Correspondence

The file comprises a letter from René Hague to David Jones, [May 1937] relating to the In Parenthesis proofs (possibly No. 11); a letter from Coutts bank to Harman Grisewood, 1976, relating to the manuscripts of David Jones which were deposited there, and a carbon copy of a letter from René Hague to Harman Grisewood, 1976, discussing the In Parenthesis manuscripts and proofs.

Hague, René

Preface

The file comprises a final manuscript text of the Preface to the Anathemata, numbered 1-46 with gaps by David Jones. There is also a list of illustrations, also numbered page 1 and a note by Harman Grisewood.

A6

The file comprises a manuscript draft dated 1949 by David Jones which includes notes for the typist on typesetting. This, combined with A7, is the nearest to the 'final' manuscript which is extant. It is written in black ink and many pages are numbered 5 A-F and 37 A-P, as well as 1-73 by David Jones. The text corresponds to the first four sections and the beginning of section V (pp. 49-61, 84-98, 110-134) of The Anathemata. See AZ for manuscripts that correspond to the missing pages 97-113, and AX and AX-Y for material corresponding to missing pages 61-82 to be inserted on folio 16.

A7

The file comprises a manuscript draft by David Jones written in black ink, which includes markings for the typist. This, combined with A6, is the nearest to the 'final' manuscript which is extant. The text corresponds to part of section V, and all of sections VI-VII except for the last page, (pp. 134-242) of The Anathemata. Many pages at the beginning are numbered 37P by David Jones.

AD

The file comprises a manuscript in pencil of material added to the proofs of the preface, explaining why the notes are printed with the text, and also an acknowledgement dated April 1952. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood (f. 6).

Black folder

The file comprises a black folder which David Jones used when he was writing The Anathemata. The folder now contains a miscellany of manuscript drafts, including pages numbered 46H, 62, 2 (dated 1941), 46B, 44, 96, 4, 21E, 16, 50, 10, 59A, 126C, 126F, 7A and 3D. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood (f. 1).

Fragments

The file comprises material found amongst the manuscripts of The Anathemata, but apparently not connected with that work. They include a few drawings, note to page 72, a draft letter referring to Eric Gill, a draft letter to 'Elri' [Valerie Wynne-Williams], correction to a page 178, and some pages possibly relating to Epoch and Artist.

Preface and notes

The file comprises one fragment of one sheet of the preface to The Anathemata; a typescript sheet of comments on The Anathemata possibly by Saunders Lewis, and miscellaneous notes on The Anathemata manuscripts and typescripts prepared by Harman Grisewood for his catalogue, 1975-1976.

Lewis, Saunders, 1893-1985

T5

The file comprises the original third carbon typing of the text and notes, without the preface, comprising pages 9, 25, 27, 28, 43, and 44 to end except for p. 49N. This was used as David Jones' main working copy for pp. 9a-[omega] and 97 to end. Apart from p. 60n the remainder is unmarked.

T6

The file comprises pages of the top copy of the original typing removed from T2 because of re-typing or replacement by a carbon. All pages of T6 have revisions by David Jones in pencil or ballpoint. Folios 7-8 are dated 9th of September 1951. Pages 18n-24, 25n-27n and 29n-41n served as copy for re-typing.

P2 Galley proofs

The file comprises the Faber & Faber reader's set of galley proofs with some queries in ink by two readers. There are also corrections and revisions in pencil, ink and red crayon by David Jones. His work on the galleys is dated February 1952 (pp. 13, 67). Galleys 17, 40-43 and 68 are wanting, and galleys 61-65 have all had sections cut out of them by David Jones for use in P7.

P3 Page proofs

The file comprises page proofs of the Preface and Parts I-IV, which were stapled together, and stamped for return to the printer. They have been corrected with minor revisions by David Jones in pencil and red ink, with suggestions regarding layout. There are instructions to the printer in the 'Faber' hand which has dated the proofs April 1952 on p. 9.

P8 Revised page proofs

The file comprises revised page proofs, which is a dummy of the complete book in a brown paper wrapper. 'Corrected proofs / G. W.' is written in ballpoint on the cover, and the corrections in blue ballpoint apparently are by G.W. There are corrections and revisions by David Jones in pencil, ink and red crayon. A few corrections and revisions are marked by a tick or cross in red crayon, of uncertain significance. P7 and P9 both contain some revisions marked by a yellow cross like P7, not all corresponding to those in P7.

P9 Revised page proofs

The file comprises revised page proofs, which is a printers copy of pages 7, 43, 79-84, 207-212, 217-8 and 237-243. These pages were apparently torn out of a dummy which was returned to the printer, as it brings together corrections and revision from both P7 and P8, and is the basis of the revise represented by P10 and otherwise of the 1st edition. There are corrections and revision by David Jones in pencil, ink and red crayon and eleven new lines of text are inserted on p. 243.

Draft introduction

The file comprises manuscript sheets written for the BBC Welsh Home Service as an Introduction to the production of The Anathemata. It appears to be a draft of LA4/2. There is also a note from Dr Stevenson, of Harley Street, 1952 (f. 1) and notes by Harman Grisewood.

Broadcast scripts,

Two typescript copies of BBC broadcast scripts of The Anathemata, adapted for broadcasting and produced by Douglas Cleverdon, 5 May 1953. Both scripts are identical except for occasional annotations and a few pages missing in one script.

Letter, 1944

The file comprises a letter, dated 2 February 1944, from a classical scholar signed 'Norman' who explains the meaning of the title and justifies David Jones's use of the word.
