Original bundle comprising a quitclaim of land called Gwern Ladron by John Lewys, son and heir of Lewys ap Moris of Aberystwyth, to Davit ap John alias David Saer, 1545, and a gift to William David ap John, otherwise William David Saer, with further quitclaim and bond, 1577.

Main estate title deeds

Title deeds of the estate of Main or Tre Main in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1545-1684. The files relate to miscellaneous arable lands, and to various houses and lands named Maes y Bont, Maes y Tir Newydd, Gro Meredith Lloyd, The Long Leasow, Y Ty yn y Tyr Calch, Y Wyg, Y Borva Newydd, and the capital messuage of Main, with Y Ty yn y Cwm and another unnamed messuage. The deeds show that estate was purchased by Richard Hunt, a Shrewsbury draper, between 1609 and 1617, and sold by his descendants to Owen Williams of Ystumcolwyn, Montgomeryshire, in 1676. Prior to these purchases, former owners of the properties included the descendants of John Goch, Ieuan ap Me’dd ap Ll’n ap Tuder, Edward ap David ap Ll’n ap Tuder, David Lloyd ap John ap Ieuan ap Owen, Howell ap William, Me’dd David ap Howell and his brothers, Owen Lloyd, Owen David Lloyd and William Benyon. The deeds also show the survival of the mediaeval field system of strips or parcels of land within larger fields at the start of the seventeenth century.

The earliest deed is a gift by Gruffith ap D'd ap Hugh ap Gruff' ap Tuder of Main to Roger ap Gruff' ap Guttun of arable land (unspecified), 1545. The file includes the pre-nuptial settlement of David ap John ap Ieuan ap Owen and Katherine vch Owen ap Mer'edd ap Lle'n ap Tuder, deceased, of lands in Main and Broniarth [Guilsfield], 1549; a quitclaim of dower by Catherine verch Mer'edd Lloid to Howell ap William of the lands of Thomas Rees, her late husband, 1585; a bond by William ap Ieuan ap Howell ap Madocke of Bodynfoel and others, to Reginald ap John Goch of Llandrinio referring to a lease made in 1551 by Ieuan ap Lli'n Goughe of Deuddwr, of property in the parish of Llanfechain, 1563; a grant by Owen Lloyd of a seat in Meifod church to his brother Humffrey, 1616; a quitclaim and several bonds to Richard Hunt of Shrewsbury, by Meredith ap David ap Howell of Main and his brothers, John, Owen, and Humfrey, by Humfrey Jones of Main, and Andrew Parry of Dyffryn Meifod, 1622-1635. The file also includes a quitclaim of of Plase Fose y Lloyne, Llangoedmor, to Rees ap John Thomas, 1545; the 1578 pre-nuptial settlement of James Lewes of Penbryn and Anne Lloyd [daughter of John Wogan of Wiston], 1578; the sale of Plas Dyffryn Llynan, Cardigan, to Owen Powell of Aberporth, 1581; a quitclaim of Kay Gwyn and Lletty Madog, Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, 1596/7; a demise of Cawres, Llangoedmor, by James Lewis the elder to Nicholas Lewis of Heane Castle, 1666; and a lease by Lewis Pryse of Abernantbychan, of Cefen Trefwtial and Tre’r Piben Cefen Ceirw, Penbryn, 1773.

Title deeds for houses and lands in Llannerch Goch in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1546-1558. The main property is Y Tythyn Ucha yn y Llannerch Goch; there are deeds for purchases by Yeuan Gyttyn Dyo, 1546, and by Ieuan ap Gr' ap David, 1551/2; bonds and quitclaims by Rhydderch ap Ieuan ap Guttyn Deio and Rytherche ap Ieuan ap Gruff' ap D'd respectively, to John Vaughan ap Rudderch, 1557-1558; a gift by Thomas ap John ap Rudderch to Thomas D'd Gutto, which also includes Y Borth Nant, 1573; and a mortgage by Rignallt William of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1622. The other properties are Tyddyn y Vron Goch, mentioned in a bond to John ap Riys of the commote of Genau'r-glyn, 1567; and Y Llyast Yn Yr Ddisgwylfa, assigned by George Jones of Rhos Gillan, mortgagee of Humphrey Harry, to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1671.

Epistolau bugeiliol St Paul.

An autograph translation into Welsh, [1567x1581], by Richard Davies, Bishop of St. Davids, of the Pastoral Epistles of St. Paul to Timothy, Titus and Philemon (ff. 2-11); this is apparently a new translation of these Epistles by Davies, following the publication of Salesbury's 1567 New Testament (see Glanmor Williams, Bywyd ac Amserau'r Esgob Richard Davies (Cardiff, 1953), pp. 108-109).
Also included is a bond, on parchment, dated 2 April [1565], signed by William Salesbury, incurred for the purpose of publishing the first Welsh editions of the Book of Common Prayer and New Testament (f. ii verso; Latin and English); a draft petition, [1546x1563], urging the translation of the New Testament into Welsh (ff. 1-1a; English); and a note by D. R. Thomas on the contents of the manuscript, 1891 (f. 13; English). For a transcript of the translation see D. R. H. cut through along the top of the deed.
