Halsingod,

A manuscript of about the second quarter of the eighteenth century containing sixty-three (numbered 1-62, 34 being used twice) 'halsingod', or songs on religious themes, by John Richard, Eliz. Griffith, David Davies, B.D., Siencin Sir John, David John, Da. John David(d), David Lewis, Richard John, Albon [sic] Thomas, Samuell Williams ('Vicer Llandyfriog'), Evan Griffith, George Thomas, Griffith Sion, Owen Evans, John Davies, John Evans, David Evan, and Samuel Evans, and anonymous compositions. Five of the compositions are printed insertions, namely Gwyrthiau ein Harglwydd Jesu Ghrist wedi ei troi ar Gân ... and Pedwar o Ganueu Ar amrvw Desdunion ... (Llundein, 1718). At the beginning of the volume is an index of first lines ('Table y Llyfyr hwn fel y canlyn').

A manuscript in several hands containing an incomplete text of an interlude, 'Hannes Oliffernes a Jiwdath' by Elis Roberts ('Elis y Cowper'), 1766 (see MSS 103, 123); free-metre poetry by Elisabeth Dauiuis [sic], Thomas Edwards ('or Nant'), Elis Roberts, John Richard, and Robert Richard (1768); and anonymous 'englynion' and free-metre compositions; and farming memoranda.

Mân Lyfrau Dewi Fardd ...

A composite volume comprising: (I) Four booklets in the hand of David Jones ('Dewi Fardd', 1708?-85), Trefriw containing an incomplete text of his '[Cronicl] Hanes [Cymru] a'i Thrig[olion] er amser Julius Caesa[r] hyd amser neu Deyrna[siad] y Brenhin Iago y Cyntaf'; a 'cywydd' by Tho. Prys; an incomplete list of titles (pp. 484-526) in David Jones : Blodeu-gerdd Cymry (Y Mwythig, 1759); and carols, etc., among them 'Newyddion Gyng'aneddau' by David Jones. (Ii) A booklet largely in the hand of Evan Thomas (ob. 1781), Cwmhwylfod, Sarnau, near Bala containing extracts from Y Drych Cristianogawl (Rhotomagi, 1585); and poetry in strict and free metres by Evan James, Sr. Rogier, Edward Sam[ue]l, Dafydd yn Ifan ('o Lanfair Careinion'), Edwart Moris, John Edward Ma..., Hugh Hughes and John William(s); and anonymous compositions, among them a 'Hymn yngulch duwdod Iesu Grist ...'. The spine is lettered 'Mân Lyfrau Dewi Fardd ac eraill'.

Hanes y Beibl,

A text of a translation of Eusebius Pagit: The Historie of the Bible, briefely collected by way of Question and Answer. The text is incomplete, pp. 1-8, 241-2 [and 255] being wanting. The translation was made in 1611, or is possibly a contemporary translation from an edition published during that year.

Letters and papers of 'Dic Aberdaron',

A volume containing holograph manuscripts and letters of Richard Robert Jones ('Dic Aberdaron', 1780-1843) comprising portions of an autobiography and notes and letters containing much autobiographical material. Most of the letters, 1837-43, are written from poor lodging houses in Liverpool (many addresses, such as Chisenhale Street, located mainly in the Vauxhall Road area). They describe his misfortunes and deplorable living conditions and also his dreams. There are several references to his Welsh, Greek and Hebrew dictionary and attempts to get it published. A few of the letters, 1840 and 1841, are written from Caernarvon (to Mr Evan Griffith, a sailor, Waterloo Street). There is one letter, 1841, containing drawings and abuse addressed to Richard Robert Jones, Rose Court, No. 1 Chisenall [sic] Street, Liverpool. The other manuscripts include a short work entitled 'The ancient order of harps described according to Greek rules taken from Claudius Ptolemaius ... compared with the old harps of Great Britain by Richard Robert Jones ... of Aberdaron ... 1820', containing a drawing of a harp with descriptive notes in Greek, the text which describes the arrangement of various harps is also in Greek. The manuscript bears a note in pencil 'Presented to me by the writer R. J. at Llwynybrain 1827 St Geo A[rmstrong] W[illiams]'. There is another copy of the text and a similar description of the harp in note form, also in Greek, and a single sheet with a similar drawing of the harp and parallel texts in Latin and Greek of Luke X, 5-11, and an extract from Rabbinic teaching in English and Hebrew. The single sheet bears the note 'Richard Jones (Dic Aberdaron) 1820 - Given to me by Dic himself in the year 1827 St Geo A[rmstrong] Wms'. The other manuscripts consist of short notes, transcripts and translations, mainly in Latin, Greek, English and Hebrew, relating to the Greek and French calendar, 'Zoroastres the Prince of the Magi', the herb Hyoscyamus and its medical attributes, partly extracted from the works of Galen and Pliny, and an extract from [ ] Guerre de l'Amerique, Livre 3, pp. 27-8, relating to the Tories (Loyalists) (French, with an English translation), etc. There is a list, which includes most of the manuscripts, compiled by J. Glyn Davies, 19 November 1892, on which is written the following note by J. H. Davies: 'This list was drawn up by J. Glyn Davies when the MSS belonged to Mr. T. G. Williams I bought them from Mr. Williams & have added a few myself'. There are also letters (3) from Professor T. Witton Davies, 1915, to J. H. Davies, which refer to the manuscripts of 'Dic Aberdaron' and to a volume (Cwrtmawr 50(ii)) of press-cuttings relating to him which had been lent to the writer by J. H. Davies.

Dic Aberdaron,

An album of mounted cuttings (from Y Gwladgarwr, Y Drych, Yr Herald Cymraeg, Baner ac Amserau Cymru, etc.) containing biographies and material relating to the life and work of Richard Robert Jones ('Dic Aberdaron'). The volume was compiled, with holograph annotations, by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The spine is lettered 'Dic Aberdaron'.

Sermons,

An imperfect volume of sermons, written in two hands. On the inside upper cover is the inscription 'E Libris How : Powell II : B'. This owner may be identified with Howell Powell (died 1736), rector of Llangattock-nigh-Usk, and the second half of the volume may be in his hand. The inside upper cover contains an incomplete list of contents.

Commentary on Jude, etc.

A volume of Robert Hulet, 1638, containing a commentary on part (vv. 1-8) of the Epistle of Jude, 'Quid est Logica', 'Aethica Compendium', etc.

Sermons,

A volume of Robert Hulet, 1653, containing sermons, together with some early eighteenth century additions.

Liber Miscellanorum,

A mutilated volume entitled 'Liber Miscellanorum' containing quotations, extracts, and transcripts of poetry and prose from printed sources, e.g. [Edward] Young: A Paraphrase on part of the Book of Job; 'Milt. Lib. III. Ver. I', being a translation into Latin verse by 'Mr. Dobson' of John Milton: Paradise Lost, ll. 1-55; verses 'Translated From the French By the Rev'd Moses Browne, Vicar of Olney'; 'Fas est et ab hoste doceri' and other extracts in the hand of Eliezer Williams (1754-1820), Vicar of Lampeter, etc.; 'Orsabrin and Meginella from Sir John Suckling's Goblins, Act. 3'; 'Epilogue to the New Tragedy of Semiramis by Sheridan'; a letter in the hand of St George Armstrong Williams (condolence, comments on the Tractarians and on a proposal for church unity); etc.

Transcripts and extracts relating to decretals,

A volume of transcripts and extracts from mediæval authors e.g. Durandus, Marsilius, Lombardus, etc. relating to decretals ('Ex textu et glossis decretalium secundum ordinem Titulorum'), together with miscellaneous later additions.

Transcripts relating to logic and dialectic, etc.

A volume of transcripts in three hands of texts relating to logic and dialectic and to cosmology and astronomy, e.g. 'Logicae et Dialecticae nomina indiscriminatim usurpantur, ne tamen differunt', 'De Coelo', 'De Motu Sphvrorum recto et transuerso', 'De Stellis', 'De Stellis fixis et Planetis', etc. Among later additions are a list of payments and purchases, 1746-8 (including the purchase of a 'sive at Lampeter') and verses (81 recto, 82 recto) entitled 'On Orinda & her Incomparable Pompey' and 'On Mrs. Philips her Pompey'.

The Daily Journal ...,

The Daily Journal: or, Gentleman's, Merchant's, and Tradesman's, Complete Annual Accompt - Book, ... 1801, with a few manuscript accounts. Inset is a letter from Rice Rees, Llandovery, to [ ] Williams (writer regrets being unable to help an old friend but it was impossible for him to reach Caernarvonshire to serve the following Sunday; writer intends going to Radnorshire the following week; college vacation and the consecration of the chapel). Some of the pages have been sewn at the top and the bottom and contain fishing flies.

Pregethau,

A composite volume of sermons, 1809-12 and undated, with introductory prayers, by the Reverend Eliezer Williams. Among them are a sermon, 1809, on the Jubilee [of the accession of George III], and a sermon preached at 'Llanbedr [Lampeter, Cardiganshire], 20 September 1812.

Emynau John Williams, Sain Tathan

An imperfect volume of hymns by and in the hand of John Williams (1728-1806) of St Athan, Glamorgan. The titles include 'Can Nalolig [sic] nei Haul Song ar Washinton's March'; 'Hymn ar y Tweed'; 'Arall ar yr adnodau blaena or 63 o Esia' ('Pwy welaf o Edon [sic] yn dod ...'); 'Arall ar yr adnodau cyn[t]af o 5 o Datg[u]ddiad'; 'Rhai myfyrdodau mewn twymin ar y nerfiau yr hon a barhodd o ddechre awst i ddiwedd medi 1789'; ['Cân Ddiddarfod'] with annotations ('diwedd llan Tathan Gorphen Haf 1791 J.W.') Two volumes of epigrams, epitaphs and other verses collected and transcribed from the papers of the Reverend Eliezer Williams by his son St George Armstrong Williams in 1836. They include translations from Horace and among the other titles are 'A Tribute of Gratitude from the Peasantry of Ayron's Vale to their Landlord for conscientiously lowering their rents', 'The Sceptic', 'Ancient & Modern authors', 'The Topers', 'Spendthrifts' 'Celia (imitated from Martial)', 'Laura', 'Stale jests against matrimony', 'The National Debt', 'On a Drunkard', 'Translator', 'On a little Fellow (from the Greek)', 'On a noted Liar', 'Occassioned by some illiberal reflections thrown on Dr Johnson's memory', 'The Miser', 'Gluttony', 'On Lieut. Price's defence of th Islands of Marçon', 'On a late proposition to Great Britain of an Armistice by sea', 'On the capture of the 'Guillaume Tell'', 'On Lieut. Burke's cutting out several armed Vessels from French and Spanish Harbours', 'On a sailor who refused to give his money to a Highwayman that stopped the Dover Stage Coach', 'On a sailor who took an Ass to the Play house at Sheerness', etc. MS 61, which is mutilated, also contains an 'Extract of a Letter from Lampeter, dated 21 Decr. 1816' describing a trial at the Town Hall, Lampeter, of 'several young gentlemen of the Seminary at that place' on the charge of maltreating and murdering 'several of the offspring of one Terence'.

A commonplace book of Evan Evans otherwise Evan ab Evans ('Ieuan Fardd' otherwise 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir', 1731-88), containing excerpts and extracts of prose and verse derived chiefly from English seventeenth and eighteenth century sources, e.g. Alexander Pope (translations of the 'Iliad' and the 'Odyssey'), Samuel Johnson (life of Richard Savage), John Dryden ('Preface to the Fables'), Abraham Cowley ('Miscellanies' and 'Davideis'), Sir John Suckling, William Warburton, William Wycherley, William Congreve, Joseph Addison, Samuel Butler ('Hudibras'), etc. The volume also contains 'englynion' and couplets by William Llyn, 'Theodore Alet', Sion Brwynog, Evan ab Jenkin Evan, D[afydd ap] G[wilym] Iolo Goch, Gwilim ab Ieuan hen, Dafydd ap Edmunt, Huw Cae Llwyd, Sion Tudur, and E. A volume containing Latin quatrains recording the succession of the Persian dynasty ('Monarchia Persica'), the Greek or Macedonian dynasty ('Monarchia Graeca seu Macedonica'), and Roman Consuls and Roman Emperors to the XV century; 'Texts about the effects of our Lords Death', signed 'Jo[h]n Evans'; a short treatise on 'Sacraments'; 'An Analitical Table about ye points of ye Baptismal Vow'; hymns; verses entitled 'Perrirhanterium'; miscellaneous quotations; etc.
