab Sienkin ap Bledrydd, Richard Phylip, Rys ap Dafydd ap Llwyd ap Llewelyn Lygliw, Rhys Goch o Lyn Dyfrdwy, Sion Phylip, Sion Tudur, Sion Mowddwy, Syr Ifan Lloyd, Thomas Prys o Blasiolyn, Tudur Aled, and William Vaughan. There is a copy of Araith Iolo Goch at the end of the manuscript.

Legal precedents and miscellaneous notes.

A collection of precedents partly taken from North Wales cases, e.g. at Anglesey Sessions, 1618-1620; legal notes; notes on the Old Testament; tables of assessments upon the several commotes of Merioneth; a table of French kings, 420-1589; a copy of the charter of North Wales; pedigrees of the commote of Menai; notes on geography; pedigrees of the Rhiwgoch, Nannau and Corsygedol families written, apparently, by Ellis Lloyd of Rhiwgoch, who may have written the greater part of the volume. Ellis Lloyd was the father-in-law of Henry Evan whose name is written on the fly-leaf.

Particulars of the third part of Lloydiarth House allotted to Lady Palmer by the Court of Wards and Liverios, with a rental of the demesnes; rental of the third part of the lands and tenements in wardship during the minority of Herbert Vaughan, son and heir of Sir Robert Vaughan, deceased; particulars of Lady Palmor's third part of Egluseg House and a rental of the demesnes; particular of the first and second parts of Lloydiarth House and the demesnes thereof, allotted to the Right Hon. William Lord Powys, and a rental of the first and second parts of the lands and tenements in wardship as aforesaid.

Heraldry.

Fragments of a manuscript description of arms, with coloured shields of some of the Fifteen Tribes of North Wales and other founders of families.

Fragmenta Brit.

A miscellaneous collection of texts made for William Maurice of Llansilin, who has written some notes and marginalia with his own hand. Much of the contents of this manuscript has been copied from the manuscripts of John Jones of Gellilyvdy, e.g. Peniarth MSS 111, 264, and particularly 267, and the scribe has imitated the writing of his originals. This volume contains copies of:. Excerpts from classical authors.

Maxims and phrases collected out of the works of several Latin authors including Cicero, Ovid, Tacitus, Seneca, Terence, Juvenal, Quintilian, Pliny, etc. The excerpts have been numbered and there is an index to the chief words. There are also some English notes taken from Johnson's Geography.

Logic.

Notes on logic, with a few notes on dialectics, psychology and physics, all written in a seventeenth century hand.

Scriptural & theological dictionary.

The volume is divided into sections from A to Z and each section is indicated by a vellum tab marked with the letter which begins on that page, and is preceded by an alphabetical index to the subjects represented within it. The dictionary is far from being complete, and its appearance suggests the work of William Maurice of Llansilin, though his name does not occur in the manuscript.

Sermons & theological tracts.

A number of sermon notes; treatises on catechism, and on a method for the well handling of the Scriptures and dividing the word of God aright; a copy of an analysis, in Latin; of the Thirty-nine Articles, which was dedicated by John Piper to Gervase Babington, bishop of Worcester, 1597-1610; and lists of the seven Sacraments, the three Theological virtues, the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost, etc.

The mirror of Justices.

A copy of 'La Somme Appele La Miroir a Justices vel Speculum Justiciarcrum Factum per Andream Horne'. It is said to be transcribed from a copy belonging to Francis Tate and collated with an old manuscript in the College of St Benedict, Cambridge. A transcript of Tate's copy in the possession of one Jecell and collated with the Cambridge MS was printed in 1642. This copy is not in verbal agreement with the printed version, nor with the Cambridge Manuscript which was printed, with translation, for the Selden Society in 1895. The manuscript is in the same hand as MS 40 and part of MS 44.

Manual for Justices.

'Experientia. What Justices of the Peace may do'. Instructions on how to keep Quarter Sessions, with a copy of the charge to be given, precedents, memoranda and general information for justices, extracts from Plowden's Commentaries (i.e. Edmund Plowden 1518-1585), etc. The parchment cover contains particulars of the assessment of a tax of 4s. in the £ upon lands in Merionethshire (Tallallyn, Pennall, Llanglynine, Llanegerin).

A composite manuscript of mainly legal material:
(a) Directions for the practise of an attorney in the sessions in Wales;
(b) Notes on legal cases: Countess of Salop; Magdalen College; Spencer;
(c) An index of legal subjects; and
(d) Miscellaneous treatises and notes, comprising 'The forme of keeping of a law day or leete...', with a form of charge to be given; tables of legal fees; precedents; 'Lecture mgri. Treherne sur Carta forestar' (see also MS 39); notes of 27 lectures by Charles Calthropp upon copyhold tenure in 1574; notes of six lectures by Master Denishill upon the Statute of Fines (4 Hen. VII. cap. 24); a treatise on the law relating to islands arising in the sea; extracts of Placita de Quo Warranto at Chester, 1597, examined by Michael Heneage (joint-keeper of Tower Records), 1600; marriage articles of Frederick, the Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth, daughter of James I, 1612; notes on the Greek Church; a consideration upon the treaty of marriage between England and Spain, 1618; a treatise on the Apocrypha; notes on the prosperity of the United Provinces; Instructions agreed upon by a Council of War on board the Admirall 21 Oct. 1625, with a journal of the voyage written by Thomas Jeffreyes, chaplain to the Earl of Denbigh, rear-admiral to the Fleet, in HMS St Andrew, Oct.-Dec. 1625; the great charter made in 9 Henry III and confirmed by Edward I; forms of indictments, presentments and writs.
The headings and catchwords have been cut away in binding in a large number of folios.

Theological notes.

Notes on some of the attributes of God, alphabetically arranged, taken from the fourth book of Zanchius, presumably one of the eight tomes of the Operum Theologicorum of Hieronymus Zanchius, which were published in Heidelberg in 1613; and a few notes in English on Life, Prayer, Salvation, etc.

Physics & meteorology.

A book of notes and questions on Physics and Meteorology. The following names have been written on the outside leaves: John Hughes, John Lhoyd and Maurice Jones.

Argument upon impositions.

A copy of 'An argumt. uppon the question of Imposicons Digested and devided into sundry chapters by one of his Ma[jes]ties learned Counsell in Ireland', i.e. by Sir John Davies (1569-1626), with a dedication to the King [i.e. James I]. The manuscript is written in three hands, and is earlier than the date of the first printed version of the work (1656).
